I go here because of their country fried steak. it's really good. But one of the two problems I had was one time I was there, I ordered my food and waited. then all of a sudden I felt an "ich" on my leg. I Looked and saw it was a roach. I squashed it with my hands and waited for my meal. it wasn't a problem to me so doesn't bother me. And this was last year (2025) in October. Today, February 6, 2026 (Also My birthday), I ordered a country fried steak and a lumber jack pile omelette. I was to my final bites and I heard a crunch. I Looked throughly in my bite and found a shard of glass. I gave it to the lady up front, told her what happened, she said sorry. And she went to go in the back, but I don't like to push my issues on people so I just left. I gave them many chances. I'm lowkey done With them now. The food may be good but that glass shard would've cut me up inside. Hopefully I didn't swallow any shards too. That's the last straw. This was reinforced this past Saturday while I was drowning in emails and writing an SOP for work when my good friend called me and asked a favor. He said, 'Charlie, I need to find a good breakfast place in Burien', to which, I replied, 'I know just the place'. I sent him a link to Shelly's and one more location just in case and later that day, he sent me the following: Shelly's is in the middle of nowhere Burien, but that's okay because it's a hidden gem. The service by Aleisha was exceptional. Sidenote: A couple of things to know about my friend. He's been a foodie for more than 70 years and always orders off the menu with precision. Hash browns need to be well done, and there has to be an additional side of strawberry jam among other requests. He goes on to tell me, 'My meal was prepared perfectly. Just the way I like it.' While I didn't eat breakfast with him that day, the exuberance of his visit was like a never-ending pouring of syrup on a stack of hotcakes. He continued to rave about the service from Aleisha and his meal throughout the day. He later messaged me as he often does with, 'I would give it a 10'. Well, there are no 10s in Yelp, but there are 5s. While Shelly's may have that diner look and feel inside and out, it was just the right breakfast for my good friend this past Saturday. read more

I wanted a big meal because I didn't want to buy airport food and that is definitely what I got - large portions! I wasn't a huge fan of the sandwich, I don't think the cheese was a good combo. I actually really wish I hadn't gotten cheese at all lol, but without the cheese I just knowwww it would've been good. I loved the jam it came with. A hometown diner, a small business -- glad to see an outfit like this in operation, and want to support them by giving them business. I went for breakfast on a Saturday morning - I started with Earl Grey tea (good, a full pot of tea using a Stash tea-bag, for only $2). My breakfast was a Hangtown Fry, and I'd driven down from Seattle, jut to try it. It came with a choice of toast (I went for the generous biscuit), and home fries (new potatoes, cut in pieces and cooked with salt, garlic and some other flavor-enhancing ingredients. The food came out promptly - the biscuit was far too big to finish, but it was fresh and good. It came with two tiny containers (one jam, one butter), neither of which were sufficient in quantity to properly cover the biscuit, so I sliced it in half, and used them on half. I'm sure I could have asked for more, but I didn't. Hangtown fry is one of my favorite breakfast dishes of all time -- I used to get it at Chinooks in Seattle's Fisherman's terminal, long after it was no longer on the menu -- but since the pandemic, they're not doing breakfast anymore (with a few rare exceptions). In any case, they set a high standard for the dish. Shelly's hangtown fry was more of a scramble than a traditional hang town fry, but it had all the right ingredients - scrambled eggs, spinach, oysters, onion, bacon. The eggs, bacon, and onions were all good. The oysters were OK, but would have benefited from separate pan frying in very light batter before being integrated into the dish. So, not as good as Chinook's used to make, but fairly decent. The home-fried new potatoes were oddly seasoned -- while they looked great (the way I usually like them), I wasn't a fan of the seasoning (I love garlic, salt and pepper, but there was something else there that threw the flavor off a bit). The restaurant itself was in a strip mall, and had booths and tables right out of the 1950s. The staff was friendly and helpful, though much like a traditional diner, there was nothing fancy about the decor or the service (the woman who waited on my table delivered food while talking to someone on the phone, then made a comment to the cook about a joke the caller had told her. So all-in-all, Shelly's was a good little joint, but I'm not sure I'll be making the trip back anytime soon. In other words, a good breakfast place for locals, not a place I would make a special trip for again. One minor annoyance - a charge for "non cash adjustment", or in other words, a credit card fee. I understand that card processors charge for their service, but at this point, I don't carry/spend cash anymore, and don't appreciate such fees. Better to adjust the prices, than nickel and dime customers with fees. read more

The good parts: it was busy when we arrived on a late Saturday morning, usually a good sign. I ordered an Irish Coffee. They may have been short staffed - it took a good while. My Irish Coffee did pack a good punch - always good for this one-drink-buzz girl. Portions were also quite large. My omelette was quite big, stuffed with spinach and bacon. A good portion of potatoes were served with your meal. Not-so-good parts: service took awhile - they may have been short staffed. The Bloody Mary wasn't flavorful, just tomato-y. The food was okay for us, not great. Hubs ordered Chicken Fried Steak, but it wasn't his favorite. Ambiance was diner-ish. No music. Kinda felt packed in. Having been a regular customer for the last 3 years I had the WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER THIS MORNING! I ordered the Kitchen Sink Omelet only to be surprised with BROKEN PIECES OF GLASS IN MY OMELOT. When i called the server to inform her of the situation her reaction was one of total indifference and the entire staff was not interested at all. The server informed me that it was likely from the microwave over they had been having trouble with this morning. These people along with Shelly know us on sight as we have been regular customers every Friday morning for the last THREE YEARS!!! TO DISPLAY TOTAL INDIFFERENCE WAS QUITE SURPRSING. Unfortunately we did not like our breakfast. Customer was ok, she was very nice but would spill coffee in our water every time she poured it. Grits were perfect! My husband ended up getting sick after eating the Benedict and he has a pretty strong stomach. We had to head home right after because he got sick from his food. My scramble wasn't good. My French toast was like the worse pieces of bread you could use. If you aren't picky you would probably won't mind the food maybe. This place was a nice hidden gem over in Normandy Park. The decor could use some work, but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit as a whole. It wasn't busy when we went and the service was top notch. We ordered coffee and hot cocoa (which came with sprinkles) and the classic Benedict and Biscuits and Gravy came out quickly and were delicious. I've been wanting to try this place for a very long time, and I was extremely disappointed. I will start by saying that my son French toast was delicious, and the coffee was also pretty good. However, the egg tasted reheated and definitely not fresh, and the waffle with whipped cream and strawberries that I had definitely the same. The waffle was very dense, and their strawberries were literally frozen strawberries, and between the textures of frozen and dense it was really bad. When the lady took it to the back, I was sitting at the table next to the kitchen and the cook was talking about how he was so insulted. Excuse me sir first of all, Are you serious right now? Really the plate that you served was absolutely unacceptable at a restaurant, I understand that he was very young. But the whole experience was extremely disappointing. And still tried to charge me $40 for eating one French toast, a coffee and an apple juice.... It's gonna be a NO for me. read more

First time in trying to check out local Mom & Pop gems. Dept. of Health rated Shelly's GOOD currently posted at the entrance. Not a deal breaker, does raise my hesitation flag for trying. Place was dead Thursday morning at 1130am. Service was warm and quick. Ordered the egg salad sandwich with potato salad & Hong Kong chicken salad supposed to be with mandarin oranges . Egg salad advertised on white bread, served dry wheat bread almost cardboard like. Sandwich was SUPER heavy on mayo, egg salad pretty bland and did not eat. Potato salad with red potatoes is my favorite. Shelly's potato salad is VERY rustic with huge chunks of potatoes and eggs not diced up, kinda felt like the chef didn't really care to cut up & stir ingredients. The smaller cut up parts were tasty! Hong Kong salad is HUGE portion, did not get mandarins but did have cut up oranges, chicken bits really dry. Overall disappointed with experience and would not recommend or order these items again. This diner felt like I traveled back in time. It really looked like you were back in the 70s but everything was still very kept up and cared for. A lot of the people there were on the older side and I even heard another customer reminiscing about when they would come here when they were younger. The waitress that we had was super nice and eager for us to feel like we're at home. The waitress that took over wasn't so helpful and welcoming so it kind of dampered the experience. The food felt very homemade, like my grandma used to make. Also, their orange juice was freshly squeezed and super good! Highly recommend getting it with your breakfast. read more

A hidden gem indeed. Now I'm not from the area or even from Washington, but I do know a great local restaurant when I see one. Shelly's was a delightful find after arriving in Washington after an early flight. The interior is drastically outdated and quite frankly falling apart, but you find that with a lot of mom-and-pop diners. Our waitress, I'm assuming one of the owners, prided herself in saying that they are especially known for never running out of anything. I love to hear it! My sister's least favorite meal of the day is breakfast, but luckily, she was able to order from the lunch menu. Chicken and waffles. A favorite at Shelly's and rightly so. Banana Foster French Toast. MY WORD. It was my first time trying anything banana foster related and holy moly, how have I gone all this time without it? I was melting with every bite; it was that good. What has happened to Shelli's used to go here on the regular went today and it was awful. The floors are sticky when you walk-in, the food was cold. Service was ehhh. I don't mind paying but 45.00 for two half eaten meals?! Yikes won't be back and definitely don't recommend. Felt more like a money grab since we discussed our disliking of meal with the server. The running joke: To make their hash browns extra crispy there is a lady in the back who is paid $1 all day long, as well as a biscuit, to sit on 'em. Their jam is fantastic. I love that they purchase it from a local jam and preserves maker. I loved hearing that the flavors rotate depending on what is in season. I can't wait to come back and try something else. The inside of this place definitely tells you that this is a no frills, for the locals kind of spot. They are not trying to impress anyone. They have a bar in the back. People apparently drink at all hours of the day and night here. The food we ordered was delish. I had the corned beef and hash. It was phenomenal. I loved that the hash wasn't made of meat that looked canned. You got full flaky meat and lots of it. There was definitely more meat than there were potatoes. (See photo). It was salty enough but not too salty. The meat was tender and had some crispy edges. Nothing was burnt or overly flavored with anything. The hash browns were extra crispy like I'd requested. The lady in the back sitting on 'em did a great job. LOL (See disclaimer/running joke) Their breakfast menu was quite extensive and had all different kinds of offerings, from cakes to omelette and Benedicts and things. Their portions are very large and although you'll say that you won't be able to finish your plate, you will definitely try and might even unbutton your pants if you have to, like a gentleman across from our table who thoroughly enjoyed his meal. This place is in a strip mall type spot. There is ample parking here and if I were you, I'd park as close to the front door as possible. With the bi-polar weather that they get in Seattle, you may come into the restaurant with there being blue skies and leave when the sky is dark and the rain is falling sideways directly at you. That's almost what happened to us. We waited out the rain, another 10 minutes or so. It was so strange. Ten minutes made all the difference. We took some left overs home but they didn't make it real far. My lil one liked her happy faced kids breakfast and chocolate milk. The server was very sweet and friendly but he was super forgetful. I think he was being a tad overly chatty with people and so he'd often forget what it was that he was supposed to bring to our table. He had to make 5 trips to bring us 3 items: boxes, a bag and a small container with a lid for a homemade tomato reduction that came with my hubby's meal. Sheesh. Hallelujah for the south ends most appetizing greasy spoon breakfast spot. A friend of mine had tipped me off about Shelly's during a Kraken game so I made the journey for a Sunday morning breakfast... She was packed with what looked like Sunday regulars. Seating host located me a table and handed me the menu and with a smile. After digesting the menu I came to the conclusion I need corn beef hash, hell yes sir that is what I ended ordering with a side of crispy bacon and OJ. Ya can't start the day without your OJ darn it. As requested bacon was crisp and the mountain of corn beef hash and potatoes was enormous. The kinda mountain that requires a flag at the top indicating you concurred it... Way to much but huge value for those sharing or having a Paul Bunyan appetite.. Can't rave enough about an old geezy spoon but Frank will be back! read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. The manager/waitress is so UNBELIEVABLY RUDE!!!!! Absolutely no customer service skills WHAT SO EVER. I would never recommend this place and would never EVER give them my money. Amazed they are even in business with how snarky and distasteful the owner behaves to her patrons. My mother and grandmother were eating here for my 90 year old grandmothers birthday, and I called the restaurant to see if I could surprise them by doing something nice and paying for their food. The manager answered the phone and as I started to explain this request when she bluntly cut me off and said that she is busy right now.... slightly rude, but I've worked customer service so I can understand. I continued trying to explain my request, more short winded this time, when she asked if I could hold while she dealt with a wrong order because they are so swamped right now. Sure, no problem. Then she got back on the phone and for a third time, rudely told me that she was very busy right now, insinuating that she does not have time to even listen to my one question, and then asked rudely " what do you want". She never even let me finish asking if I could pay over the phone for one of their tables. With this being the 3rd time that she rudely said she was too busy, so I told her if she is so busy just don't answer the effing phone next time. And she hung up on me. I am a very shy non confrontational person, so for me to say that, you know the behavior was really really bad. As someone who has worked both as a manager and in customer service for many years, her rude and snarky behavior was inappropriate and unauthorized. I'm sure I am not the first person nor will I be the last customer to swear at her, because someone with so little tact should not be working with the public. To the manager: I hope you read this and reflect on your behavior, and realize how your behavior is directly impacting your business. For future reference, the proper way that should have been handled, especially by a MANAGER, is to A) either put the person on hold until you have two free minutes to take a phone call, B) Ask the person to call back in ten minutes when the rush has calmed down, or C) not answer the damn phone in the first place. read more

A menu twice the size of the restaurant, aside from the breakfast staples, this place has all kinds of interesting dishes, including a scramble with fresh oysters! Plates are ample! We could have shared the breakfast burrito. The Joe's scramble was tasty. The hash browns were a bit too greasy. Dining room is small and simple, with decent parking. The folks who seat you rock the house! They had to fetch the server twice. She arrived on auto pilot, kind of vaguely staring off into space and repeating pleasantries like the old robotic guy on the Carousel of Progress (No privacy at all around here!) when she came back to ask if we needed anything with the dropped plates I tried to tell her, but the carousel was turning towards the next robot, so she was busy humming "It's a great big beautiful tomorrow" in her head, and didn't hear me, walking away. When I asked her a bit more loudly, she got very huffy with me. Took the whole experience down a couple of stars. Good food. Perhaps trade Waffle House this tired server for a couple of future draft picks and an animatronics maintenance guy, who can get her smile, and good attitude, working might help. read more

I so wish I could give a better review for this very cute family owned business. However, the food was not great and the inside wasn't well kept. The booths looked dingy and needed to be deep cleaned. It was just dirty inside. The coffee cup I got had old lipstick on the side. They didn't keep their sugar and sweeteners on the table and the coffee creamer tasted expired. As far as the food, they give you an absolutely HUGE portion of food, which no normal person could finish, which just added to Americas food waste. Not only that but I had the biscuits and gravy. The gravy was sweet, it wasn't savory as expected. It also did not have sausage chunks in it. The biscuits were dry and flaky, not buttery and soft. The eggs were okay, they had the nice crispy glaze on them. The home potatoes were HORRIBLE. They put a sweet tasting seasoning on them, they were not nice and salty/savory. It almost tasted like rosemary, not good. The bacon was cooked well. The eggs and bacon were good. My grandma had the Greek omelet and ate most of it but so much of our plates went to waste. This is for my visit earlier this year, with a pregnancy craving for a traditional omelette and hash browns. I'll cut right to it: - I was sat at a broken (leaning) table that was not wiped down. I had to ask the guy to wipe it down after he put my water down. - After he set down my water, he sat down in the booth next to mine and just looked at his phone. Didn't send a waitress or offer any coffee or... anything. Eventually a waitress came around to a different table. - the floor was filthy. - the diner smelled just... dirty. - the booth was split/torn, dipping, and so sticky. - the Denver omelette was... well, sour. I couldn't eat it all. It was all a greasy soupy mess. - I was charged $3 for a side of toast, which was half of a single slice of dry bread tossed on top of my food. 3 bucks! Someone recently asked locally for breakfast recs and this place was mentioned often... for having roaches. Lots of reviews here also mention roaches, and the owner blaming the Mexican restaurant next door. I checked the reviews over there and none mention roaches that I can see. read more

The service was good. Bacon and eggs were ok. Pancakes were dense and tough. The coffee was the worst I have ever had. I'm really not that picky but this coffee tasted like it was made the day before, sat on the burner overnight, then watered down. Definitely not a $20 breakfast. read more

I'm on the fence about Shelly's .i have been twice now, first time I have the tuna melt, it was so bad It was super fishy , not in a good way, I had my friend try it as well as maybe my taste buds were off, but she spit it out into her napkin!wondering if it was old or maybe they put fish sauce in it, I don't know. Tried breakfast this time, it was good, not fabulous like I have heard and where as they are very nice there, service was slow and there were really only four tables that were eating...... I am always on the hunt for "the diner." These places hold a special place in my heart and stomach. They have to possess a particular vibe and a classic (enough) menu. Shelly's was on the list to try. Upon entering the restaurant in a small shopping center, I am glad to see they have plenty of booth style seating (a diner must have), one of which we are promptly seated at. The place has a good crowd for a weekday afternoon and two people manning the floor and register, one apparently being Shelly. Service was fast and efficient, with a check discreetly dropped at the table towards the end of the meal. The food at Shelly's is hearty, dependable breakfast/lunch diner food. We have a Turkey Dip (a French Dip with turkey instead of roast beef), Steak and Eggs and a biscuit. Coffee was surprisingly decent for a diner and the ice tea was huge. Real roasted turkey was on the sandwich and fries were perfectly crispy. I didn't try the steak, but it got two thumbs up across the table. The biscuit was more pastry-like than I expected and was quite crumbly. I kind of liked it, probably wouldn't go out of my way to have one in the future. Shelly's is definitely in diner rotation for me now, and I am looking forward to trying more of the classics. read more
