All the wines are made with New Mexico grapes, and they offer several estate wines. Every wine we tasted was delicious. While the outdoor seating is great, indoor seating is limited. I am a winemaker so I always like to check other wineries. We stopped here on our way back to Santa Fe from Taos. It is located just off the highway. The tasting room is rather small but it has a very nice outdoor area near the vines. The young man in the tasting was quite knowledgeable. Of the wines we tasted, we liked the unoaked Chardonnay, the Cabernet Franc and the Bordeaux blend. Solid wines. Recommended. read more

What is not to love? We stopped by Vivac after passing this winery probably a million times en route to Taos. Turns out there is a threshold, and it's best to slooooow down once you hit Vivac. Or else you will miss out on tasting some of the most interesting wines and chocolates here in NM. We experienced a very lovely kickoff to our weekend up North, right here. This is Dixon's best kept secret! I purchased a Groupon prior to visiting my home state as I wanted to do something different. I wasn't sure how it all worked but they give you 4 flights of your choice to take to your table. I chose all red cause it's my favorite and they were all excellent wines! I guess I was expecting it to be somewhat bitter due to NM soil but that wasn't the case. Kudos to the two servers as their service was excellent and they were super nice! When I finished my flight I wanted a glass of cab and she gave it to me gratis! I was like what? She said don't worry about it! I did tip generously. Another plus with the groupon is it includes a bottle of Tempranillo wine! I did save it at mom's for when I come back for Thanksgiving. Drive up was very nice once you got past the road construction. Winery is really quaint and views are breathtaking. It was a hot summer afternoon but immediately cooled down with some light sprinkles of rain and thunderstorms/clouds. Totally love this place and will definitely be back! read more

Though the Cabernet Sauvignon was not as full-bodied as most Cabs - it was more like a Merlot - it was decent and the weather - mid-70s - and the atmosphere were perfect ... and the rose petal and walnut chocolate was very good. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Taos area and you've got a couple hours to sit and relax. The owner, Michele, commented on my original post and let me know that the Cab being less full-bodied than a California Cab is intentional. They like to style their wines after the wines of the old world and keep the alcohol levels lower, natural acidity up and complexity intact while showing the terroir - natural environment - of New Mexico. While taking the scenic route-- we decided to drop in and do a tasting. Snow still capped the mountains but the sun warmed the blue sky with the vineyards just beginning to sprout. Our server knew his wines and really knew by a few questions what you would like and not like. For the tasting, six wines is what you had. There was a good selection to choose from so it was worth it. Our server gave great information on each wine and even suggested food to pair. We really enjoyed our visit. Well worth the highly scenic drive from Taos. You can create your own flight of wine for tasting only $12. I was actually impressed with the wines, all local, and the Vivac wines were actually impressive based on my expectations for wines from Texas and New Mexico. My party enjoyed the Rose, Tempranillo, and Divino. The winery setting is charming, nestled in the valley with some scenic cliffs and rock formations to view from the tasting room yard and patio. We also has some of their handmade chocolates with our wine, as they were delicious and paired wonderfully. I would rate 5 stars, but prefer a little more history, knowledge, and background with my wine tasting. While the server was very friendly, the wine was simply served without any of the above history, knowledge, or pairings to upsell some of the nice offerings this tasting room had to offer. Since we were the only customers at the time, I think these details would have been nice; in addition to table side service, instead of having to walk up to the counter. Later in our visit, the tasting room began to get more busy. We will certainly be back on our next visit to the area. read more

A cute winery that makes for a fun stop during the drive from Santa Fe to Taos. There are several signs along the road about the winery so it's easy to find Vivac Winery. Being along the main road it's easy to swing in and doesn't require going out of the way to visit. The winery has a tasting room that offers tastings, a case of chocolates, and some merchandise. Outside there is a large patio with plenty of tables for those that want to enjoy the mountain scenery with their wine. My husband and I each enjoyed a tasting which offered six samples of our choosing from the list of wines. We were told that each tasting comes out to a glass of wine, but in the end it didn't seem like a whole glass. I'm not complaining because I was able to continue the drive to Taos instead of handing the keys over to my husband. I was impressed with the number of wines and the nice variety of wines this small winery offered. We had whites, reds, sweets, and keg wines to choose from for our tasting. They even offer cheese plates and chocolate plates. I wasn't sure what to expect from New Mexico wines, but found that they were pretty good. They weren't the best wines I've had, but there weren't any wines that I thought were bad. My favorite wine was the 2015 Amante, a port style which was full bodied and sweet. Set in a vineyard, they have a little marked and tasting bar, but they really focus on a collection of tables on a patio and under the table. Next time on your road to Taos (or from), be sure to make a stop at this vineyard and winery before zipping past Dixon. This brothers and wives team venture started in 1998 as a place for making some quality wines from New Mexico. Spending some time abroad at wineries and vineyards in South America and Europe along with some UC Davis training has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge for their business. Named for the Spanish term "high-altitude refuge", the Padbergs have established three area estate vineyards to draw on from grapes with additional grapes sourced from the Deming area. On the estate, are vines of Riesling, Petit Verdot, Pinot Meunier, as well as some others. The hand built tasting room has been opened since 2003. It is quite spacious, and you will be impressed with the designs and flagstone add-ons. Tasting is done by wine flights with a pick of four from their two-dozen plus list. We started off with the 2021 estate Riesling. It is a nice dry white with good notes of apples and pears plus solid acidity. Next, was the 2021 Pinot Noir. It was an easy drinking dry red with some smoky notes and good berry flavors. The 2020 Nebbiolo is more medium bodied, light red color, and solid tannins. Do check out the 2018 red blend Devino. It's mix of 40% Refosco, 40% Sangiovese, and 20% Montepulciano. This medium bodied jewel is rich in berry notes and has a smooth finish. Barbera fans rejoice! Their 2020 release is quite fruity, floral, and luscious to enjoy. Syrah fans will be pleased with the 2019 Abbott. With tobacco notes, rich tannins, and mild acids, what's not there to savor with this one. One of the more unusual reds you should try is the 2020 Refosco. This northern Italian variety seems to have adapted quite well in New Mexico and just might be your next red wine lover craving. There is about 15% of Cabernet Franc in this Refosco vintage and presents itself with big tannins, some currant, and rich berries. Lastly, we got to taste the 2020 Aglianico. This vintage has 10% Syrah, 5% Abbott Syrah, 5% Refosco, and 5% Malbec mixed in which only adds to the aromas and flavors producing floral notes and berries along with earthy undertones and firm tannins. This one could also age quite nicely for the next 10 years. The surrounding views and overview of the estate vineyard will make a great wine pairing for your visit. Enjoy! read more

If you are a fan of whites this may not be your favorite place but if you enjoy a great red or port this hidden gem is a definite must (since we visited last year they also offer local beers). Yes you must pay to taste but if you are like me, you find not only one or two wines you like but more and jump both feet in and join their wine club. They also have delicious chocolate to enjoy aside you glass. I decided on Luminosa while the hubby enjoyed a Malbec. You can also purchase a bottle to enjoy but we were headed home and opted for a glass each (that didn't stop us from buying a few for home). The patio is breath taking. I highly recommend bringing a light snack to enjoy. I know the weekends they tend to be busy so if you can escape for a weekday you won't be disappointed. Stay local and get away. What a wonderful little winery. We were in town from AZ and stopped to enjoy a tasting. We would consider ourselves avid wine drinkers with some of our favorites being St Francis and Miner in Napa. We were shocked by how high quality the wine was and had to keep tasting until we had tried all but one of the red wines (3 tastings later). The patio is a great place to sip wine and take in the beautiful mountains and surrounding vineyard. The staff here are friendly and helpful. We made sure to stop on our way back to AZ to pick up a few bottles. We would be regulars here if we were local. read more

Apparently not everyone had the same great time that we did at Vivac one snowy afternoon last month. Sage was behind the bar and was an exceptional host: knowledgeable about their wines, with a most interesting work background and a warm, engaging personality. We thought the minimal charge for wine tasting was appropriate, though both my wife and I and our accompanying couple from nearby Penasco left with mixed cases of wine, so the tasting charge was waived. We traveled home with 6 bottles of the Dixon Red, a very appealing blend, 3 bottles of the very refreshing Rose' of Sangiovese, which we may uncork soon with 80 degree temps here in Mississippi already, 2 bottles of the Tempranillo, a good solid choice, and 1 bottle of the Club Select, certainly the best bottle of the bunch, but solidly outside our customary price range. We felt very much as if we were hanging out in a friend's den or family room, sipping slowly and talking about everything from northern New Mexico to Spain to literature as the afternoon passed and the snow kept falling. Had an occasion to stop in the tasting room in 2007. Back then the brothers were only making reds. Was very impressed with the wines that I tasted; especially the nebbiolo. Since we were flying from NH and had limited room in the suitcase I picked up a single bottle of the 04. I put it down in the cellar and pulled it out today, bringing it down to a group tasting of high end italian wines at the best wine store in the state. The owner and a few very knowledgable friends sampled it after it had been open an hour. It was fantastic; elegant, smooth and balanced with a refined finish. This NM nebbiolo outshone all of its Italian cousins, a few three times the price, and impressed everyone. Next time I visit the city different I'm planning to head north for a return visit! read more

We were a little early for check in on our way to Taos and decided to stop and taste some local wines. The woman serving the wines was very friendly and answered all of our questions. $3 for 6 tastings is incredibly reasonable, and since we bought a bottle of their excellent syrah it ended up being free. I prefer dry reds so I really enjoyed almost everything they offered, especially the Divino which had a hint of cinnamon and the tempranillo. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area! read more

On our way to Taos we came across this place. Stopped by for a glass and ended up doing the 6 wine tasting and having a glass afterwards. Shawn, was tending the bar and made the experience stellar. Very knowledgeable about wines, regions and wine making. We loved the reds, specially the tempranillo and the perit sirah. The whites, not so much.... but the sangiovese rose was lovely with lots of strawberry notes on the nose and palate. The place is super fun and friendly. We highly recommend it.
