The desk guy suggested that I take it elsewhere as he (personally) thought it may be transmission related. Took it to another local shop and it indeed was the axle. All I know is that I paid $60-something for a "new" (definitely not new) tire. I didn't mind because the other three tires are 2 years old, so this was just on par. Service was really fast.
