Unfortunately, we didn't make it out that week so missed the special, but when we did stop by a couple of weeks later.... WOW! We fell in love with the old school bodega feel. The smells of the fresh produce, the fresh meets, the music, the pleasant demeanor and greeting from the cashiers, workers on the floor, and the butcher team took me back to my days back in New York and when visiting family in Puerto Rico. Other reviews complain about the tight aisles and busy butcher counter.... REALLY??? Pretentious much??? If anyone can complain about the fully stocked store and navigation challenges, it would be me as I am a blind Puerto Rican relying on a white cane and on my Nubian Queen to navigate. However, I am not complaining, will not complain, and would not have it any other way! We've since visited multiple times, most recently. This past Friday. I've been holding off on a review, because I wanted to be sure the experience wasn't a one-off. Well, I can tell you today, it wasn't. From the moment you walk in you are greeted by the cashiers. As you make your way through the store, the workers on the floor greet you and offer help. And, the butcher team, apparently, recognized my wife and I and made an extra effort to get my attention to greet me and welcome me back with a warm shout of "PRIMO!!" So, that's the vibe. Now to the prices. While the standard grocery prices are comparable to the big chains, we have found that the meat prices more than make up for it. While the prices are great, the meat quality is not compromised. I just downed a plate of cubed steak and onions and you'd think they'd used a prime cut as it was tender and not full of tendons. You want ox tails, go here. You want chicken wings, go here. You want flank steak for an awesome Ropa Vieja, go here. You want those verduras - malanga lila, llatia, green and ripe plantains, go here. And don't forget dessert - pick up a cheese flan at checkout. Unfortunately, I never got to bring my Mom here as I lost her earlier this year , but, I would have gone broke and gained a lot of weight, because she would start picking everything up and start cooking all the Puerto Rican staples as soon as we got home - R.I.P. Mama! BTW, their website is up to date and keeps you posted of their weekly specials. We keep an eye on that and their IG and plan our trip from Clearwater when our supplies get low. Thank you El Grande Supermarket!

Everything is in Spanish for pricing, so it was hard to tell how much stuff cost. Guys behind the counter do not speak much English, but that is expected. Aisles are slim, and you have to maneuver to get through. Tons of international ingredients. If I did not have hubby with me, I would have browsed longer. Sour orange marinade, spices galore, hoja santa, canela, and banana leaves. So hard to find, but now I know where to go. I wish they had molcajetes, as I had to sell mine when I moved. Cashiers did not speak any English, and they kind of ignored me. No biggie. I definitely will go back right when they open for less congestion. And I will brush up on my Spanish meats. LOL

Fun advice: it helps to be able to speak Spanish, but you can point and the cashiers are bilingual, and respond in kind if you speak Spanish to them.

We ordered a ton of food: chicharrones, the Dominican mixed meat platter, rice and beans, mangu, avocado salad, and mixed salad. The Dominican mixed meat platter was actually called fried chicken, but there was no fried chicken in it, it was more of a mixed grill plate with two types of sausage, pork ribs, chicharrones, and baked chicken. The food was tasty. Nothing out of this world. The salads were pre-dressed before packaging and were pretty soggy (and the avocado was very brown) on arrival. The mangu was crumbly and bland, more like a mofongo. The other food arrived lukewarm, something fixable but not great if one expects to eat right after the food is delivered. We also ordered 4 juices. I specified 4 different flavors that appealed to me. Two apparently were unavailable, but rather than call me to ask for substitutions, they just chose the substitutions for me. I would have preferred that they double up on the two available flavors rather than give me two random ones as I really don't love tamarindo juice, so that ended up poured down the drain. I will say that the carrot lemon juice was my son's favorite, so that was a good surprise. The passion fruit juice was good. The orange juice with sweetened condensed milk was not great, would not order again. All in all, this place is fine, and certainly, for mostly being a grocery store, the prepared foods are pretty good. Would I order from them again? Maybe.

My daughter and I decided to visit India Bazaar, and the experience was great. I quickly found the spices I needed, along with a good selection of options. I also found fresh curry leaves and cilantro at a great price. They don't have a large selection of produce like Patel Bros, but if you live west of I-275, east of Veterans, south of Vandyke, and need spices in a pinch, I recommend India Bazaar. I found the required spices reasonably priced at $2.99: black mustard seed, chaat masala, and dried chilies. I was pleased with my experience and will definitely return. The store was easy to navigate, and the owners were extremely prompt when I approached the checkout area, despite receiving a delivery. They were helpful and stopped everything to assist me.

Yes - I can get it from Amazon, but this is a nice break from ordering everything online and I loove human contact. I'm assuming the Indian cashier is one of the owners; She was nice & walked us over to where all the dried spices were located. We made Keema (Spiced Ground Beef) not once, twice, but THREE times this past week because it was so, so delish at home, especially during COVID-19 (weird times) pandemic! In my opinion, Indian food is underrated - it is almost a tie in my book to Asian food because it uses a lot of different dried spices and fresh herbs. We bought a pack of Roti (frozen) & reheated it in a pan on the stovetop. Also, we got a pack of fresh mint only for a $1 (nicely priced) for adding to the dish & for garnishing! I'm challenging myself to cook more Indian food in 2020! They could do a better job of decluttering because there was a bunch of stuff near the coolers and the light that was blinking constantly should be fixed.
