We enjoyed our time at Black Mesa Winery. We did a flight of 5 wine tastings and had the…read morecharcuterie board with toast, jelly, cheese and pecans. It was delicious! My favorite tasting was the Criadera. I love the indoor and outdoor dining options. The staff was great and even offered a free rubber duck when we told her we were celebrating our wedding anniversary here. We purchased the Honey cider and Bite Me cherry cider to go. They were both great! This was a wonderful experience!

So we did a day of wine tasting recently to hit a couple old favorites (Vivac and La Chiripada) and…read moredecided we'd give Black Mesa a shot again (didn't remember it as spectacular, but had the extra time with heading up that way from staying in Santa Fe). It kind of lived up to what I remembered for better or worse. Some of the dessert wines are pretty decent, but otherwise I find their standard wine to be unremarkable. Nothing quite tasted as anticipated based on the varietals and I also noticed a lot of their wine was bottled a remarkably long time ago (tasting and selling vintages that were in some cases almost 10 years old). Everything my wife and I tried other than their red chili dessert wine was just kind of "meh." Their cider is alright, but in my opinion slightly overpriced in cans (too much good craft cider you can get for about half the price they are asking). Honestly, I feel like the place is only as popular as it is due to the fact there are really only about 4 or 5 wineries in this area and this one kind of appeals to sweet wine drinkers and has a fun and funky vibe to it. If you enjoy solid dry red wine, spend more time hanging out at Vivac or La Chiripada and consider giving this one a pass. I don't think we'll be back.
