Went here a couple of months back during their Boo Bash weekend festival. We enjoyed a few hours…read morethere to do some pumpkin picking, hay rides, and the rest of the usual activities. They have several food trucks with lots of different choices. They have a nice farmer's market that is nicely decorated and has plenty of items for sale. They have a great selection of pies too. Also, there is an ice cream stand next to the market opened daily, all ice cream is homemade and fresh! Their hot apple cider and cinnamon donut was a great treat! Since finding Ort Farms is not too far from us, we'll be back next year once the crops are back in season.

I found out about Ort Farms from a billboard I saw driving down 17. I wanted to find a farm that…read morehad a pumpkin patch but still had apple picking, and Ort Farms had both - so it was perfect! It was about an hour drive from me, so it wasn't too bad. We came on the last Sunday of September, so the pumpkin patch and hayrides were already open (I believe they open mid-September) but they still had some late varieties of apples. They had some veggies available for picking too - tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. You just need to purchase a bag and you can use it for both. Admission was about $15 per adult, which you have to purchase online. Kids 3 and under are free. We did the 9:30 time slot but didn't get there until 10, which didn't seem to be an issue. It's definitely best to go early so you can avoid as much of the crowd as possible. We spent almost three hours there and it was crowded by the time we left. The good thing about going in September is that most people don't want to go until October, so you get to avoid that mess. But the bad thing is that it's still probably really hot and if you're picking fruits/veggies in hot weather, it's not the most fun. By the time we were done picking apples and veggies, we were all hot and tired by the time we got to the pumpkin patch. So I'd suggest doing all of your photo ops at the pumpkin patch first and then doing all the manual labor. They have a few food trucks in one area and the apple cider slush was nice and refreshing after picking fruit. They also have a farm store with your usual suspects - pies, apple cider donuts, pre-made salads/sandwiches, etc., but we didn't buy anything. I think I found our new go-to farm. It's nice that you can kill two birds with one stone. I saw they have U-cut Christmas trees in December so I'm interested to see if they're doing any Christmas events - I wouldn't mind making the drive back.

After researching several options with a mind toward reasonable entrance fees and fair prices per unit, Melick's was where we landed. At $5.99 per person for weekend pricing (which includes a free hayride to the furthest points of the orchard) at peak picking season, I felt it was worth the longer drive to get there. I also loved that they issued free plastic picking bags without the added cost, as many orchards are now wont to do. In late September, there were plenty of apples ripe for the picking, with clear signage to denote which types were ripe. Honeycrisp apples were a little more per pound, but once I tasted a few, it was clear why. True to its name, I've never bit into a more juicier or crunchier apple, and I've been spoiled for supermarket apples for good. Most folks seem to come for the apples, but I saw a fair number of people coming down from the fields with armloads of giant sunflowers. Of course, there's always the store at the front, with other farm-fresh produce, cider (both alcoholic and non), and baked goodies. The alcoholic apple cider was refreshing, with a light buzz that made time in the orchard just a little happier. No bags or backpacks are allowed in the orchard area, but there's a small picnic area with some tables and porta-potties at the very front. Our family came prepared with picnic blankets, and the folks here were totally fine with us setting up by the goats (who are fenced in, so there's no direct interaction but the children in our group had great fun watching them while we ate). Melick may not have all the frills and fancy fun of other orchards, but I was delighted by a few perks, like a small tire play area and a decently sized corn maze that was fun to walk through with the family. The parking lot doesn't seem all that large, but when we went, it never seemed to get so busy that it was impossible to find a spot.

But once I actually went in person, everyone there was super friendly and welcoming! The apples were fantastic -- fresh, juicy, and reasonably priced. They even have sunflower picking, which was really cute (a little scary with all the bees, but manageable!). Definitely worth visiting once the season starts -- just maybe skip calling ahead

After checking out the plants and garden items outdoors, we decided to go inside to look at the produce and merchandise located in the shop. My husband loves cherries, and I thought we might purchase one of the two remaining pints that was all they had. Unfortunately I saw that several cherries were moldy on the top of both pints. I pointed it out to the lady working there, who said that she just sorted them that morning and didn't notice any problems. I then walked over to the tomatoes, a favorite of mine, and picked up several which was also moldy on the stems!! Obviously they are still trying to sell older fruits and vegetables and didn't have the turnover when fresh. The only thing I knew couldn't spoil was the flavored honey sticks, and I purchased three for a dollar. Quite a disappointment and we won't visit them again.

I could have taken a gallon on the road with me, but not sure how that would have kept. So I looked around and went with a fresh-baked cinnamon roll and some fresh-made scrapple. Yup. They make scrapple here. That's pretty cool. Not cool? I asked for a half pound. I got closer to a pound. The lady (owner?) gave me a blank look when I asked for less. Because she couldn't mold it back into the loaf or something. I ended up going with it but she should have accommodated and given me what I asked for. Scrapple was the best you'll find this far out of scrapple country. Roll was delicious. My friend enjoyed his homemade pumpkin crumb cake. Other products, I wouldn't bother. A lot of their branded products are overpriced. I asked about their (homemade?) pecans and she said "price is on the bottom of each jar". Actually, a lot of jars were missing the price. So we've got some consistency issues here. I would classify this as a boutique market, a nice little stop if you have a craving, but I wouldn't make this a regular stop. (Sadly, if only they kept up with their cider doughnuts through midday, my review may have ended differently.)
