Shelly's...man o' man, where do I start?
After reading some of these reviews, I'm sure the experience may have been different if they were minorities, correction, specifically African-Americans. I don't normally throw the race card out there and until I started talking to other African-American men about my experiences there, I had actually discounted and just thought they had terrible service.
When I first arrived in the area, I was happy to see a "cigar bar" close to my place of employment. Before, I had a chance to venture there alone, I ended up there as part of a large group which included several lobbyists, a ranking Senator and a Chief of Police of a large city...none of whom were minorities except for myself. That night we spent several hundred dollars on drinks and cigars and had a good time.
The following day, I decided to go there alone after work and boy, did the mood change. There are two TV in the bar area, one of which was tuned to CNN and the other was tuned to a pre-season Washington Nationals baseball game. As I set in the bar and ordered a Bookers Manhattan and an order of Spiced Shrimp, I asked my server if he could change the TV showing CNN to the NBA basketball game as this was the playoffs. As there was NO ONE else in the bar area, he said no problem and changed the channel. About 10 minutes later, the channel changes and nows in on Fox News. My first thought was that someone must have accidently hit the remote button but no, shortly thereafter, the server came back and apolgized by saying the bartender (White Male, Slick Back Hair, Serial Cigarette Smoker) had told him to change it and to let me know that "he didn't want this place to turn into a sports bar." What?! And yet, that same bartender was the only one watching the baseball game on the other TV....so I guess baseball isn't a sport and yes, that is another subject;-)
So in and of itself, this isn't a big deal. But then I proceed to tell this story to other African-American men and they have had the exact same thing happen to them. It's like "sports bar" and "basketball" and code names for Blacks.
Before I began to hear this from others, I had actually had a friend call to see what the requirements were to obtain a box or humidor there. They told him that there was a waiting list and before I could even be added to the list, I needed to come in and make myself known to the "staff" and if they liked me I "might" be put on the list. Wow....really?? Am I pledging again??
I could go on and on with other stories and experiences but my fingers are tired from typing, but when I think of Shelly's it pisses me off so I may be back on here soon.....until then.
