Terrain is Anthropologie's sister brand (they're owned by the same parent company), which sells everything for your garden and home: indoor plants, outdoor plants, terrariums, and so much more. Some Terrain shops (the smaller ones inside Anthropologie stores) are limited to dried flowers, indoor plants, and accessories and garden tools, but they have larger stores, including this location in Glen Mills - their flagship location. It opened in 2008; it has a nursery, a huge home store (decor, candles, llighting, food, gifts, garden gear, indoor plants), a fafe, a greenhouse... Whether you're a gardener or not, Terrain is fun to explore. We visited two weeks ago, and I have to say that it's particularly beautiful in winter - all those Christmas trees in snow and a fire pit and seasonal decor... Be sure to wear proper clothing for this indoor and outdoor shop. This is an Urban Outfitters family brand shop. Urban Outfitters was founded in Wayne, PA. Accordingly this first Terrain location was an all out endeavor. And it delivers. It's a hygge spa meets gardening paradise. Plan to spend 30-45 minutes shopping and walking the grounds. We sat outside and it eventually began to rain, we opened their umbrellas at first but they were able to accommodate us inside. Definitely need to make a reservation, they had mentioned sometimes they don't even take walk ins because it is so busy. It is a little pricey. Typical for $16-20 a dish. $4 and $5 drinks. We got a cheeseboard that was delicious and the server will explain each cheese. House made pickles were great. Everything there is farm to table, very veg forward. In each direction you look there are plants, candles, home decor, and interesting items to look at. This is a good place to find a unique or beautifully packaged gift for someone. Restaurant is connected to the store at the nursery with indoor seating in the old greenhouse and plants growing all around, it's especially nice to go when winter weather gets you down. There is also nice outdoor seating. It's a lovely setting for a smaller group for a special day like a birthday. The menu is very healthy although little kids may not love the options. They always have a variety of iced teas to choose from. It's also a nice setting for lunch for elderly parents, although it may be easier to bring them on a weekday when it's not crowded. Just a forewarning that this review is going to be very long and detailed, so if you're only going to read one thing from my review, read this: THERE WAS A LIVE, SQUIRMY, MOVING WORM IN OUR FOOD, with NO REPLACEMENT OF FOOD, AND ONLY CREDITED $2 OFF OUR ~$150 BILL. YES, TWO WHOLE DOLLARS. Now, rewind. When I first walked into this place, I was hit with a wonderful aroma of pine trees mixed with lattes; this place looked, felt, and smelled wonderful. We were seated in a green-house like setting, with an urban yet natural decor. We were greeted with an attentive server for our brunch, and I'm thinking that this will be a 5 star place...then the food came out, and it went all downhill from there. Food was not on par with the venue - our omelettes and breakfast sandwiches were just above any ol' breakfast food. Still, because of the setting, I was still loving the place. BUT THEN! Out of my friend's $25 breakfast steak, she picked up one of her mushrooms/salad, and on it was LIVE WORM, SQUIRMING AWAY FOR FEAR OF BEING EATEN. We immediately called the server over, and kindly notified the him that there "was a little friend" in our food. His only response? "Oh, I wonder how that survived the oven." He took the mushroom and friend away - and said and did nothing else. SO, I guess the expectation is just to proceed to eat the contaminated plate of food?! Well, lucky for Terrain, my friend didn't seem to mind as much that there was just a LIVE WORM in her plate, and she continued to just eat around the salad/mushrooms where it was found. When the check came, we noticed they did not credit us anything at all for the fact that there was a LIVE worm. We called the server back over, and he brought over someone else, who I would assume was the manager. ALL she stated was, "I don't know how the worm survived the oven in 400 degree temperature." OKAY, is that all you guys care about?! It doesn't matter HOW the worm got there (for all we know you guys could've put the worm in there yourselves), but the point is there WAS A LIVE WORM IN THERE. Maybe they would've actually cared a bit if the worm actually died in the oven? She then let us know she would be giving our coffee and truffle oil ($7 total) for free. Gee, thanks for the generosity when you ruined a $25 plate. But after we paid the bill, we realized we were tricked and she actually had only taken off the $2 truffle oil! TWO DOLLARS OFF FOR A LIVE WORM, EVERYONE. And still, because we had a party of 6, our server, who handed us a live worm and no apology, still walked away with 20% tip. When I was a little kid, this was an old nursery and my best friend lived in an old house next door. Boy have times changed. What an amazing place. I could spend HOURS here ( and thousands.. which I don't have) . But if you are looking for specialty plants this place will have them. Great place to find smaller items for terrariums. If Anthropolgie had a restaurant it would look like Terrain. Food was delicious. The appetizers and dessert were better than my entree. I tried to use 2 Terrain gifts cards to pay for a candle. Because 1 card did not have a pin number on the back, I could not use it. I was told to take pictures of the front and back of the card and send it to a particular web site. What a hassle!!!!!!!!! I will now tell people to think twice about buying Terrain gift cards. What should have been a pleasant shopping experience turned into a a fiasco. The woman next to me had the same experience. Wanted to have a wedding brunch here for 15 people in the mushroom house. The concept of having a private brunch that wasn't a wedding as I am Catholic so of course the actual wedding wouldn't be there, seemed to be too hard for them to grasp. All they would say is they only book weddings for 50 people. I really don't get what was so hard for them to understand about wanting to host a brunch for 15 in a room that only holds 15. My brief interaction with the event person was very aggravating though so I would recommend not booking a more detailed event here, if they couldn't grasp a 15 person brunch lol. I'm going with White Dog Cafe instead, they offer gorgeous private rooms and are easy to deal with. My request should not have been so hard for this place to understand. read more

For close to a week, we have been messaging and communicating with the event staff at Terrain in order to find ourselves a wedding venue to host our wedding ceremony & reception this coming winter. While communication throughout the past few days has been receptive and helpful, we were extremely disappointed when we were offered to 'pop-in' this past Saturday, only to find that in person interaction with potential clients is poor, unprofessional, and blatantly non-existent. It started on Friday, when we asked if we could drop by. We were informed that we could 'pop-in' on Saturday to take a look at their preparation and setup for a wedding event they had that weekend. We arrived around 09:55 on Saturday, and rather than just walk and wander into the building hosting the event, which was marked as a private event being held and warned visitors not to enter, we checked in with the cafe/restaurant, as advised by another staff member of Terrain. We did so, and were kindly greeted and informed they would notify the event staff we were there to take a look and to wait. We stood there for about ten minutes, then provided our phone number so we could walk around and to just hang tight for a few more short moments/minutes. We wandered around, poked at their relatively overpriced home decor (a lot of which is made in China, btw), and waited patiently. We also walked back up to where the private events were held and peeked inside the windows and main entry doors, but did not enter as the sign had warned. It was now about 10:40 or so, so we walked back to the cafe to check on what the status was. As we walked, two women were wandering the property and showing what appeared to be another couple with their mother or grandmother, giving a tour of the buildings and their campus, which lead us to believe they were already giving another scheduled tour. Once we checked in with the restaurant, they couldn't provide an update and said they had been unable to get a hold of the event staff, contradicting the previous directive to just hang tight for a few minutes. We then just told the staff we would walk into the event area that was set for decor, to which they said no problem to doing so. We went back up, entered the banquet area, and then discussed between ourselves where we could do what, how we would possibly setup the flow of the evening, and were visibly interested in what could be done. The same two ladies that previously gave the tour were present, one sitting at her laptop across the room laptop who noticed us, but chose not to acknowledge us, and another that walked right past us four times and only offered a "Hello" and no further conversation. We shrugged this off, and it was now 10:55, so we said screw it and left. Right as we got in the car and headed to Home Depot, an email message arrived from Kelsey, acknowledging that she knew we were here, but nobody was available and to just 'browse around' and take a look. While an event was to take place, a simple professional greeting goes a long way, along with correcting the false communication that we were essentially waiting for someone that was never going to bother to introduce themselves or even make an effort from the beginning. With two potential clients standing in the room, visibly interested and discussing the possibilities of the venue, this small effort could have gone a long way to entice us to schedule more than a vague 'pop-in'. Additionally, after having promptly responded to Kelsey's email once received, even directly asking if someone else had just received a tour, it would have been nice to have received a response. Needless to say, Terrain will not be receiving any money from us, nor will they be receiving any referrals, instead the contrary, in the future. read more

We hosted my friend's bridal shower for 13 people in the Mushroom Hut today and it was perfection! If you can imagine, this Anthropologie-owned venue/cafe/nursery looks STRAIGHT out of Pinterest in the most puke-worthy way. Succulents on the wall, round bulb lights, tree stump seats, the works. It's adorable for a small group, and you can BYO champagne for mimosas. The wait staff waited on us hand and foot, bringing round after round of the most incredible food--fresh baked rolls with herbed butter, salad, apple fritters, brioche French toast, vegetable goat cheese frittatas, potato hash, the works. The pace was consistent and they didn't interfere with the flow of our shower with gifts, etc. We also brought our own cake which they cut for us! They packed up our leftover food for the bride as well. Be prepared to pay for the service--it's not necessarily cheap to rent it but we split among the bridesmaids so it wasn't terrible. read more

Terrain is my new happy place. It makes me as feel relaxed and warm and cozy as the artful pages of Martha Stewart Living Magazine do. It makes me want to take up my shovel and spade and find a nice open plot of land in Chester County. It was a lovely choice for an afternoon lunch with a friend on my birthday. The restaurant was busy but the wait was a reasonable 15 minutes. The host also seated me before my friend arrived which is often not the norm at many restaurants these days. I ordered the vanilla honey tea latte which was a warm and soothing concoction of black tea, vanilla, foamed milk, and a delicate swirl of honey in a deep mug. I love that they serve their cold beverages in Ball canning jars and that the silverware is slightly mismatched. The greenhouse setting is delightful with it's decadent array of greenery, water aspects, and the sunlight that streams in even on a cold winter day. They serve warm bread in a terracotta pot that is reminiscent of a popover. Their butter is house-made, blended with sage, and sprinkled with coarse sea salt. You will be instantly addicted! The curried quinoa cakes were a departure from my usual appetizer of salad and well worth it. They were silver-dollar sized cakes, browned to a light crisp and served with a mildly spicy dipping sauce and a bed of pickled veggies. The flavors were delicious - the rich, hearty quinoa blends nicely with the vinegar bite of pickled carrot. I highly recommend the pulled pork sliders. You are served 4 3-bite sandwiches on toasty brioche buns heaped with juicy, tangy, bbq pork. Fingerling potatoes, sliced lengthwise and browned in the oven and coleslaw complete the meal. Their house-made ketchup is delicious. I shared a dessert of cherry pie with ice cream with my friend. A perfect ending! I thought the portions were perfect and the menu reasonably priced. Several of the menu options would allow for sharing if you wanted to order several dishes and swap with your dining guests. Of course, the shop is a draw for many who visit Terrain. Despite it being January, they still had quite an array of unique plants for sale . They certainly aren't short on all sorts of intriguing little baubles (soaps, candles, gardening supplies, planters, cookbooks, kitchen accessories) for one's home. It's hard to be frugal at Terrain but they do stock some unique items such as those for terrariums. I particularly like the glassware they carry as the seals don't rust! (I didn't happen to see any $30 mason jars as Karl S. suggest, but they could be out there. I snagged mine for $4.50. I suppose you could find glassware cheaper via thriftshops or yard sales, but as someone who avidly cans, I spend the bulk of my money on the jars.) My experience at Styer's was subpar. Maybe it was overhyped, but probably not. I would've been disappointed regardless. So here's the deal. The boyfriend and I go to terrain around 1pm on a Saturday for brunch. We're pretty hungry so we order the apple fritters as an appetizer, the french toast, and the salad with the chicken add on. So first our bread arrives in cute little gimmicky pots. Let me just say, both the bread and the presentation were the best part of the entire meal. There was some sort of salted honey butter than melted on the freshly baked bread that made it so so so incredible. I wish I could order just this bread. All right, so then the chicken salad. We thought maybe the chicken add-on would be $4 or $5. It was $8. But here's the thing. It was literally just salad (a chunk of lettuce, some poorly sliced avocado, and some chickpeas) plus a huge chunk of a chicken, bone and everything, uncut. Definitely not expecting this from an $18 salad. We didn't even get proper silverware to deal with the chicken so we ended up needing to pull apart the chicken and lettuce chunks WITH OUR HANDS. What is this, an Ethiopian restaurant? If I wanted to be more manual with my food, I would've driven down to DC to Zenebech Injera or Ethiopic. The french toast was decent. Huge portions, not incredible but definitely not the best french toast I've ever had. Some nice berries came with it. and the syrup was pretty good. We were so full after the french toast we couldn't even eat our apple fritters but we felt bad spending over $50 on a meal as college students so we forced them down before we went to catch our movie. So that was our meal. One more thing to note: for some reason you only get cold water if you pay for another drink. So since we picked water as our only beverage, we received water ranging from room temperature to lukewarm as our drink as for our refills, while we saw our neighbors receiving nice, cold refills. Not ideal on a summer day. It's not like we had a cheap meal either! Well, lesson learned. Probably won't come back unless my mom pays for it. And I'll steer her away from the chicken salad unless she wants to bring her special knives. 2.5 stars for the experience and the décor. and the bread! read more

I am completely in love with this place! The only reason why I knocked off a star is because of their slightly high prices and also the fact that they don't have enough menus for all their customers! We waited for 10 minutes just to share a menu.. FOOD: -peaches & cream brioche: this brioche was SO SOFT; the addition of the fresh peaches just made it perfect as opposed to the canned peaches I received for the same dish at Wedge + Fig :( -roasted vegetable sandwich: two thumbs up for the juicy portobello mushrooms in the sandwich and the rich basil aioli; also, the house cut fries were somehow the most delicious potatoes I've eaten in my life -FREE BREAD: uh-MAZE-ing. free is always amazing. but THIS bread somehow surpassed that, by 1) being cooked in an actual pot, 2) so amazingly fresh and soft, and 3) paired with the most sublime pink peppercorn maple butter Ambiance & service was also spot on. Our waitress was constantly smiley and helpful when needed, but wasn't hovering. We sat in the beautiful greenhouse (which apparently you cannot request), but was pretty empty when we arrive at around 10:30 on a Saturday morning. Who ever heard of an awesome meal happening at a gardening center!? To be fair, it's not your typical garden center but still. I was expecting something along the lines of IKEA dining. Everything was tasty although there were some real standouts: Raw kale and Swiss chard salad: fresh, crunchy, with thin slices of radish and toasted pine nuts. This had a lovely sweet, bright flavour which paired well with the shaved Parmesan cheese. By far my favorite dish Pork belly banh mi: awesome pork flavor and crunchy texture. Could have used a bit more typical banh mi ingredients like pickled carrots to offset the richness of the pork but still, a lovely sandwich. We also shared the scallops which were flavorful and perfectly cooked. I found the pickled cauliflower a bit harsh although my friend really loved it. Raw turnip was an interesting, albeit slightly odd ingredient. We also tried the smoked trout brandade. This was my least favorite. There was nothing wrong with it but it didn't have the wow factor of the other dishes. Still good though! My only slight criticism is how COLD it was sitting in the greenhouse like setting. Hey! Look! Pinterest opened a store! Everything in this place looks like it has been magically transported from Pinterest, Southern Living Magazine or Real Simple. It's a lovely place to walk around and browse. There's an outdoor garden shop area, an indoor garden shop area that transitions smoothly to decor to gifts to housewares to personal care items like botanical creams and lotions to a restaurant and lastly to a spa. It's all beautifully and harmoniously merchandised. They have events, such as "Meditation and mindfulness" and "Cryophotography workshop" that you can sign up for. The staff are friendly and look exactly like they should be there and in this lifestyle. There is a price you pay for this, and that is literal mark-up. You will not find bargains in Terrain. A hand-painted plate from South America not suitable for food was $98 for example. Lovely display piece. FDC was looking for plants to use in a terrarium that she wanted to start, and they had everything including a free 'how to' guide, which is of course what they would have. We did not dine, so no comments on the food. I enjoyed visiting, though, and would happily return to browse. Next time perhaps we'll grab a bite to eat. read more
