I've been coming to this store for years. The owner is very nice and professional. He reminds me of a caring man who cares for the needs of the community, you know a Mom & Pop store mentality. Quality items, organic items, fresh produce daily. I make sure I spend my money at the Black-owned and operated grocery store. And you should too! read more

constantly change prices. the usual cliche stereotype of overcharging people. would regularly go in but now will cease giving them business they are liars read more

Stopped by Shattuck Market and overall it was an okay experience, but the customer service felt a bit unprofessional. One interaction with an employee came across unnecessarily blunt and made the environment feel a little uncomfortable. The store itself is fine and has what you need, but a more polite and consistent approach to customers would improve the experience a lot. Not terrible, just room for improvement on the service side. read more

This is a reliable market super close to where I live and the owner is incredibly friendly and helpful. Such a neighborhood gem compact with helpful essentials! read more

I absolutely love this little corner market! Super good selection of items (produce, baking, cleaning, snacks, pantry). The owner is super nice and helpful. He's answered the phone every time that I've called to see if he has a certain item I need. Very convenient location and good hours. Overall highly highly recommend! read more

Been living down the block from this place for over a year and finally stopped in. I regret not having done it sooner! The outside does not do it justice - it's far larger inside than it appears. This quaint corner store offers fresh fruits and an array of snacks, drinks, and food items. You really could live off this place if you had to. One of my worries on my last minute pasta sauce and olive oil run was that it'd be double the price of traditional grocery stores, but the prices weren't bad at all! I Ragu pasta sauce for $2.69 and olive oil for less than $5. The guy who helped me check out was super lovely and welcoming too. They have a big sign that says "please show ID with credit card" to avoid fraud and he was so appreciative when I handed him my ID without him having to ask. My husband has stopped in to get change for cash (for our laundry) and they've helped him out with that as well. Great local spot! read more

My son lives right around the corner and raves about this store so I stopped by during my last trip to Berkeley. Impressive selection of food at decent prices, and the owner is very friendly. He keeps the store very clean and tidy. I need a Shattuck Market close to my home! Thank you for being there for my kid and all the other Cal students. read more

As an East Coaster at heart, the lack of bodega options is astounding.* Shattuck Market is my local bodega! Although I wish it was open 'til 1AM**, 11pm is still pretty late. They have a ton of stuff without schlepping to a grocery store. My main source is dessert. I always am trying to be good at the grocery store and never buy dessert, but then I'm at home wanting dessert, so a nice walk is in order. They have It It's Its, they have B&J Fro-Yo/ice cream and even the new non-dairy varietal, they have a limited selection of fresh fruit, candy with a big high five for having some European delicacies like Ritter Sport, Kinder and Haribo. Now, if you really don't wanna to go to the grocery store, they also have frozen burritos, pastas, tomato sauce and other canned/dry good options at a slight higher mark up than you'd find at a Safeway. The owner seems nice, they take credit card and they're open at some convenient times making my sweet tooth happy. Add a deli in the back and you'd make me the happiest person in the world! * No clue what a bodega is? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bodega ** Who am I kidding? I'm about to have a kid, 11pm is fine. read more

I've never written a one star review before, and I'm beyond upset at the experience I just had at this market. I came in for a snack and was yelled it when I came in "what was I looking for" and I said a snack. I grabbed a bag of chips and then was yelled at " you need to leave right now". I asked what I did wrong and he just yelled at me to get out because I was taking pictures of the neighborhood outside before coming in. What in the actual f***? read more

always have a pleasant experience and it's close to my apartment. like to support small business

Shattuck Market has everything but alcohol. herbal teas, sauces, gelato bars, tea drinks, sodas, many varieties, cereals, chips, dairy products, some fresh fruits. buys: "top ramen" oat noodles, yummy masala (.50) -from india, to try sometimes. take outs: -store is stocked full of goodies -items pricey due to location. 4 stars for vast inventory., 3.5 stars read more

TERRIBLE! This store is NEVER open! I'm trying to go to it now at 6:34pm and ONCE AGAIN not open. Please update your business hours or have a sign on your door that says when you're not open. This is very inconvenient to the community! read more

Fantastic corner shop to stop in for Cheerwine, It's-its, polenta, ginger beer, and any other general snacks you might be looking for. It's clean, well-managed and seems always open. Prices are reasonable as well. read more

Shattuck Market - Sunday snack - Grocery Near Me - Berkeley, California

There are a few golden finds at this place, including the unique ice cream flavors. I like to add to the list of yummy and affordable snacks - the kettle chips! But not just any kettle chips! These kettle chips also come in unique flavors that you can't find at your local Safeway! This time, the market is offering Korean BBQ flavor and curry flavor in those big chips bags for about the same price, if not cheaper than from your typical Walgreen's. So go on...stop by this market on your way home and pick up a bag for your next movie night! read more

Hours are also never reliable and horrible customer service. Have seen arguments between man behind cashier and other customers before, but had never happened to me. Today I decided to help out a smaller business during covid quarantine by walking in and purchasing something despite the fact I had no need to buy anything. Was yelled at "Go somewhere else!" after placing my non-intrusive folded bike near me as I was shopping. read more

Shattuck Market - Folded bike doesn't even reach knee. - Grocery Near Me - Berkeley, California

First off--it is a little overpriced (as all well-located corner stores are) but it is relatively reasonably priced. They do have a lot of variety, especially drinks--all the odwalla flavors, orangina, ginger beer, kombucha raw, noyu tea, etc. They have fresh fruit, coffee, breads (all types, pita, tortilla), cereal, household items like deoderant, razors, ets. They sell tobacco products (cigars, papers, chew, cigarettes) but NO ALCOHOL....I know its really hard to get a permit but that would rock! They opened up shortly after I moved about a block away and I have gone to their store about once a week for at least 2 years. One day I saw a short blurb about the owner in a local paper and I mentioned it to him, we started chatting and he is really nice, him and his wife work there alot and they are very friendly and always ask about school, politics and my BF who goes there alot too. They are open till 11pm which is awesome AND they're just going through the city process to open up a deli!! It's gonna be there in a few weeks and their planning on having sandwiches, salads and maybe espresso so looking forward to a good sandwich alternative to EZ stop read more

Hands down the best corner market in the area! Friendly customer service with amazing staff! In the time of COVID-19 we have been able to find most of the items sold out elsewhere! Also, as long time goers this market is always very well stocked with great brands and amazing quality products. Please consider coming here over big chains, I'm sure you'll walk out with everything you need! read more

Someone posted below that they had a bad experience with the customer service... i suspect that they (the customer) did something wrong... The guy who owns this place and works here full time is amazing. He's so kind, offers affordable prices and always welcomes me and other customers into the store with a smiling face. If you live near here and need something random t like an energy drink, soup or one avocado.. go here. Not TJ's, support your local businesses. This place is the best. read more

I'm in disbelief of what just happened to me as a customer. If I could click a close this place down Star I would. I walked in for 5 seconds and the man behind the cashier asked if I was gonna buy something or else I should leave. What kind of store owner tells this to the only customer in the entire store. It was honestly unbelievable and I will never be going back. read more

The main advantage to this store is its convenient location. I live about two doors down from Shattuck Market, and so I go there frequently. It's not the best place in the world, and most of their items are quite pricey. Some things are fairly priced though, like butter and olive oil (what). They also have quite an interesting selection! My favorite thing about Shattuck Market next to its location is its interesting selection. It's really the perfect place for those, "I want to make ____ but I'm missing _____" moments. They have a lot of canned goods, baking goods, and even some fresh produce! Their candy section is unimpressive (and candy selection is important to me) and their hours are somewhat mysterious. I don't believe they have them posted anywhere! They seem to be open until 11pm most nights. Employees are friendly and the store is clean and organized. They don't sell alcohol. Shattuck Market has saved me many trips to Safeway! I'm going to miss living adjacent to a (semi-)convenient store when I move away. read more

Shattuck Market - Shattuck Market - Grocery Near Me - Berkeley, California

Shattuck Market is the working-model epitome of a local mom-and-pop business. The owner is so very friendly (and this is sadly uncommon in Berkeley) that when my husband and I were in Berkeley, we established a rapport with him. He would inquire about our classes and tell us about his wife. We would discuss sports, family and news. He told us about his business, where he worked beforehand, and how he got the idea to open a convenience store. This is the only store I'd frequent to buy Ben & Jerry's at $4.50 a pint, when I could get it at Safeway for a dollar fifty less. It's just nice to stop by and share some friendly conversation. (Of course, it's also handy to stop by if you need a bougie pick-me-up: Kombucha, organic juice, European digestive biscuits, gourmet sausages, energy bars, nuts and grains, organic snacks...) It's an added bonus to find a mini-mart that bucks the mini-mart trend of being dirty, grimy and badly lit. Shattuck Market is pleasant to be in, and has employees that are pleasant to be around. Bottom Line: Feel good for supporting a local business. :) read more

I am IN LOVE with this place. They have everything from rolling papers to avocados. I saw some negatives about the customer service, but every time I go the cashier is very nice. I will definitely be a regular from now on. read more

Shattuck Market is a clean, charming little bodega with a slightly yuppie Berkeley bent. Besides milk, eggs, canned soup, a smattering of produce, and cancer sticks, there are products from companies like Newman's Own. I never knew about Hershey's Dagoba chocolate until I had some from this store. Crucially, Shattuck carries two underrated, fantastic beverages that are rare in convenience stores but so much tastier than most mainstream drinks: Vitamin Water Rescue Green Tea, and Crystal Geyser Juice Squeeze (juicy sparkling water). I actually use those two products as a barometer for how well-rounded a food store's product selection is. On that count, Shattuck passes with flying colors (though I'm sure nutritionists would beg to differ). While I haven't ever attempted to cook a meal solely from ingredients purchased there, they sure help when I need a lemon in a pinch. A city planning notice on the front window indicates plans to add a deli to the store in the coming months. It should be exciting to see how the owners mesh it with their existing products. read more

First and foremost, the location of this place is amazing, right on Shattuck and close to home, what more could you want from a local mini-mart? The owner is polite, friendly, the store is clean, there is a good selection of products, however, I am pretty bummed that there is no beer there. What local mart doesn't have beer? #sadface Other than the no beer thing, I love that they have a great selection of cold beverages, granola, fresh fruit, kombucha, and plenty of chocolate. YUM! Support your local mini-mart and stop in! read more

It creeps me out, and I'm not sure why. The diet sodas are sometimes expired. I like the fact that you can buy Newman's Own pasta sauce at a corner store on Shattuck, but I don't live in Berkeley, so that novelty of convenient quality is lost on me. When I'm walking back to my office from Herbivore, I usually hold off on my beverage purchase until E-Z Stop. That's your better option in the area, although it's a few blocks down. read more

Homade fig treats, check. Kombucha, check. 40 kinds of trail mix, check. Kettle chips, check. Beer....well, you can't have it all in Berkeley without bending over for the man. This place rules. AND they are gonna have a deli soon! Go get your snack on. read more

This store has the best convenience store prices around. Note that this is not a grocery store, it's also not a liquor store, it's a convenience store. And even for just being a convenience store, I find myself doing a lot of my grocery shipping there when I am strapped for time. They have a good selection of the basic fruits and veggies, a good selection of all the staples such as milks, rice, beans, and breads. And of course they have all the extras such as instant noodles, chocolates, cookies, nuts, ice creams, and one of the best selections of non-alcohol beverages. My favorite store for the good selection, top of the line cleanliness, and good customer service. read more

I have never been so utterly dismayed to write a review. I went into this store hoping to buy something refreshing and instead was greeted with contempt, disrespect, and discriminatory scrutiny. I went to look at coffee and Yerba Mate as I needed something caffeinated to help me make it through the night. I usually try to stay away from sugar as much as possible. I pulled a can of the Yerba Mate out of the fridge whereupon the owner came back there and insisted that I don't pull anything out of the fridge to look at it. I asked him why and he wasn't able to supply a valid reason beyond the fact that he didn't want me to do it. When I tried to figure out as to why such a policy was in place when no such signs were placed on the fridge he insisted that I leave the store. Being an African American I'm used to being treated in such a malignant fashion but the insidiousness in which this individual approached me was beyond demeaning and I would suggest that anybody who is a person of color or is allied with people of color never support this business again! read more

This store is great, small but with a surprising variety. The reason for 5 stars, however lies solely in the owner of this place, Abdi (spelling?).
