History
Established in 2020.
When the pandemic began, our founder, Dennis, was aware that the world was changing again and that it was time to evolve and adapt. In 2020, he decided to fulfill a lifelong ambition of his and launched SHAPEUP Contracting. The term "get workers" (SHAPEUP), an old union term, describes what contracting is all about. It also means "to be better," which our business strives to do.
The main goal of SHAPEUP Contracting is to improve every homeowner's, subcontractor's, and employee's experience with contracting. Integrity, honesty, and prioritizing your needs are values we hold dear. We want to make sure we're creating a home you will love!
Meet the Business Owner: Dennis B.
Hi, my name is Dennis. I have had a lifelong passion for carpentry and construction. Originally from Sunnyside, Queens, I joined the NYC Carpenters Union (Local 157) when I was 18. I knew it was what I always wanted to do. While my friends went off to college, all the older guys in my neighborhood and on the job (besides my father) taught me what it means to be a carpenter, a union worker, and a man.
After so much was lost on 9/11, they encouraged me to buy my place, which I did at 24 years old in Long Beach, LI, in 2002. I renovated it myself and then started to work with friends on other residential construction projects. After Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, I returned to my house with my twin brother to assess the damage. My home and the rest of the neighborhood were completely destroyed. I looked at him and told him it was okay; I would rebuild. During the pandemic, I decided to make good on my dream of starting a construction company and opened SHAPEUP Contracting in 2020.
