At this point the St. Bernard remains only as a memory to those who cherished it and for whom Jean Mayer became a lifelong friend. It was all about spirit, and the new owner is as spiritless as the aimless concrete slabs that stand in mute testimony to his incapacity. It is sad, as the St. Bernard in many ways was Taos, the mountain still there, as Jean oft repeated to me, but the spirit gone. There was hope, but it was chased away by a numb corporate view. It is closed and will be for a year or two. They tore it down to meet codes after Jean Mayer died. He was one of a kind. I hear they are using all the decor when they rebuild it. I hope it will have the food, service and ambience that Jean was known for. read more

This hotel is an icon on the Taos slopes. Seated at the base of Al's Run if my memory serves me. This was our annual ski trip for almost a decade. Jean and his brother were amazing host, fixed menu was looked forward to at the end of the day. The meals plans purchased with your room were always worth the cost. I've read it's currently under a complete renovation due to be finished early this year. I certainly hope the renovations will include the European ski village charm that all who love the St Bernard have come to love. Can't wait to see photos of the new St Bernard. read more

We came to the outdoor deck for aprés after a long day of skiing. I do not recommend it. For $13 you can get a hockey puck of a burger with cold fries with a buffet of condiments you add yourself. Ridiculously priced. The bar is cash only and they do have an ATM inside the main dining room (which is extremely dark and lacking character, surprising for such a nice hotel). The outdoor bar has lots of family style seating and some raised bleacher-style seating to watch skiers come down the final run. The beer options were a little boring, but they do have a full bar. The atmosphere, the food, and the drinks are awesome here! I love having apres ski drinks here...as well as during ski drinks. The bartenders and staff are so friendly and awesome, but John is by far the best bartender in all of the ski valley! For lunch you can eat upstairs on the deck, or enjoy lunch in the dining room or at the bar! The dinner service is also incredible, as well as the night life scene! The St Bernard is the *complete* experience! It's like a family away from home, set in a Swiss ski village worlds away. A few vignettes of your week-long experience: * Jean Mayer (the amazing proprietor and founder of Ski Week in Taos) - shouting "qu'est-ce que c'est??" as he carries a tray full of foie gras on filet mignon (yes!) to your family-style dining table. * Lapping chair one all day, skiing back into the hotel via the ski-in ski-out porch landing for a hot lunch, then back immediately for a full afternoon of black runs. * Enjoying the only night-life in town as a local band plays in the hotel bar after 8pm, and chatting with the hotel staff (many of whom are part of the Mayer family or have worked at the St Bernard for 10+ years) * Being humbled and beaten-down by the week-long ski lessons, and finally feeling better about your snow carving after grabbing a swig at the martini tree on day #6 If you want to get into the hotel rotation, be ready to start at the bottom because its schedule is already mostly filled by regulars that have been coming for decades (for good or bad). Loved the fireplace in the center of the lodge. Great place to have a couple apres ski beers. Owner is renowned for his fixed menus. Make reservations for dinner. Next time we come to Taos we will plan ahead. Stopped in for a slope side lunch. Veggie options meager, but the soup of the day was carrot ginger. I took a chance and it was delicious! Phenomenal experience at the St Bernard. The food, service, and music exceed all expectations. The atmosphere is perfect for the location, and the staff immediately made us feel at home. The prixe fixe menu eliminated the need for tough choices, and the chef's selections were creative. A carafe of a nice French red was constantly refilled. Course one was a refreshing gazpacho. Second course was vensison with bone marrow, wild mushrooms, baked purple potato, and fresh greens. Dessert was bananas foster and coffee. Can't wait for another visit! read more

I had one of the most amazing meals ever at the St. Bernard. We were staying with friends who had a place and only went to the St. Bernard for dinner. I hear their ski week is wonderful and Jean Mayer is legendary. I've been on a bit of a Yelp hiatus and it has been over a month since we were in Taos. Every couple of days, I think about our meal at the St. Bernard and start salivating and realized that I really have to review this place. The dining area is rustic and homey. They have a really great fire in dining room that serves as a heater. We all huddled around the fire until it was time to get served. We started with a warm and creamy beet borscht that was the perfect way to start the meal. Our entree was an beautiful surf and turf. Although everyone is served the same meal at the same time, all of the food was cooked to perfection. Banquet halls should learn to cook from Jean Mayer. But I digress. Anyway, the beef medallion was so flavorful and the seasonal veggies were a feast for the eyes and mouth. This is what local, fresh, and organic should taste like. Wait, I haven't even gotten to the lobster yet. The lobster tail was curled up in such a pretty presentation and it tasted divine. The flavors were so rich and the portions were generous. For dessert, we had a yummy floating island. It's so hard for me to describe what is so great about this place. I've had floating island before; I've had steak, lobster, and borscht before. But they didn't taste like this and they weren't served in such a homey atmosphere. The bf had skipped out on this trip and if there's one thing he missed out on, it would be this incredible meal. This was truly a 5* experience. While I love to eat, I don't get super excited about food that often. This was my first trip to the St. Bernard. I was first greeted by the wonderful CHRISTINE. She patiently explained everything and made sure we felt right at home. This continued thruout our stay. Christine made sure that every whim was taken care of. The hotel staff, all around, was pleasant to deal with. The St. Bernard became our home away from home. So many guests have been returning for years. The service, the food, the ski lessons, I can't say enough positive things. I will be returning next year for sure and ski with the new friends I made this year. I was so sad to leave.......on another note- Christine,of course, immediately mentioned my special diet and made sure it was taken care of properly, each and every day. Well walked into a vibe of entitlement and aloof staff. Sat at the bar ordered a margarita with top shelf tequila ( or their version) watched as the bartender a short blond poured well tequila and when I called her out on it was told "your wrong". I would of left there, as I am a restaurant consultant, but was meeting my family I then tried to engage asking questions and all I got were curt snippy answers as if I was inconveniencing her. However as I watched her interactions with other guests and her co workers I realized it was not me. I moved to a table by the wine bar to wait for my family and a great server came over she had glasses and blond hair wished I could remember her name but anyhow she took the time to tell me a bit about the place and the ski valley itself asked if I needed anything I ordered another margarita. As I waited I thought this place is cool has a good feel but that ambiance was shattered when I heard the two waitresses behind the wine bar complaining about tips and gossiping.. I then got my margarita which was a total short pour full of ice I pointed this out and my server tactfully tried to reconcile the situation but it just came back full of sweet n sour mix, for $14 i would of thought it could of had some tequila in it. Meanwhile the two were behind me chit chatting away, texting, eating all the while my server was delivering food, drinks, clearing ya know her job and assuming others all with a smile. Finally one of the other servers came out went over to a table that was just delivered food and talked at them about herself while it was obvious they wanted to eat then left the table and went back to her buddies and said flirting is the best way to get tips that's how ya do it. I thought you did it how ours did by being genuinely nice and doing her job as well as the rest of her team.The food was good she steered us in the right direction for lunch told us about the dinners, where to go in town and the surrounds all with out being intrusive. If I go back I will check if she is working otherwise we will move on and I will let my friends know. A disappointment but had a nice conversation. Oh and the margaritas thumbs down, too bad because this could be a gem of a place if it had the right staff. read more

The St. Bernard is a truly 5 star dining experience. We were not staying at the hotel but managed to get a reservation for dinner after receiving approval from the owner. Do not take this as a negative in any way. Most of the dinner guests are hotel guests as well and dinner is part of the lodging package. If there are seats available they will seat people who appear to fit the profile of hotel guests. I am so glad we obtained seats. Dinner is served family style and one the table guests will serve each course. The food is outrageously good. The guests are a wonderful group of people from all over the country. The staff is very polite and extremely efficient. We had a superb time at this very memorable dinner. If you're skiing at Taos you should really find a way to have dinner here. If you can't manage dinner stop in for a truly remarkable lunch. read more

I was looking around for a nice place to sit and eat breakfast. This place was enchanting. Looks like it was plucked out of the alps and deposited here. Unfortunately they don't sell breakfast, but the proprietor gave me a meal and didn't make it easy for me to pay. No even asked for change to leave a nice tip and they refused. Not sure I will come back to Taos because I am afraid of skiing, but if I do, this is place worth checking on. Wish them the best. read more

We didn't stay at the hotel -- but enjoyed lunch in the restaurant on Christmas day. Very cozy atmosphere -- like being at a ski lodge in the Alps with a roaring fire! They have a popular bar and the restaurant was great. We enjoyed everything we ate -- but the Frito Pie was a standout dish. Very friendly service. Highly recommended for a visit! read more

Was a pleasant time at dinner here the last night. everyone at the table we were sitting at seemed to be a regular at Tao's for the past 10-15 years. Heard good stories. Food was awesome. Served a 4 course meal. small portions, everything was delicious and made out to still be healthy as well. Left feeling satisfied. Great wine list as well. I am from Paris originally and have lived and skied in Switzerland, France & Italy. My experience at the St. Bernard was the quintessential, delightful and thoroughly French vacation in every way. Jean Mayer, Dadou Mayer were as superb on skis as they were as continental hosts, and Alain Veth beautifully rounded out the French experience. I have never been in a more authentic European ambience anywhere in the US. The food was incomparable and reminded me of France with every dish. It really is as good as it gets for an advanced skier in great shape with plenty of money. Heated catch your breath area next to the chair lift, Awesome outdoor grill/bar. Largest hot tub ever seen. World class evening dining that promotes meeting interesting visitors from all over the world. This destination is out of the way but very well worth it if you can stay multiple days. It takes at least a day to adjust your breathing to the extreme altitude. When you return to sea level you will feel incredible. Be back soon. Wonderful place to stay. Very European--that is, lots of charm, friendly but no glitz. This is all inclusive--you stay for one week (Saturday to Saturday) and included are three gourmet meals each day, lift tickets, ski lessons and, for families, children's activities in the evening so adults can enjoy a relaxing dinner. The people that work here return year after year because they love what they do, and it shows. As a result, the guests also return year after year, creating a family atmosphere. The ski school and ski programs are both best-in-class--my 8 year old is now skiing black diamond runs after taking one week of lessons here for the past 4 years (and I've improved dramatically as well).
