Off Hwy 95/ Route 66 in Needles. This Shell station had: Friendly staff. Clean restroom inside. (They have some restrooms outside, too--we didn't use them). Extremely expensive gas prices--Almost double from other locations! Today was $6.69/gallon Unleaded. On left side of building- sign shows advertised as complete automotive services/Tire shop.

I've only stopped in here to use their restroom and to buy a snack or drink while I wait for my Tesla to finish charging. Unlike their extremely expensive gas, the price of their snacks and drinks are decent. I've found the cashiers to be very nice and friendly. Their restrooms are sometimes decent, but I've found them to be quite dirty as of late. If you're looking for a meal or a treat, you can either eat at Subway or Dairy Queen, both of which are connected to this Shell station.

Hence, we had to take a detour and use an alternate route. Highway 40 was one of the routes and my intuition said to take it. It was already late in the evening and it was raining. As much as I would have preferred not to get wet in the rain, I knew we had to stop at least once for a potty break LOL. After an hour plus of driving, we arrived at this rest area. I was surprised it had an official name for it... John Wilkie Rest Area. Anyway, we got lucky as it was sprinkling just a tiny bit at the time. We quickly used the women's restroom and went our merry way. It was clean and well stocked for the most part. There are only 4 stalls. One of them was out of commission so only 3 available for use at the time. From what I saw even in the dark LOL, it's a well kept and maintained rest area with picnic benches covered and uncovered for use... nice!!! Do stop by if you need a rest and/or potty break because it'll be another hour or so before the next rest area. Safe and happy travels!!!

That large Dr. Pepper with free refills you enjoyed in Seligman, AZ has yelled "Margin cal, good…read moresir!" and you've just screamed past the last turnoff before the Colorado River heralds your arrival in California. Squirming in your seat, and hoping the border checkpoint line isn't too long, you suddenly remember the John Wilkie Rest Area, and announce "I'm gonna make it!" to no one in particular. John Wilkie was a CALTRANS superintendent, who advocated for workers with disabilities. Through his vision, people with disabilities were included in work forces, building and supporting infrastructure and roadside rest stops like this one. Mind you, if the whole outfit was a pile of cat litter and a garden spade, that would still be a better option then stopping in Needles, California. Thankfully, this rest stop is well-maintained, clean, and modern. As with most remote places, best to keep your wits about you, particularly under the cover of night. Situational awareness, that sort of thing... But for the most part, this is a lot safer than stopping on the side of the highway, and trying to duck behind a tumble weed or something. So go ahead, get that big chocolatey blizzard at the Ludlow Dairy Queen... You can always stop here; or better yet, they have a really good hospital in Kingman.

This is a very pet friendly place, just ensure pets are leashed for safety since this area is in the open and near roads. I felt safe from wildlife while walking around the rest area for a quick stretch due to the clean grounds visibility . This stop is maintained daily and has minimal landscaping around. During the day there was plenty of presence of visitors and employees for a weekday. There are multiple stalls (4) in the women restrooms but at my time of arrival 2 were not working, maintenance was repairing those. This rest stop is also a common stop for truck drivers but parking is big enough to keep the area safe and accessible to big rigs and regular vehicles. Plenty of picnic tables to use while you enjoy a quick snack in the desert area and a nice breath of fresh air .

The gift stores had moderate priced items and a nice selection. The free museum gave a nice history of this Route 66 stop. The gem was definitely the pay museum. We learned so much about the history of the area and the dust bowl. As an added bonus was the electric car display. So much fun! We almost skipped this because we were just planning on a short stop. Glad we stayed and explored! We were traveling with an active 6 year old and she stayed engaged throughout. So many fun photo backdrops made this a stop that made our highlight reel from our vacation. Plan to spend at least an hour. Your paid admission to the museum also includes 3 other stops. Not all are open every day. We only made it to one of the 4. Again, good for all ages. Entertaining and informative.

They have a nice selection of stickers and postcards. They also sell stamps so it was perfect for the postcards I was sending. The stickers are my latest collection (it doesn't take up much space LoL!) Upstairs is the Route 66 Museum (stairs and elevator are available for use). Before heading to the museum, stop to read about the Guardian Angel of Route 66 StoryFile Experience, Angel Delgadillo. He has a very special relationship with the road called Route 66.
