So let me start off with this, I would not have given them a 5 star rating 4 years ago when I got my braces. I had a lot of problems. People poked me and practically gagged me and didn't care about my mental health problems and how going there triggered them. Every time I went there I was never sure what was going to happen to me and there was always someone new working on my teeth. Before braces I did not mind having work done on my teeth and would enjoy going to the dentist but since my braces I've felt scarred for life. I'm happy to say that now, after my recent visit, things have completely changed. I revisited Karen and her team recently because of a chipped tooth and let me tell you, I am so thankful for them. They were fast, accommodating, and kind. I also noticed staff there that have stuck around over the years. This was the problem I had before when I had braces, there were always new people and no one stayed. I think that this experience was 100x better because they have experienced people working, not all new people. I'm really happy with my teeth and the overall service they provided. My first impression when I called was that the team was an expert in the areas of orthodontia, providing a multitude of service modalities you can access. The young lady I spoke with was very professional, provided me with an appointment sooner than any other office and was able to reassure me that they'd be able to help. I was pleasantly surprised the cost was more than fair. As a college student cost was a determining factor to redo this process; I felt for what they charged me it was reasonable as they allowed me to finance my care and made monthly payments. I knew in that moment that I had to fulfill this goal by partnering up with Dr. McCarthy's team to get back on track. A few words about her Finance team, they were very transparent, understanding and easy to work with. Of course, I'd love to disclose how much I paid for my treatment, however, the reason why I chose not to share this is in part due to unique circumstances. Like healthcare, everybody is unique; meaning my anatomy cannot be generalized. Ultimately, cost wise Dr. McCarthy was affordable, expedient and the results were beyond what I expected ! After doing my research in Sacramento and the Bay Area, I inquired how much other providers would charge me for a consultation to get a new mold done for retainers. I was in disbelief by the outrageous quotes I received for retainers. A provider in Sacramento (Bright Dental) not only quoted me $1,200 for a pair of retainers, but he also went as far as bad-mouthing Dr. McCarthy's office because in his view her office "could not retain staff". After looking tirelessly to avoid having to take the day off of work a drive North, I came to the conclusion that Dr. McCarthy and her team are a gem! I mean this full heartedly as her team always remained consistent, maintained integrity, professionalism and as far as I know being a patient, I did not agree with what the provider said about her or her office. I simply saw this as an uncalled attack because she's an expert in this field and he had a problem with it. To that provider, my suggestion is shut up- and get to her level! I came back to Dr. McCarthy at the end of 2020 without reservations. Dr. McCarthy and her staff accepted me with open arms. It was a feeling I can never let go of as they conveyed nothing but love and interests in my oral health. I am ecstatic but also sad that I have completed my treatment recently, because of Dr. McCarthy, I can confidently smile and share my story as oral health goes long ways for the body and the mind. Dr. McCarthy, from the bottom of my hear thank you and your team for taking care of me these past 5 years or so, it has been a pleasure; you have given me the best gift anyone can ever ask for! For those on the fence: Look if you're on the fence because some of the yelp or google reviews, I hear you. Before you decide to pursue services elsewhere, I highly encourage you to shop around and get the information you need. Not every provider is forthcoming or allows the flexibility this office does. Of course, this is not to say they are perfect, but they definitely are committed to bringing the best out of you in no time! If I were you I would say GO FOR IT get your smile back. Dr McCarthy had a different "plan" in mind than the one she shared with my mother and i. I had two teeth removed-- suddenly i was suppose to get $4000 worth of implants?? NOT what we had discussed. Her RUDE and UNTRAINED employees ALWAYS blew me off every time i called or had an appointment. Upon the removal of my braces, i was not given a permanent retainer like i requested. The plastic retainer that Dr McCarthy charges $100 for was painful and stopped fitting. It got to the point that i could no longer wear the retainer because the teeth i had removed (ie, the large gaps) were causing the rest of my top front teeth to shift dramatically. Thank you Dr McCarthy for making my smile more crooked than every before. read more

Karen and her team did my braces. When I was 16, Karen's team removed my braces. They did not ask my consent, nor my parents, to file my teeth into a straight line, but they did it anyway. I had beautiful, useful, pointy canine teeth, and they filed them totally flat. I was so upset, but didn't know how to have boundaries or communicate that they had done something horrible, unnecessary, and irreversible. I am forever upset with Karen and her team for this policy, and would never recommend them for this reason. Consent is important, even for minors! They also recommended gum removal surgery to expose more of my teeth. Strange, because they looked just fine and, as you age, the gums recede anyway. They have receded, and had I had the surgery, I would now be getting my gums grafted. read more

Don't waste your time. Find somewhere else to go. My son is almost done and can't wait to be done with these rude people, my other 3 kids will be seen anywhere else. They questioned my relationship with my husband(what does that has to do with my sons teeth?). They harassed me on the phone the day I had a c-section about a payment that I always made. Gave me 3 late charges before letting me know they charged me, and a no show fee for accidentally missing an appointment after I paid them off in full. And have to wait 3 more weeks after my sons missed appointment for a total of 7 weeks between appointments. And the Dr hardly even lays her hands on my son every time we go in, all the assistants do all the work. read more

Beautiful new offices. But lobby is awkward. I couldn't tell where to go after entering. Then, once I figured out where/how to sign in, I sat in the lobby where the receptionist is located in such a way that she cannot see what is going on. I'm not sure if she forgot about me, of if the organization/procedure is that inefficient. I was there to pick up retainers that were finished and paid for. I had called ahead to ensure they were ready. I had to wait 50 minutes to be seen for a 25 second consultation. Unacceptable. Between that and the fact that their retainer prices had tripled since we last needed them, I would not recommend this business. read more

I love Dr. McCarthy and her staff! They are very pleasant and upbeat, even when the office is super busy. Everyone is knowledgeable and always personable/down to earth. I am a big chicken when it comes to my teeth, and the staff were always very mindful and caring. I really appreciated that Dr. McCarthy wanted to get my smile perfect and not cut corners with my treatment. Dr. McCarthy has done braces for both of our sons, and it was a very positive experience. Her staff was wonderful, her appointments were very timely, and we are so glad we chose her. She is so very careful and excellent with her care, and a lovely person. She is very detailed and explains things well. Dr. McCarthy was honest, affordable and darn good at getting the job done on fixing my teeth/bite. I had a severe grinding problem caused by a bad dental experience and had ground my lower teeth to the point where I almost needed caps put on. She adjusted my bite, straightened my teeth and brought my smile back to where it should be. Thank you Dr. McCarthy. ** in addendum, she was able to build a set of retainers from an impression made by a previous dentist and stored in a car for 3 months for my son who is in the airforce. Dr. Karen McCarthy and her entire staff were AMAZING during my 2 1/2 year treatment at her Orthodontics office. I literally can't even think of one complaint! Dr. McCarthy is such a perfectionist when it comes to your teeth and your smile, she really does her very best to make sure you get your money's worth and end treatment with the best smile possible! She runs such an organized, prompt, and caring environment, I really enjoyed my appointments every time. You could tell with her staff's awesome attitudes and knowledge that they are treated with respect and kindness, they all seemed to really enjoy their jobs and cared about what they were doing. So I am just going to dive right in by saying Dr. McCarthy is a wonderful orthodontist and MOST of her staff is amazing. Unfortunately there is one bad apple in the bunch. I'm not afraid to name her and that is Tiffany, the office manager. So I have had a couple of children of mine go to Dr. McCarthy and have had nothing but a wonderful experience with her, that is until Tiffany got hired. When she first started in front office she seemed like a very sweet southern girl with a great accent. But the more you got to know her, she became very sour. Then she bumped up to office manager. OH NO! My final child is in treatment at Shasta Orthodontics and I cannot express how relieved I am about that. Not only has my insurance been messed up multiple times by Tiffany, when I talk to her on the phone she is so fake and is very rude. Not only does she have a sour face every time I come in, I've heard her rip right into her employees verbally. Especially one of the blonde gals upfront.( who is newer). First of all that is not ANY WAY to treat anyone period. I don't care how many mistakes you make, you do not talk to people the way Tiffany talks to them. She always walks around like she is the Queen of Shasta Orthodontics. I would be scared to have her as my boss. As a office manager she should be setting the MOST professional atmosphere in the office. Not making everyone scared to be around her. Her employees should feel safe and comfortable around her.(remember I am just a third party here and have witnessed this BS). Dr. McCarthy you should be ashamed and embarrassed to have employed this gal for so long. I know many many families that have multiple children and will refuse to start treatment because of the vibes they received from Tiffany during the consult. One of my very good friends had a consult a few weeks ago and said Tiffany was fake and over the top with her accent that "disappeared" halfway through and then when she went to the next gal for the financial documents, Tiffany didn't say one word and just threw the papers on the desk. How awesome is that? NOT. I hope that this is an eye opener that a patients mom has to complain. No one should be treated the way she treats people. I do not care how "well" she may do her other tasks, the biggest part about being a manager is trust and the way they treat people and patients. Not have a sour face to patients as they come in and to other employees. I give one star to Shasta Orthodontics until we see some changes with the management. If you are well insured or want to pay with your hard earned money, and want good service and results, stay away from this office. Everything that was put in my daughters mouth was either installed wrong and had to be fixed, or ended up breaking and had to be fixed. They will always blame this on the patient, and if you are all paid on your account they will try and charge you additional money when your retainers or permanent appliances break. Furthermore, if you ask why you are being charged to fix their mistake, Dr. McCarthy will personally and unprofessionally, yell at you and blame you for her terrible/cheap dentistry. We will replace the appliance at a different doctors office where they guarantee their work and are more accomodating to their patients. I am also, going to have them check my daughters bite as I now question that as well (considering her assistants do most of the work). This office is the equivalent of getting your hair done at a beauty college, where everyone is still learning. I recommend spending your money elsewhere. read more
