Always a good experience. They are always busy, but welcoming to walk-ins. Additionally, their work and styling is always impeccable.

The biggest compliment I can give to this place is that my in-laws mentioned (offhandedly) that I had a good-looking haircut. If that's not a solid reason to go here, IN ADDITION to the glowing reviews from this place, I don't know what is! But seriously -- this place is GOOD. I showed up on a Tuesday after work without an appointment and they got my haircut done within an hour of me showing up - just before they closed for the day. The only "complaint" I have is that there's only two of them - if there were more, they could do more haircuts at once!! Alan and Julie are awesome to work with - they're very easygoing to talk to, but meticulous and hardworking when it comes to making you look good. I've been here twice now - both times have been nothing short of "amazing". Sure, it's a bit more expensive than the other places around here - but they easily make up with it via the quality of the haircut. read more

Alan and Julie both give each haircut concentrated attention down to the smallest detail. I've been going to them for years. As Julie cuts my hair, I always admire not only her work but also Alan's as I see him working on other customers' haircuts. read more

Julie did exactly what I asked for with my hair cut. I was able to get in for an appointment even though she was very busy since they were going on vacation for two weeks. She did not appear to be rushed and took time to converse about what she was doing and if it was meeting my requests. Shop is very clean and both stylists are professional, nice, knowledgeable and put the current customer as the main focus. I got lots of compliments on my cut. read more

Alan and Julie the owners are welcoming and have amazing talent. Alan has been cutting my husbands hair for 15 plus years and they have both cut my teens hair. They know the trends and do a great job. read more

I stopped in for a next day wash and style with Julie since I was from out of town and attending a local wedding. The owners were so kind to fit me in, and the vibe made me feel like I'd been coming there forever. I will definitely be coming back because of the excellent service and how seen they make you feel. Thank you, my hair lasted through the whole weekend!! read more

Shanghai Hair Studio - Wash and style with Julie - Hair Salons Near Me - Seattle, Washington

It is quite understandable why Shanghai Hair Studio has 5 stars on Yelp. I was referred to Alan and Julie over 17 years ago, Alan has continued to provide the best haircuts possible. My wife and I are moving to Oregon this week, and we will miss the friendliness of Alan and Julie. My wife started having her hair cut with Julie a few years ago, and was always quite pleased. I don't look forward to having to find a new barber, and I guarantee that if I am planning a trip to Seattle, I will time it so that I will ask Alan to cut my hair again. Thank you for being special. read more

Absolutely amazing! They know what they were doing, place is clean, and Alan puts a lot of thought into the process and even consider what happens if your hair would grow out. Highly recommend, would give 10 stars if I could. read more

Usually, getting a haircut can be a bit of a pain. However, Julie and Allen are such genuinely lovely people and great stylists, that getting a haircut feels more like spending a few minutes with friends than anything else. I have seen Allen regularly since moving to West Seattle almost three years ago. Over that time, I have genuinely enjoyed getting to know him and have never left feeling like he did less than a superb job with my hair. One aspect I like about Allen the most is that he helps you understand what YOUR hair can and cannot do. For example, I have brought him a picture and asked him to help me resemble a much better looking, much richer, celebrity blessed with fantastic hair. In the end, Allen has helped me achieve the middle-aged, middle-classed version of the style that works with the litany of cowlicks that I call, "My hair." One note. The shop does not accept credit or debit card. So please make sure that you have cash in hand when visiting the best hair salon in West Seattle. read more

Alan was great with my 9 year old son & gave him a great haircut. My son really liked him & I liked that he was really thorough with his cut. Most places I've taken my son spend 10 min at most on his haircut & send him out the door. We'll definitely be back to see Alan. read more

I have been getting my hair cut from Allan for nearly 17 years, before he opened the Shanghai Hair Studio. Allan does a great job. I wear my hair short and change it up a little bit from time to time, but what I can count on is consistency, detail and great price. - every time. Julie highlights my hair and does a fine job. These two are friendly and welcoming. The salon is clean and affordable, nothing fancy. Bring Cash, no credit cards taken here. I get compliments on my hair and refer people regularly. I think that says volumes about the quality of their cut and styles. I HEART the Shanghai Hair Studio. read more

Shanghai Hair Studio - Hair Salons Near Me - Seattle, Washington

Shanghai Hair Studio is my favorite place to swing through and get a hair cut. Alan and Julie are long-time West Seattle residents and business owners who do a great job at their amazing location in the heart of the West Seattle junction. Pay them a visit soon! read more

I got a perfect cut here before my wedding. I am usually easy going, cut what you need to do my hair looks fresher. But I really didn't want to lose any length and for the first time in my life a hairdresser listened to everything I told them. Thank you for a great haircut! read more

This is the best salon in SeattleMetro & am so pleased it in my neighborhood. Had admired the windows & seasonal inspirations, then walked in one day out of desperation for style. Luckily my bravery was met with opportunity, when Julie had a moment to shape me up.. & then it happened to be the best haircut I have ever had I my entire life! -how on earth was I paying $300 to have my hair done downtown, driving in traffic or stuck without parking[?] when this outstanding hair studio was right in our neighborhood all along?? awe the humanity! Thanks for being here Juile & Alan! read more

Alan and Julie are great! Always a consistent cut and manage to squeeze me in even when I don't have an appointment!

I was excited to check this place out after reading all the excellent Yelp reviews, but my haircut from here was HORRIBLE and I wish I would have not gone here. The person who cut my hair was extremely nice and pleasant, however, I doubt his ability to cut long hair. I have been growing out my hair for a long time now to the point where it was several inches past my shoulders. It had been about 10 weeks since my last hair cut and I only needed an inch removed to continue growing it long and healthy. To my horror, SEVERAL inches were cut off and not to mention the line is totally jagged with some pieces still much longer than others. I think he kept cutting it shorter to correct his jagged line. It looks awful. When I called to ask for my money back, I was asked to come in so he could fix it. There is positively no way I would ever allow this person or anyone there near my hair again. I was told to come in so he could see it, but if I won't be getting my money back, I won't be wasting my time to show him what a poor job he did. I hate to write such an awful review because they were very nice, friendly people and the space was clean, but the poor quality of the haircut made me want to warn other people out there about what they might be getting themselves into. I am really sad and miss my long hair and wish I would have decided to go to another salon. Hope this helps someone else to avoid the situation I have been through. One other thing, there was no receptionist to answer the phone and the person cutting my hair had to stop at least 5 times during the appointment to answer phone calls. That was annoying and time consuming. read more

Julie and Alan are awesome - they do everything they can to accomodate you and are super friendly. They also have an uncanny knack for remembering your name! These folks are the best and their pricing is fantastic too! read more

The prices- WOW, The quality- EVEN BETTER!! Love this place with a passion. The sweet little man & wife buisness they focus so much on the style you want and desire for your hair. When my friend asked if I went to Gene Jaurez because my hair looks so damn good..I was just like: No girl you need to understand this. My hair was only HALF the price of yours Lucy and it looks twice as good. I'm not telling you my secret only for future reference, your hair appointment may clash with the time I'd like some day (; read more

This is a place that I will be loyal to for as long as they are open. This is why: 1) They do a great job 2) They remember how my hair is cut. 3) Julie and Alan are great people, and work hard. 4) The cut is fast and efficient, 5) They always ask what type of product I would like applied before I leave. 6) The price is right. 7) Sometimes I can get in when I am in the neighborhood. 8) The place is close to where I live. 9) They have generous hours. Amazing service, Amazing prices Julie was wonderful. Very nice and very observant to what my individual needs were for a cut. I was in and out in under 40 minutes with my long hair needing a lot of TLC. I didn't even have to tell her where I part my hair, she noticed and cut and styled my hair exactly like I wanted it. I don't like a lot of goo while styling and she even kept that in mind only giving a spritz of hairspray on the finished style. She recommended some products to help me, but didn't pressure me to buy. I did get some though. And once my appointment was finished, I go to pay and hand Julie my credit card, she told me they are cash only. There is also a sign on the wall, I totally missed. I had no cash on me and she didn't have any concerns when I had to run out to the ATM up the street. What a wonderful hair studio. Full service and Amazing prices. I will be going back for sure. Tip: Bring Cash. My long hair - wash, haircut, & style was $30 read more

Great little family-owned place that offers no-frills, competent service. Alan and Julie are affable and accommodating to last minute cut requests. My family has been going here for years, and the kids know the rule: only Julie cuts your hair! Some things you need to know: 1) no frills means no frills. If you want a perm, go somewhere else. 2) sometimes Alan and Julie take their cute kids on a vacation. Prepare to schedule cuts around spring and/or summer breaks. 3) closed Sunday and Monday. 4) They may keep shop open a bit later if you really can't get in before 6pm. And 5) CASH ONLY. There is an ATM at the bank cater corner from the shop. read more

Believe the reviews. Best haircut I've ever had. Julie knew exactly what I wanted. Reasonable price. Got an appointment the same day. Bring cash. I wanted to update this review since I've been going to Julie for over a year now. She is such a perfectionist, I love it. I trust her so much that I just walk in and say, "Okay, what should we do this time?" And she tells me things like "It's time for bangs" or "You should go shorter in the back." I don't tell her what to do, she tells me what is going to look good. And you know what? She's always right! read more

Loved this place, so warm and friendly. I walked in for my 22 month old son's haircut and Julie made time to fit me in. She was so patient and I loved the fact that she used scissors instead of hair clippers for the whole haircut. Just one thing, its a cash only place. read more

Julie & Allen are the best! A locally owned studio with impeccable and friendly service. They are cash only. I was so lucky to find them and won't be going anywhere else. Feels great to support a small business and what you receive in return is far better than any big corporation. read more

I have been getting my haircut by Allen at Shanghai Hair Studio for about 3 years and I love Allen and my haircuts. Allen is like an artist when he cuts your hair. He is very detailed (he even trims your eyebrows if there is a runaway brow), spinning around on his stool and then looking at your hair from every angle to make sure it's perfect. I have gone to other salons in the past and they tend to get you in and out as quickly as possible, but Allen takes him time, rinses your hair (I often have to get my haircut during lunch hour) so you can walk out and not have to worry about hair being all over you. I have worn my hair in the same style forever and decided to grow it a little longer and try a new style. I told Allen this and he is onboard, offering suggestions to get my hair to the next style. He always remembers what I like and don't like. Allen and his wife Julie are the sweetest people, always greeting you with a smile and making you feel at home and that you important to them. I would highly suggest going to either Allen of Julie. I also wanted to make a comment about another person who reviewed them and said "they answered the phones about 5 times". You have to realize that this salon is a two person salon. They do not need a receptionist and they are perfectly capable of answering the phone when needed. If you are a Diva, maybe this is not the place for you. It's a family run salon (you will often see their two beautiful, young daughters playing in the back of the salon) with a great neighborhood feel. You are treated like family, get a great haircut for a great price and again, I HIGHLY recommend them! Cheers! read more

I have been having my hair cut at The Shanghai for years. Used to go for cheap cuts, then go home and fix it myself. Now, I get my hair cut every 3 weeks, I never have to FIX anything, and I look forward to my next chance to visit. I would, and do, recommend them to everyone I know. read more

I've never had a nice fadeaway haircut until this place and I don't think I'd want to go anywhere else. Alan is amazing, he just needs a picture example and a description of what you want and he does it. Best haircut place for me :) usually around $20-25 pet cut read more

I came from San Francisco and I used to go to the same person for 10 years. Moving here, I tried many barbershops, but nothing came close. Finally stopped by for a walk in on a Wednesday around 1pm and Alan was free, luckily. He is the most comparable to my previous barber and super friendly as well. Alan knows all of his customers by first name and remembers every conversation you have with him, you can't beat customer service like that! I always make an appointment just in case. I've been going here for 5 months now and love it! Haircut is $25 and I usually tip $5. Shampoo and Cut for that price is pretty hard to find. read more

I live in Bellevue and drive all the way to West Seattle for a no-frills haircut. Why? Because Julie cuts my hair every time as if she were doing surgery. She has been cutting my hair for many years; she is competent, professional, and precise. Everyone thinks that because my hair is short that it's an easy haircut. But other barbers just don't take the time to make sure it's all even. I have never left Shanghai and discovered a spot she missed. Julie and Alan always do their absolute best - every time. I highly recommend Shanghai. Just a little neighborhood hair studio, but they are the best. read more

I have been going here for the past 13 years and they are the best! July and Allen rock! They give a high quality haircut, do it at a reasonable price, and are quick and easy to schedule.
