BUSINESS CLOSED. Drove over an hour...

We drove over an hour to get there only to find out that the business is closed and has been. Page should be updated.

I have visited each of Connecticut's 169 towns, and never, EVER, did I come across anything with any resemblance to the Valley Tavern. More likely to be found in the North Woods of Maine or the Upper Peninsula than Connecticut, this old house with an old bar has been serving up since the Sharon Valley Iron Furnace served up Ore. Well, actually it used to be the office for the Iron Company, but Im sure people be gettin drunk while using that abacus! Its a miracle that places like this still exist. Wood floor, dog running around, hours on the door state "3 PM or whenever Ill get there soon I promise!" The blonde gal bartender was efficient and made her rounds, collecting jukebox money and matching what she collected with her own money. "Its oneadem fancy jukeboxes, its two credits for the good stuff"- said a flannel non-hipster, very non-hipster Sharonite. I like the old stuff, country stuff, and soon blared an obscure Lynyrd Skynyrd song off of the "Nuthin' Special" release. "you wanna nother one"? she asked, Nah, just one and run, gotta Make it to Sheffield in 40 minutes. Be back though.

I am thrilled to have finally had the opportunity! The feel of the place is precisely what you would imagine in Kent. Traditional old-style dark wood, a sense of community, perfect decor to harken back to the days of stage coaches and taverns being the center of a town's social scene. Service was excellent. We never wanted for anything - but yet were not bombarded or crowded in the quaint dining room setting. The best and most important part of our meal was - well - the food. The menu is suitable for literally any dietary need without compromising their spin on elevated tavern/comfort food. Ample appetizers, interesting salads, tacos, meat/non-meat and even vegan options abound - all with terrific portion size and execution. Our entire group was pleased (and some are persnickety). Very much looking forward to returning and grateful they are in our great town.

A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.

They offer an authentic…read moreBritish gastropub experience with traditional food like Fish & Chips, Scotch Eggs, and Shepherd's Pie, alongside cocktails and ales, in a setting that often features live music. It's known for its unique atmosphere, popular dishes, and is a good spot for groups, with happy hour specials available. The pub operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is a popular new addition to the local scene.  For my first drink, I'm having the Bramble on Rose. This is made with Bombay Gin, fresh lemon, rise water and blackberry syrup. It's their take on a 1980's classic crested in SoHo London. For info on its history, go to: https://www.diffordsguide.com/encyclopedia/1655/cocktails/bramble-cocktail-its-inception-told-by-its-creator. It's served in a 16oz glass so it gets a bit diluted. Still, I like the taste. I am starting with their Soup of the Day which is the cream of chicken/mushroom. This is hot and delicious! That's a big spoon. I'm also having a side Caesar Salad (light on the croutons). This is just right! It tastes great! For my entree, I'm having the Mandu's Masala made with sautéed chicken, tomato, mild or spicy (spicy, as hot as possible) curry sauce in a yogurt cream sauce served with Basmati rice and grilled naan bread. This is considers the UL's national dish! This is nice and spicy! That's a lot of food! I loved the cute, little pieces of naan. The sauce is thick! I love it! For my next drink, I'm having the House Cup. This is a traditional British cocktail well known for its herbaceous and referring taste. It is made with Pimm's No. 1 Liqueur, fresh lemon, mint and seasonal fruit. This is well garnished and tastes great! For dessert, we are trying the Panna cotta. Panna cotta ('cooked cream') is an Italian dessert made with sweetened cream thickened with gelatin and moulded. It may be flavoured with coffee, vanilla, or other flavours. Wow! This is great! What a great meal here!

Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right downtown Manchester on Main Street is this gem where Lucky Taco once stood. It echoes the standard British pubs and taverns from across the pond with deep yellow lighting, woods, exposed brick walls and open floorplan kind of vibe. It was lively, energetic and welcoming! Service: Lara took excellent care of us and she was very helpful! I had no issues at all. Food/Drinks: On the table when we arrived was an Irn Bru which is a SUPER popular drink sold in Scotland, often beating Coca-Cola in sales. It tasted like orange licorice, but it was actually pretty decent. Our first appetizer was an order of Crisps which were like thick cut potato chips with some garlic parmesan seasonings which I actually enjoyed! There was plenty of flavor from each component involved. Next up was the 007 which was their spin on the martini James Bond orders! In it is Wheatley Vodka, Bombay Gin, and English Tea Infused Lillet Blanc. It tasted like a dirty martini and was pretty strong! Smooth as well. I enjoyed it. Next up was a dish called Toad In The Hole which is Yorkshire pudding stuffed with smoked sausage then topped with caramelized onions and gravy. I have never seen anything like this before, but it was so strange, but pretty decent! The Yorkshire pudding was a bit eggy and dense. The gravy was a must though, since the other components of the dish lacked the salt that I was seeking. Next up was the Cloth Of Gold Old which is an Old Fashion with a twist which contained Old Forester, fresh lemon and honey. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure why the mention of Old Fashion was on the menu unless this is supposed to differ from an "Old Fashioned". No matter, moving on. Next up were the Potato Pom Pom which are fired potato balls served with a house-made cheddar cheese sauce. It sounds like a simple dish. The cheese was thick, majorly cheddar-y. I really, really liked these! They tasted like a fancy tater tot. The potato inside was so soft and tender and the exterior was so crispy. My last drink of the night was the Bramble On Rose which is their take on a 1980's classic created in Soho, London. In it is Bombay Gin, fresh lemon, rose water and blackberry syrup. This was my favorite drink of the night. It was fresh, had some herbal flavors and the rose flavor made itself known. I really, really liked this drink and would certainly order it again. Lastly, the quintessential Fish & Chips! It's Atlantic cod in a brown ale batter, served with musky peas, chips, tartar sauce and a curry sauce. The curry sauce was surprisingly fantastic. I was blown away and absolutely needed more of it. The mushy peas resembled guacamole, but I had no idea how I was supposed to eat them. Lol. Were they a sauce? I don't know, but they tasted exactly how you'd think they'd taste. The fish was also fantastic. It was light, yet greasy and crispy. Value: The most expensive thing on the menu is $22.00. This place is not expensive at all so you certainly won't break the bank. Portions are decent size too. In conclusion, I absolutely enjoyed myself here and highly recommend you (reading this) to check it out! British food is... unpredictable if I must throw a word on it. Lol. Like, I almost couldn't predict what some of this stuff would taste like because I had never had anything like it before! Now, I'm a believer!
