Pubs - they're something that we as a people do really well; they are usually small and cluttered and even though smoking is no longer allowed, they manage to retain that sultry, smokey atmosphere, full of laughter and chat and beer. honestly, there's nowhere like it for an eve of catching up and chatting.
Restaurants are something we also do well and are so varied its harder to give an overall all encompassing description.
Pubs with restaurants attached are not something we do well, particularly of the "oh, people are asking for food, we'd best throw an extension on the back of the pub and call it gastro" variety.
The Sheebeen is one such establishment; the front part, the main bar is lovely and welcoming, the restaurant part at the back is fairly soulless; a room, spartanly decorated with a couple of old sings and nets and shells for atmosphere... it really doesn't work.
Happily, it is redeemed by the food, the most important part of any meal I think you'll agree.
I had the pork belly which was spectacular in and of itself.... the chef tried to be a bit decorative on the plate which
A. didn't work and
B. didn't suit the place.
My twice- cooked chips were definitely OK and much enjoyed but lacked that crispy outside I was expecting.
There were 12 of us and not a scratch was left on a plate, all dishes were tasty and finished completely... so, that's the punchline really.... overall good food, definitely a place to go to for informal dining.
The wine selection was not bad, the beer selection was that awful Guinness, Heineken and bulmers mix. read more
