He ran my card before pumping so I didn't know the actual $ amount (no receipt) it was a loaner car from dealer. It took approximately 1 gallon. He explained the process and that I must of needed more gas than I thought I would and that would explain the cost. I didn't know the amount pumped because I was not offered a receipt! I've know Bob for over 50 years since we first met as Kindergartners in Estherville Iowa. As such, I would have preferred that my Son be there too, especially since Bob has Boys of his age (and younger!). However, I also knew that I didn't want to "die" on that hill. :) The Kid is very responsible and called me on time to let me know that it was time to pick him up. He had a nice full evening, as did I. My Son was ready to go when I arrived. Unfortunately, the gas gauge read empty and I needed some petrol before heading back the Hotel. Since I was past the point of price shopping, this Union 76 Service Station was in direct sight and convenience. The Station seemed a little dark and tattered when I pulled in. I was ready to "gas and go", but soon remember that this was Oregon and that I needed "help". The attendant had just stepped inside (for a what I assumed was a comfort break) and initially seemed a little defensive about what he called my "2 minute inconvenience" after I tracked him down. I immediately thought of my lovely wife Gayle, and stayed friendly, relaxed and empathetic. My Dad also used to run a service station back in Iowa, and I haven't forgotten where I'm from. He dropped the attitude quickly and we ended up having a nice chat as he was filling up the tank in a very professional manner. I also kind of agree with the guy that the owner of this place might want to invest a little more into his property regarding overall curb appeal. After all, gasoline is pretty much gasoline, and there's usually another one just down the road.

This was super late and open without an attendant which is, quite honestly, lovely for me to not have to engage with someone and pump my own gas so that I can zip in and out fast. My only complaint is that the pump asked if I wanted a receipt. I pressed yes to have it tell me that the receipt was inside with the attendant. Considering that there is a spot right next to the card reader for it to print, that is just dumb. I was happy that the gas prices are 14 cents less than all the other stations around plus this is in a spot where I can see it stlll being easy to enter and exit during daylight traffic. Entering and exiting businesses is so dangerous anymore with how poorly people drive and also with how drunk and/or high the average driver is lately. Be safe out there my friends!

I finally pulled to side of road and looked for a gas station nearby. It said 76 was only 3 minutes away, so I set course. I felt instant relief when I came upon the gas station. It's very small with 2 islands. My gas tank is on the left and I was trying to get to the one that made sense, except two vehicles took up that space and not enough room to get behind them. So I pulled up to the pump that was on passenger side, thinking the hose would reach. There wasn't an attendant to tell me otherwise. Which irked me because I hate to pump my own gas..spoiled Oregonian that I am. I came from a state where you pump your own..I just prefer not to. Anyways, I put my debit card in, and now I need to remove hose and select the grade. And then I couldn't get the hose to reach! I wasn't sure what to do, but I'm sure I did the most unsafe thing. I placed the hose on the ground, got back in vehicle and turned it so the gas tank was next to the pump. I pumped my gas. I selected to receive a receipt, which said it was printing, but I never got it. From now on, I'm getting gas close to home, and making sure I have enough gas before trekking to parts unknown!

This bill lifted a long-standing ban on self-service fueling, which had been in place since 1951. The new law allows, but does not require, gas stations to offer self-service pumps, with the stipulation that they cannot have more self-service pumps than full-service pumps at any given station. The price for self-service and full-service must also be the same. Here's a more detailed breakdown: Historical Context: Oregon had banned self-service gas since 1951, citing safety concerns. HB 2426: This bill allows gas stations to offer self-service, but it is not mandatory. Key Provisions: Full-service requirement: Gas stations must have at least as many full-service pumps as self-service pumps. Oregon gas law does not require full-service pump attendants, but it does require that gas stations in the 16 most populated counties offer at least one attendant gas station employee in those communities be available at all times to pump gas. Multnomah county being one of the largest counties in the state - they are required to provide full service. In the other 20 counties, self-service is allowed at all pumps, but stations must still have someone available to assist if needed. This station is not in compliance with the law as outlined as they refuse to pump gas during operational hours. Price parity: Self-service and full-service prices must be the same. State Fire Marshal oversight: The Oregon State Fire Marshal has the authority to enforce the law and ensure compliance.
