We love getting the lunch special 7 days a week before 4:00. You get a main entrée, rice (fried or white), eggrolls and a cup of soup for about $10.00. M-F some apps are half price and they also have drink specials. We go mostly for the food, but we love the comfortable booths and the evening sunset views. The staff: today's staff seemed like it was a bunch of high school students that only cared about flirting and acting cool. On another occasion the staff were arguing and one even stormed out- a live show... But most of the time, we normally get one server that works her tail off to be sure that all diners are happy. I miss that server. Oh, the tea. We order a kettle of hot tea for the table, so we were charged per person drinking from that kettle, but we only ordered one kettle. We should be charged per kettle or if two people are drinking from the kettle, then we should each get our own...I didn't understand their money hungry logic. Oh yea, I paid 3.00 for a kids drink! Say what??? I still give it 4 stars because even with these minor incidents, we still enjoy our visit. Next time I will investigate the tea, because spending 5.50 for hot tea is a bit steep. read more

I'm Chinese. I like Chinese food and I eat it all the time. Coming from this background, I'm a little bit pickier about Chinese restaurants that I go to. But, I've come to Shanghai Chinese a couple of times. And I haven't been really impressed with either of the times I went. But, Shanghai is a quick place to go in Lake Jackson if you are craving Chinese take-out food. This place is probably better than the Panda Express that we have in Lake Jackson. When I've come here, I've ordered the Lettuce Wraps and the Singaporean Noodles. I thought the lettuce wraps were fine. But, I wished they had included more lettuce with the meal. I felt like I had to force a ton of filling onto one lettuce wrap so that I wouldn't run out. The filling was pretty average, but I was satisfied. I didn't like the Singaporean Noodles. They were a little too greasy for my taste. One thing I did like about this place was the eggrolls. They tasted good. I think that the lunch pricing is fair. If you want to have crispy noodles to add to your soup, you can request it for no extra charge. That is one tip that I've learned while coming to this place. read more

My mother in law absolutely loves this place. For me, It's just okay. What i do clearly remember that I do not like the orange chicken. My son ordered chicken nuggets. The orange chicken is just the chicken nuggets with an orange sauce on it. It was not even enough to cover the whole "nugget." By the way, my son can eat any chicken nugget. except for this one. To say that I am an Asian food fan is to use the word in its full meaning. I am a fanatic for Asian food of all types. That being said let's get one thing straight. I have been to China, and Japan, tasted the local cuisine and while it is good, very little of it would last long on the menu in the US. I don't know what happened to the reviewers who have given this place some bad scores but I have not had one bad experience the 3 times i have eaten here. This place is hands down the best restaurant in Clute for four reasons. The food is fast and freshly made, the business is clean and inviting with attention paid to the ambiance inside and out, it's not a chain restaurant, and not only do they not serve mac & cheese, they wouldn't call it a vegetable even if they did. The menu offers many appetizers among which the Vietnamese Spring Rolls (comes with an absolutely perfect peanut dipping sauce) are my favorite, but you can never go wring with some lettuce wraps or the General Tso's Hot Wings. So far I have had the General Tso's BEEF (never had it with beef before) which was awesome. The beef was thin sliced, battered, sauced and cooked in a pan until it was crispy again. I have also had the take out staple Singapore Noodles with beef and chicken. Again this dish was extremely flavorful, the meat was tender and moist, and the noodles were perfectly al dente. Just today for lunch I had the Moo Shu Beef with black mushrooms, wood ears, bamboo shoots and cabbage. It came with what seemed to be homemade pancakes and a wonderful hoisin sauce. The sauce was a little sweet for my taste but it was really good. The rice is sticky and no hint of overcooking and although it would benefit from a little salt in the water, it is prepared expertly. The prices are reasonable and the dine in bar is well stocked and even boasts a happy hour with rotating drink selections on sale. *Edit: 10/13/2013------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's very possible that my over sauced lunch today was my fault but then again every cook needs to learn how to adapt to a customers wishes. When I got my order it was slopped with sauce. Everything still tasted good and the waitress asked me if I had ever ordered it that way before. My wife and I were looking for good Asian place in Lake Jackson since we are fairly new to the area. Other place we have tried is "Taste of nations". We heard good things about the "Shanghai Egg Rolls" here and we were definitely not disappointed, they were great, we thought. Food was very tasty, on time, and we thought the price was very reasonably. Establishment gets 4 stars due to my steamed rice coming out cold with food, it was corrected and I was satisfied. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good eat, other than egg rolls, the experience was good but not mind blowing, I think a good standard Asian restaurant, I've started to limit my expectations on how great food can be around lake Jackson when it comes to anything other than seafood. Honestly, I've been going here for years. And it's usually been good. But tonight, on my 13th anniversary, the service was just atrocious. We ordered a "family dinner", and what was brought out was a small plate of the food. It was the same size as the single order that you pay less for. I'm sorry, but a "family dinner" should come with more food than can feed one person. Not to mention, we had to ask 3 times for peanut sauce, 5 times for napkins, and twice for oil-based hot sauce. We were also never given refills or even asked about refills until our waitress brought our check. If the place was busy, I'd understand. But honestly, they were not. There were 3 other tables beside us. On top of that, the waitress brought our food out, and THEN asked "Did I give you your soups/salads?" No, you didn't. Then she brought out the soups/salads, and asked "Did I give you your eggrolls?" No, you didn't. We dug into our "family" meal, and it was luke warm. There was no heat to it. Even the dish, which was supposed to spicy, had no spice to it. I just don't understand it. My husband ordered Kung Pao Chicken, which is supposed to be spicy and there was no heat and hardly any chicken, mostly carrots and water chestnuts. I went to Shanghai for the 1st time this week at dinner time. It was a fantastic experience all around. Food came out fast, hot, and very tasty. The waitress was positively wonderful and extremely attentive. Even offered me ways to lower my total bill and made sure I had a "to go" cup of my Dr. Pepper to take with me. I decided to go again today for lunch due to such a good experience previously. Today.. was a totally different experience. HORRIBLE! I think I had the worst waitress they employ, food delivery time was excessively long, and the main entree' was lukewarm at best. One bright spot, the wonton soup was very hot and delicious which is the only good thing about the experience today. The waitress was hideous with her customer service.. I was by myself (side note: both times I've been here I was "party of one") and I think she had only one other table..of a mere 2 people. In the midst of this, the other waitress that was working had 10+ tables, busting her hump in making sure her tables were happy .. all while asking MY waitress if she needed any help. My husband and I went there for lunch today and we were pleasantly surprised. We were looking for a non buffet Chinese restaurant and we found this place. First and foremost, the outside of the building certainly does not reflect what was offered inside. The building itself could use a facelift, but the food, oooh the food! It was ECCELLENT! We walked through the doors and were hit with delicious smells that made us immediately hungry. We were seated quickly in what appeared to be mostly booth seating through out (very comfy and intimate). The tea was fresh, which is a first test passed. We looked at the menu and noticed a variety of items at very reasonable prices. I have never had such succulent and perfectly crisp egg/spring rolls. We both had hot and sour soup. To further my surprise, the tofu in the soup was firm and nutty (instead of the typical soft, tasteless, gel that passes for tofu in most buffet style soups). The seasoning of the soup broth itself was perfect. I noticed some of the other patron's dishes being served and was very impressed by the presentation and portions of the food. The General Tso"s chicken was rich and flavorful and went perfectly with the fresh prepared hot mustard. The rice was sticky and fluffy, as is best if using chop sticks to eat (not greasy and dry as is typical at buffets). The service was fast and friendly, although we were given so much attention, we were confused as to who would receive the tip. The frames between receiving our drinks, soup and entre were precise and well timed. We only had an hour for lunch break, so we were pleased to have eaten and left to be back at work on time with a few minutes to spare. SERVICE IS QUICK! TEA IS FRESH! FOOD IS OUTSTANDING! The worse Chinese food I have eaten in years. New ownership didn't know how to make Chinese food. This place is not the same Shanghai I used to eat. Also, the price is expensive for the food quality. Bottom line up front: I don't know why people think this place is good for Chinese food. I find the fast-food Chinese versions like Panda are much better than Shanghai. The long: I've been here 3 times so far since coming to Lake Jackson. If you like food drenched in sauce, this is your place. I've had the Hunan beef, twice over pork and broccoli beef. Every one seems like they were all cooked the same, regardless of the dish's name. My carrots were covered in so much sauce that they were brown all brown when I scraped the sauce off of each piece. I found myself spending my lunches and dinners scraping sauce off of the meats and veges. The punchline: I won't be back and I don't know why people think this place is so good. read more

Really good local Chinese/Vietnamese food. The best locally! Take my word for it when I say the egg rolls are like none other. That we've had! They're deep fried and oh so good! If you like hot mustard then you must ask for the home made hot mustard. The Pho here is a little on the mild side but still very good. Spring rolls are great too. I recently discovered that this restaurant offers an array of non-meat items. So I decided I would check it out, my daughter and I do not eat meat and on the kids menu they didn't offer the vegetarian lo mein so I asked the waiter if we could swap the beef lo mein for the vegetarian one and they told me that I can't and I can only buy it for the adult entree which was $8. Note that this was for my daughter who cannot eat an entire adult serving and would spoil before she eventually ate it all. Then I proceeded to ask what ingredients were in a few of the items and the waiter replied that he has no idea he doesn't even know what the item is. You could tell he was new so I didn't really take that into account but he should have had someone shadowing him so he could help us. Then our waiter got in trouble from I'm assuming the owner for something he shouldn't have done but he didn't know because no one was shadowing him. It was our first time dining there. The food took forever to come out and was mediocre at best, then it took about 25 minutes for us to pay. I never write a review for something I do not like it's just not who I am I don't want to down on someone's business, but when you offer vegetarian items and don't try to help the customer with questions or making little swaps that's when I need to make this review so other people who eat like me will know what they ate getting themselves into. It should be 2.5 stars. We ordered crab puffs & panfried dumplings as dumplings for appetizers. For our main dish we ordered something called a birds nest and general tso's chicken. The dough of the dumplings was more deep-fried as opposed to panfried. The fried crab puffs had imitation crab and more than normal filling inside. The filling was not your traditional cream cheese filling. The general tso's chicken was more tangy than normal and the chicken meat was tough. Finally, the birds nest plate was probably the best of all the dishes - however it was the most expensive. It was full of food but there were only about three or four pieces of shrimp in it. Service was average and ambience was very casual. Overall not our favorite Chinese restaurant and we will probably never return. read more

First time here. I got the Shanghai rolls and orange chicken. The rolls were great. The chicken was good but overcooked, not just slightly. It was difficult to chew. The orange chicken had great flavor but being overcooked is the reason for 3 stars. If it was not overcooked it would have been excellent. I will try again to see if it was just a fluke. read more

Pros: Food was hot and ingredients seemed to be of decent quality. Togo order was also ready in a very reasonable time. Cons: This is not good Chinese food. Lacked any real flavor and all of the dishes were just horribly executed. We ordered egg rolls, curry chicken, Singapore noodles, General Yao's chicken and salt/pepper chicken and shrimp. The egg rolls were fried too long leading to an oil saturated egg roll. Flavor of the egg roll was actually pretty decent and most likely the highlight of the entire meal. Curry chicken did not have much of a curry flavor and was not seasoned well. Singapore noodles did not even resemble Singapore noodles in any way. No curry used at all, not spicy and wheat noodles were used rather than vermicelli. Salt/pepper chicken and shrimp was poorly batterer and fried. Pieces were slightly tough and the batter was soggy rather than crispy. General Tso's chicken was fried long enough. Does not have the crispy caramelized edges that you would typically expect from this dish. Sauce for this dish was also far too runny. None of the dishes except for the Singapore noodles was offensively bad and I would most likely eat if I was really hungry but this is a bad adaptation of westernized Chinese food. read more
