YES PLEASE!!! The moment I saw this restaurant / bar that resembled a castle I knew I belonged in this pub asap. Thankfully, the experience did not disappoint. Wide array of interesting items like Venison Pie you will see on the menu here. I did choose the Venison Pie, and it was sweet and tasty. The seafood soup was very good as well and was decorated with a puffy fish and I want to say a mint of some sort put in place of where an eyeball would go, very cute indeed! I remember loving the large oysters and great local beer on tap. Highly recommend if you are in the Donegal area. The Donegal Castle is not far from here as well if you want to make a day out of it. Great atmosphere and pulls a great pint for a Kilkenny and a Kinnegar black rabbit nitro We really enjoyed our Bread platter for the appetizer and the service was friendly but it was really really slow for the entree. Luckily we weren't in a rush and enjoying the experience but after 40 minutes between apps and entrees we started to worry our food went somewhere else lol. The Fish and chips and the Wild venison pie were good but pretty basic but we did enjoy the ambience. read more

Aptly named bar/restaurant that's super close to the Donegal Castle! Food was super tasty -- I got a venison pie since I haven't seen that on a menu anywhere else yet. It looked on the smaller side but is definitely filling enough for a meal! My friends each got the fish n chips, which is always a good staple here! :] Service was friendly and attentive! read more

After my mom and I checked into our Airbnb on this quick stop in Donegal last month, we went out and walked to the city center to find somewhere to eat; since it was a tad late, we weren't expecting much to be open but we saw this awesome place. We walked in, were seated immediately and put in our drink orders. This place was super busy too; always a good sign. The waiter was very nice and accommodating and we got our drinks rather quickly. The food took a bit but they were super busy. The food was really good. I got the Irish Stew and it was really good. I would definitely eat here again if I'm in the area in the future. read more

Beautiful restaurant on the outside and inside close to a cathedral and the castle. Fast service and good food. I got a bacon cheeseburger that was much bigger than expected but so good! My husband enjoyed his ravioli with garlic bread. read more

This place has such charm. You are immediately greeted with a smile by the staff. They are so lovely and accommodating. Our table had the seafood chowder, fish and chips, and the steak special. The steak was SO TENDER you could've cut it with a butter knife. The fish and chips was perfectly crisp and cooked well. The chowder was the star of the show.... Don't get a cup, get a bowl! We stopped by Olde Castle Bar many a years ago, while on a self-driving Ireland excursion, and I realized my review never posted- After a cold exploration of the area, we wandered in, hungry belly desperate, for a hot meal & a cool beer- I opted for the shepard's pie w.fresh veggies & hubby the venison pie w.champs-splitting the meal- adding on some Irish coffees, then switching to Guinness- Overall, the vibe inside was delightful- the warm &cozy we were hoping for in a pit stop- with friendly staff The food wasn't overly amazing, but it hit the spot-quite rich flavor in the gravy sauces, with average sides- Not a bad visit. read more

Fussy place. We arrived about a quarter to eight. They ignored us and kept us waiting a long time and then said the kitchen closes at eight and since we were not yet seated they would not seat us. We offered to order on the spot as we were hungry and had had a long time to look over the menu. The hostess (who had been away from her station during our long wait) said no. The folks waiting behind us were also turned away. As was a large family that entered as we were leaving. They must be doing very, very well to turn away so much business. read more

Great food, great company. Ended up making a new friend here! The vibes are very conducive to that. I was seated at a table near the bar, tucked away in a corner. After ordering, a French woman was seated next to me at the other table. We were both there alone, on vacation - conversation! But obviously, that can happen other places. The food here helps make memories and bring people together. I had the venison pie, which is rare in modern Ireland - deer are apparently protected. The flavor was quite rich. I also wanted to throw a dessert in and selected the apple pie, which was surprisingly lacking in spices. Great crust, better ice cream than the last night - but no spices. Oh well. They have local beers on tap that are worth the try. Menu and draught list are a bit limited, but you should be able to find something on each. Quality dinner and great atmosphere. read more

This is meant to be a TIP rather than a full review but for some reason that option isn't available to me: The Greencastle Gourmet Seafood Platter not good. Very expensive and very ordinary. I've ordered similar platters at seafood-specialty gastro pubs in Ireland and they've been amazing and much cheaper. It was a great disappointment. Otherwise... It's a very charming pub. Service was good. My husband had, I think, the lamb shank and he enjoyed it. Based on my experience of the seafood platter I wouldn't order the seafood here. read more

Decent pub with a nice setting. Food was okay, but a bit pricey.

I am very allergic to bell peppers; the symptoms are like food poisoning (vomiting, diarrhea, acute cramps) and last a day to several days depending on the quantify ingested. I explained my allergy and asked the waitress to please check with the kitchen as to whether there were bell peppers in the food I ordered -- seafood chowder and fish cakes. She returned and said the food was free of bell peppers. Sure enough, as I got home I ran to the bathroom where I spent most of the evening and early morning. It let up a bit in the afternoon, but I still had to stay close to a bathroom. This is not a place I would recommend. read more

I got fish cakes, nice for a light lunch. My son got the cheese burger, he wasn't too happy with it and just ate the chips. The waitress kept asking him what could we have done better, which for a quiet 13 year old was like an interrogation. They said they would not charge us for the burger. read more

Beautiful styled restaurant/pub that has a great selection of food and drinks. My family stopped in on a rainy afternoon after visiting the Donegal Castle across the street and were pleasantly surprised when we got inside. We ordered a round of delicious Irish Coffees to warm us up and a few of us order some food for lunch. Wish we had more places like this back home! The atmosphere is superb! read more

I absolutely love this place. It's small and intimate without being stuffy. While staying in Donegal, my companion and I ate here both nights because we simply couldn't get enough! The Seafood Pie is stuffed full of delicious salmon, mussels, and other fresh seafood. They have plenty of non seafood items as well and a full bar. But the crowning achievement is the Goat Cheese Crouton appetizer. Beautifully presented and wonderfully decadent, I'm sad to leave this town mostly on account that I won't be able to eat this again until I return! read more

It's actually "Olde Castle" bar. I had the wild venison pie with champ, and it was delicious, and the presentation was quite impressive! The dish was very meaty and filling. The meat was tender, and not fatty. The staff was very friendly and quick. The bar is easy to find downtown, and it has a lot of charm. There was a fire in the fireplace, and the decor is rustic, but comfortable. read more

Nicely battered and fried fish paired with cold chips and no lemon. Fish chowder was among the worst I've ever eaten. It tasted like raw flour and was thickened with enough flour to nearly hold the spoon upright. The fish pie was good. read more
