I have been here twice,first time it was good the second time it wasn't as good as the first time and I felt like I got sick from the food after our second visit. On our last visit the restaurant was pretty empty with probably only one more couple eating there. The service is ok ,the food didn't taste as good as our previous visit but they do have a nice ambiance and some days they have a live band. As of May 2026,this business is closing. Also this business has been on the news many times claiming it was closing or struggling to stay open. The taste of the overused fryer grease really comes through with an overpoweringly heavy punch to the guts with the chicken wings and fries. Even the fish was mushy and greasy tasting as well, yet it managed to hold the disturbingly present background texture and taste of being freezer burnt meat. This place came highly recommended by one of my clients. I decided to visit today. Ordered fried fish. Was asked how many pieces after the gentleman that took my order said I could get 2,3,5...I said 3. I also ordered fried chicken for my daughter, a three piece dark, Mac n cheese and collard greens. Got my food to go and left only to open the container when I got home to see fish strips or fish bites it definitely was not three pieces of fish I ordered. What can I say, this place is open till 4 AM on the weekends and that is crazy but wonderful! Came here late at night and ordered a burger and a fried chicken meal with sides and have to say that it was absolutely phenomenal with lots of flavor. The fried chicken was nicely crisp and the skin and batter had a wonderful seasoning flavor. The burger was ample and had a light soy sauce flavor so it was very delicious and definitely not lacking in seasoning. I got the Jamaican meat patty as a side and also their mac & cheese, which is that traditional southern style with a little cheese crust on top. We've been here a few times over the past 4 years, but our most recent trip was the best yet. We typically go around 3-4pm, and get our food to go. This time, we arrived about 630 and decided to stick around and enjoy our meals. They had live music, we got to talk to so many locals, and we had a good time just mingling inside. The best thing about this place is the fried chicken. ITS TO DIE FOR, and I always want to order more to go. (And you can do like a 20 piece of you don't mind the wait). I've been wanting to try Shantell's for some time now and I was able to go there yesterday with a friend. We decided to go after lunch rush so it was 1pm when we showed up. Only 3 other tables were being occupied (one couple was paying, the other two tables were already eating). We both are thinking ok this is a good sign we missed the busiest time for the day. The host/waitress told us to sit wherever we liked and so we did. She took our drink order and after a few moments of trying to decide we both ordered the meatloaf since it was Monday and it was the special of the day. My order was meatloaf with rice and collard greens (the waitress said they were the best), my friend ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and collard greens. The place wasn't busy were we the only 2 people who needed to order. It took approximately 15 mins to get our food. The plate looked good coming out until I took the first bite. The meatloaf was BURNT on the other side of it. Whoever cooked it decided it would be ok to put the best side of the meatloaf facing up with hope of the rice THAT WAS COLD, lack of flavor soften up the burnt side of the meatloaf. It was still crunchy, hard and nasty. The collard greens taste as if they were out of a can because it had a metal tin taste. No cornbread was offered or given but at that point it was too late I was DONE with the meatloaf and this place. read more

We arrived at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon. I couldn't figure out the ambiance of the place. There's a lot going on in the location. It took forever to get menus. They're paper menus. They were out of collards and hummingbird cake. It took our food forever to come. It took so long that my boyfriend wanted to ask for dessert while we were still waiting on our food because he didn't want to risk the cake taking so long. We got our food and it was not hot. He ordered the chicken and waffle and I got the 2 piece fish and 2 sides. The food was not cold but it also wasn't even warm. It was like room temperature, which I don't understand. The fish is like fiber nuggets or fish fingers and not filet. I was expecting filets. The macaroni and cheese was nasty. The yams were overly sweet however I would try those again. Shantell's is very good! I have been here a few times. I usually just drop by to sit outside and order the beef patties which are some of the best I have ever had. They are hot, tasty and not overly breaded. It's comes with this sauce that just compliments the already perfect patties. I came here for brunch and had shrimp and grits. It was amazing. Soft, creamy and most importantly tasty! This place does not disappoint. The food is fresh and good quality. The wait staff can be a little confused at times but very nice and considerate. The food is worth having the patience. The only disservice is that I have not tried all the other things on the menu. They have fried chicken, fish and other meals I look forward to trying. Shantell's Serves up some of the best local home-style Southern cuisine found in Sanford. I have been to Shantell's for breakfast on several occasions but never for dinner. A few friends and I stopped in last Saturday night around 10:00 pm and were delighted to find the restaurant serves food until 4:00 am! (Friday and Saturday) Wow, no one does that in downtown Sanford. Another thing no one does in Sanford is BYOB, but you can do that here too! I ordered the 2-piece fish with 2 sides ($13) and the Tiger Woods Tea ($2.60). Our food was ready in about 15-minutes, and everything was freshly cooked. I was expecting two whole pieces of catfish but received fried nuggets instead. Regardless, decent-sized chunks of fish were cooked to perfection in a light crispy batter. The Fried Okra and Mac & Cheese were also delicious and complemented the dish nicely. The Tiger Woods tea was refreshing, lightly sweetened, and had a natural peach flavor; very tasty if you love a good sweet tea. My friend ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles and stated that the chicken was better than the infamous Eastside Fish Fry in Lansing, Michigan. This says a lot for Shantell's recipe, especially since Eastside Fish Fry is Guy Fieri Approved! A DJ was playing when we arrived, and the music continued throughout our meal. Although it was fun interacting with the DJ and other customers while dining inside, it would have been wise to eat outside then come in to enjoy the music. Our Server, Saleema, was so friendly, attentive, and helpful. Saleema helped make the evening memorable for my friends. I highly recommend requesting her if you decide to dine at Shantell's. I will be stopping back into Shantell's soon. After getting caught up to speed on the whole East Side Fish Fry comparison, I definitely need to return to try it for myself. Let me start by saying, I was so excited to come here and support a black owned business with great reviews. We were visiting from Manhattan and wanted to find a great place to eat. It was supposed to be Open Mic night (Friday) and we arrived to find a desolate and totally empty restaurant. We were seated outside and figured, who cares... the food could be great. I ordered a glass of white wine and we ordered the fried green tomatoes as a starter. My wine arrived and was warm, as in its never been chilled or refrigerated. It was also old and seemed like it came from an open bottle that sat waaaay to long. I think I was able to get a few sips down. As for mains, my partner ordered fried catfish w/mac & cheese and greens. I ordered the 2 piece fried chicken with Mac & cheese and mashed potatoes/gravy. We also ordered a side of cornbread (which never came, yet we were charged for). The fried green tomato's were so salty it was hard to eat and the tomatoes were ripening so they were red and mushy. Our mains arrived and to our disappointment it was inedible. My fried chicken was totally bland, the Mac & cheese seemed like processed/powder cheese. It was awful and still haunts me almost a week later. The mashed potatoes were equally dismal and also tasted like instant mash. My partners fish were actually nuggets (he didn't know that before ordering) and it seemed they used the same salty cornmeal batter as the fried green tomatoes. He couldn't eat more than 1 and shared my view on the sides. We asked for the check and no one, NO ONE questioned why we wanted to leave within minutes of receiving our food. We paid and walked to a brewery on the corner to have a second dinner. My son recently brought up the idea of wanting to try "real" southern food. Not fast-food quality/grocery store stuff - honest to goodness true southern food. My research brought me to Shantell's Just Until. And I am grateful. First we walk in and are immediately greeted by (I must assume) Shantell herself. She welcomed us with a big smile and invited us to sit wherever. During our entire time there, she was talking to another couple of ladies who were there first. They seemed like family or old friends. That homey feeling added to the dinner. I'm not sure what the building was used for before Shantell and her family moved in, but it felt like an old house had been converted into a restaurant-on one side- and a deli/bakery on the other. Immediately after sitting, we were greeted by a nice young man eager to get us fed. I apologize for not catching his name, but he was great. Their choices of drink; iced tea or lemonade. That's it. They said they didn't have soda. I found that a little odd. Not even cans? But it didn't matter because we were there for genuine home cooking! So lemonade it was! The lemonade was an interesting twist from what I've ever had. It tasted more like a creamsicle than a glass of Country Time. Not that sweet really. Nothing wrong with that. Our food came out- My son tried the Jerk Chicken Philly. It was absolutely steaming fresh when he was handed it. He tried his darndest to hold it, but it just stayed too hot. He did his best, and eventually resorted to eating the chicken with his fork. The Philly part was great, a little bit of spice and had a great 'chili' type flavor. I ordered a 2pc chicken with a side of mac and cheese and biscuit. Oh my. The biscuit was buttery and toasted and was absolutely freshly homemade. Be warned tho, eat it quickly because if you don't, it became a little tough to bite off. The Mac and cheese- I can't think of any place where I have had it better. Nice and creamy and cheesy and perfectly cooked. The chicken. Ooooooh that chicken. I definitely need to get like a full bucket from Shantell. That breading. I will dream of that crispy, flaky breading forever. If the breading were offered as a side, I'd probably take it. So dang good. The boy then ordered a piece of pineapple upside down cake and I believe finished it before we got home? He also ordered, for lunch the next day, a beef patty. I checked in today and he loved it. Saw this restaurant on TikTok. Food looked delicious so I decided to drive an hour over to Sanford. The restaurant was nice and clean. There was a reggae band playing as well. But the food was awful. We went on a Friday night and it was only two other couples in there and when I tasted the food I was even more shocked! The beef Pattie's were so good I had to order another order. The fried green tomatoes were good as well. We also ordered the wings, can't remember the flavor but it was kind of like a Carolina sauce. They were very welled seasoned, only thing is they were not fried hard enough for us. But definitely didn't lack flavor.
