I couldn't have asked for a better orthopedic surgeon. I had to get my severely damaged shoulder fixed and Dr. Shapiro was great. I had to have a bad experience with a different surgeon that eventually lead me to go to Dr. Shapiro and I couldn't be happier. He has a GREAT bed side manner and he's a great surgeon. He showed me pictures of the inside of my shoulder, the before and after and explained what he fixed. He actually answers questions and is likable as well as a top notch surgeon. I'm happy to say that 1 year later I have 100% mobility in my shoulder after 10 years of not being able to raise it more than halfway without it dislocating. My partial knee replacement surgery by Dr. Shapiro required revision surgery due to an improperly positioned implant. About four months after surgery my knee was swelling and very painful. After two additional visits, Dr. Shapiro ordered both x-rays and an MRI and still failed to identify the cause or provide an explanation. I located a new surgeon and upon the very first meeting my new surgeon took a simple x-ray and immediately observed incorrect positioning of the implant (this was thoroughly documented in my new surgeon's operative report). My new surgeon also stated that I was never a good candidate for partial knee replacement surgery as other parts of my knee were on the verge of wearing out as well. read more

Dr. Shapiro came highly recommended to me by 2 different sources as the best local sports med orthopedic surgeon for a torn ACL. He is quick, confident, and straight to the point. But he explained my situation to me, the surgical options (with his recommendation), and gave me confidence that the surgical fix + committed PT would get me back to normal in no time. I'm guessing some people might find his style abrupt or short. But I appreciate his no nonsense style and confidence. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Have been back for 2 unrelated issues in the decade since my ACL surgery, & referred Dr. Shapiro to 2 friends. Great experiences and results each time. read more

Dr. Shapiro performed my median meniscus knee surgery. He was quick and impatient with my question during my consultation. After performing surgery he spoke to my companion who was driving me home. He was short and seemed bothered in speaking with them. I had questions that I wanted to ask the doctor after my procedure to ask how the procedure went and if a repair or removal of the tissue was performed. He did not come to my room to discuss but abruptly discussed it over the phone while I was still in the hospital because he was too busy. I was then prescribed a narcotic pain medicine if needed for later use. I was not told that it would be best to get the Rx filled at the hospital pharmacy. I was unable to get it filled at my local CVS and Rite Aid. I went round and round with his office staff to try to get a replacement Rx like Tylenol with codeine. Several frustrating phone calls and two hours later, I am still waiting for a resolution. I would not recommend him or Beaumont due to this terrible experience. read more

This office , staff and surgeon are on top of their game. I am practicing dentist and will walk out if i am mistreated. The surgeon performed a total knee replacement. Shapiro performed well, now its rehab time. I walked out of H.F. Trying to perform non-surgical care. A total waste of time. My situation was hopeless having three compartments destroyed out of four. A young man presented at my house right after surgery for pt. Anthony, informed me that he has his own clinic at the Lakes Medical building on Haggerty. Its called"Team Rehab",I was very impressed with his care and his desire to get me moving. I would only go if he assured me that he performs pt on me. I know a good practioner from a clock watcher. Tony is as impressive as Shapiro. I would highly recommend both. Skip the corporate clinics. His clinic is very laid back with a totally cheerful caring staff. On a segue, this guy did three tours in Iraq, and was blown out of a Humvee, and he is still happy. I would need depends just to be on a base camp. I have already recommended my dear friends. On posts, most people will vent bad results because they expected their injuries to be cured like magic. The body heals different for each person. This guy, Shapiro does not deserve bad reviews, just my two scents. On a segue, i perform quite a bit of oral surgery myself. I would refer any family member to Shapiro , Also, this guy is a stranger to me. My radiologist recommended Shapiro and a dear friend. This is not some plug. Just trying to help vulnerable people navigate a very scary path. This has been no fun.if your surgeon misaligns your plate, or severs ligaments, or fits the wrong size, u r screwed. read more

Poor bedside manner and does not explain procedures. Acted annoyed when I asked what exactly he did during knee surgery. Did not return calls when the pain medicine prescription he wrote could not be filled and wasn't carried by 3 local pharmacies. Apparently it's one known to rebate doctors. Be wary of this surgeon. read more

I went to Dr. Shapiro due to a knee injury in Jan. 2017. He did an x ray & said it was arthritis & put me on Meloxican for 2 weeks (which did nothing). I went back to Dr. Shapiro & told him I felt like the extreme pain was more soft tissue than bone, so he sent me for an MRI (which I had to suggest) where it was discovered that I had a torn meniscus. During the follow up visit, Dr. Shapiro gave me two options - one was to repair the meniscus & come in every couple months to have injections in my knee, the other option was to have a partial knee replacement. He told me that only 5% of people are eligible for a partial knee replacement so I was lucky because partial's were not as severe as a full knee replacement & the recovery time was much shorter (12 weeks). I was very unsure of what choice to make & asked him multiple times what I should do & he said he could not tell me (which I understand, but I think he should have at least given me his professional recommendation). I told him that injections in my knee didn't sound like a long term solution & asked if I would eventually need surgery, in which he replied "yes" so I chose to have the surgery to eliminate long term injections, (& inevitably end up having this surgery anyway). Dr. Shapiro performed a partial knee replacement in March, 2017. I stayed over night at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. I never saw Dr. Shapiro after the surgery. Another doctor came in the next morning to change the incision dressing & gave me instruction on wound care & said he was going to sign release papers. He told me to NOT start physical therapy for 2 weeks because of some unusual pain I was having. A short while after he left, the nurse came in & asked if I had seen my doctor.. I told her that the surgeon had sent an associate; she looked confused & asked his name. She stated that she didn't know who this person was so left the room to check to see if my release papers were signed or if he made any case notes on the computer... nothing was found. She could not reach Dr. Shapiro, so she made some other phone calls & found out that the "associate" was not affiliated with Dr. Shapiro's practice, nor was he a practicing physician at Beaumont at all.. he simply sat in on my surgery as an OBSERVER! During PT I kept complaining that it felt like "shards of glass" every time I would bend my knee, especially with any kind of weight bearing. The PT's were a bit perplexed & said they had never heard of anyone describe pain in that manner. I believe I wasn't able to make good progress because of this pain. I completed 11 weeks of PT, three days per week, successful in the range of motion but not in strength or bringing back the quad muscle. 13 weeks post op, I had my "final" follow up visit with Dr. Shapiro. He was surprised at the amount of swelling I still had, so he put me back on Meloxican (which again, did nothing) & told me to come back in 3 months. I returned about 2.5 months later because I did not feel I was making the progress I should have been I was still having the sharp "glass" like pain. He did x rays & said they looked good but "something was wrong". He suggested going back into the knee arthroscopically to "clean things up". I decided to get a second opinion, so I made appointments with 2 different surgeons... They both said they did not feel a scope would do any good, as it appears the outside of my knee cap is rubbing against the metal prosthetic (which they both determined from x rays they took, even though Dr. Shapiro said the x rays looked fine). Both surgeons said they would have never done this surgery on me & would have directed me to repair the meniscus & see what happened from there. A couple weeks later, I made an appointment with another surgeon for yet another opinion. He asked if I had gone through any type of drug or physical therapy prior to surgery & when I told him "no" he said "No one in their right mind should have done this surgery on you without long term therapy of some type". He also feels that if I were to have another surgery, it would only give me a 50% chance of taking care of the problem. He, prescribed a knee brace & sent me back to physical therapy. Eight months later, I am continuing to try to regain my quad strength, but the pain is always there. I will never have my normal active life back. I will never run, jump, kick a ball, squat... the list goes on. In short, Dr. Shapiro performed major knee surgery on me when only a minor meniscus repair would have solved my issue. I take partial blame for not getting a second opinion PRIOR to the surgery, but I have never had surgery & assumed I could trust MY surgeon. Please steer clear of this surgeon! read more
