I ordered chicken and broccoli as take out. It was ready in just a few minutes and the serving was enough for 2 meals comfortably. I really enjoyed my meal and I'll definitely be coming back! One very small downside was not getting a fortune cookie :( read more

Best Chinese restaurant in Durham. So reasonably priced. Everything is so fresh and the service is awesome. If you don't see it on their menu, ask, they'll take good care of you. read more

I've tried this restaurant a handful of times now and have yet to be disappointed. Everything I've had has been fresh and more importantly..authentic! I've been fortunate to have been spoiled by the most amazing, authentic Chinese cuisine living in Canada and this restaurant has been the closest I've gotten to the tastes of home. The shrimp stuffed tofu is so fresh tasting, delicate and delicious. Highly recommend it. I also love the salt & pepper squid as well as the pork chops. The only downside to the two dishes was being very oily. Didn't seem like any grease draining/blotting occurred once the meat was fried. The dishes kind've swam in oil. :-/ I recently had the sweet and sour pork lunch special. Loved it with the bit of pickled veggies that came with the meal..nice touch that offset the fried meat and also sets it apart from other restaurants serving the same combo. Hot & sour soup was also delicious. read more

I came here with a friend and I must say how disappointed I was with the service. We were there to order something to go and the lady at the bar, pretty much left us alone, didn't ask if we had any questions or anything like that. When she came back she didn't really greet us at all. I asked if there was a way to order orange chicken with the combinations and she just repeatedly said "no, no, no" while shaking her head without even discussing it. Then when we got our food, she asked us in an abrupt manner if we wanted any sauce and when we said yes she just threw, yes just threw the sauces on the bar and walked away. No thank you, no nothing. Rude. That whole interaction had absolutely ruined my appetite and experience from this place. Never coming back here again. read more

Shanghai is in a very uninspiring strip mall but don't let that keep you away. The food is good and so is the service. I'm a vegetarian and was happy to see so many veg choices on the menu, plus the option of having brown rice instead of white. I ordered the Happy Family Tofu with Veg, extra spicy, and the waiter asked me if I wanted spicy or super spicy! I understand that they are wary of wimpy American palates. I said "super spicy" and while the flavor was excellent, it could have been a little bit more spicy for me (but it was better than other Chinese places that have ignored my request for spicy completely). The brown rice was particularly good - great texture but not mushy. And the tofu was perfect. I'll definitely go back - lots of other things on the menu I want to try like the Szechuan string beans. read more

The food is not that great. I tried delivery three times, and one time it took forever. You should try another place.

I was craving Pork Fried Rice and my go to Chinese restaurant is closed on Sunday's. I went to Shanghai. I had enjoyed sesame chicken there before but never had their fried rice. It was very good. I still have some left over for lunch. I also had a pork egg roll which was also tasty. I recommend this place. read more

This restaurant is clean. The service is very quick. The staff is friendly. The menu is extremely varied. There are a lot of vegetarian options as well as spicy options. You will find a lot of classic Chinese dishes on the menu as well as American Chinese classics. The restaurant is very big. They have a table that can seat up to 8 as well as booths. They also have a full bar. Make sure you come and dinner. read more

I really wanted to like Shanghai however I don't. The food wasn't horrible but it wasn't very good. The fried rice was bland no flavor at all. If it hadn't been for some of the rice being white, I wouldn't have believed there was any soy sauce in it. The General Tsos was meh. I asked for the chicken as extra crispy but it soft and lacked flavor. I only ate half of the food and while I pondered putting the rest up for later, I realized I wouldn't eat it and opted to throw it away. Maybe it was just an off night but I'm doubtful I'll try it again. read more

Surprised this place has such a mediocre overall rating on here!! It is extremely close to my home and without a doubt the best chinese food around. The szechuan string beans are really good, and the fried rice is great too. All of the vegetables are incredibly fresh, which I appreciate. Definitely better than competitors in the surrounding area and a great go-to take-out restaurant. read more

I've ordered from here a few times, always delivery. For my taste, it's a little too greasy and a little too bland. They do deliver quickly, everybody was nice, and the food wasn't completely awful, but I always feel a little gross after I eat there. Decent selection of vegetarian options, but none that stand out as worth recommending. I'd order from them again if I was hungover and my usual Chinese place was closed. read more

Great Chinese food and very friendly staff. I'm from NJ/NY and this is on par with the Chinese at home. By far the best Chinese I've had below the mason Dixon line read more

Great dinner. Had the orange chicken, moo goo gai pan, chicken and broccoli, and shrimp fried rice entries. Also tried the steamed dumplings and Szechuan green beans. The best I've had in Durham. Delivery was here in no time. read more

My friend and I came here for lunch and were not that impressed. The lunch menu was typical Chinese American fare. Good but not exceptional. But we kept seeing dishes going by that didn't look like anything on the menu. Tonight I came for dinner by myself and learned that there is a Cantonese menu and a Chinese American menu with both in the same binder at dinner. I had one of their signature dishes, Shrimp stuffed eggplant. Fantastic! 5 stars for sure. So the 4 stars is for the American lunch menu but the Cantonese fare is definitely a 5. read more

Generals chicken was completely disgusting. Pure mush and zero flavor. Not worth the effort of writing a full horrible review. Stay away from this cockroach hole. read more

Ick. Food was gross. The service was tolerant at best. Definitely don't recommend. The shrimp tasted like an old stinky fish market.

They serve genuine Chinese food. Service is courteous and fast. It's also great that they serve large portions read more

I am highly disappointed. I ordered shrimp with garlic sauce and broccoli and with light sauce I was give shrimp with tons of other vegetables and a couple pieces of broccoli. I wanted light sauce but I still wanted it to actually taste like garlic sauce. It literally tasted like it was steamed it was unapologetically lacking in flavor. The only good thing I have to say is that the ordering process was easy and the delivery was quick other than that I am truly disappointed in the food quality. read more

The restaurant is clean and serves fresh food well prepared. The staff is friendly (though the "senior" members often seem to be rushing patrons) and they have the best bus person in history. He smiles, keeps the tables clean, water glasses filled and is absolutely unobtrusive. I've been to the restaurant along with friends about a half dozen times (dinner time only) and none of us have ever been disappointed. Start with the pork eggroll and try the spicy and "sweet" sauce. The spicy is guaranteed to clean up that sinus condition your quack doctor has been struggling with since you were six. Tonight we had the Orange Chicken and Sesame Chicken (white meat). Both arrived hot and perfectly prepared. The portions are sizable and typically dictate a take home container...though the food often never makes it to your front door. I understand the delivery items are also of good quality and we'll try it during a tropical depression.or snowstorm. Go here for good food served quickly in a pleasant environment. If there's a better place in the area for Cantonese, I'd like to know about it. Enjoy! read more

Food was good and reasonably priced but why did I have to wait ten minutes for a table when the restaurant was ess than half full. I did enjoy the decor of the restaurant read more

Tried Fried rice and Orange chicken, both are good. Their hot sauce on side was really spicy and I loved it as we can customize the spice level as required. read more

One of my fav places in Durham , I usually order the Hunan Pork for takeout and it is always great, nice fresh ingredients very tasty

New to the area and ordered a shrimp friedrice. It was one of the best I've had here in North Carolina. And the serving size is really good for the price. I highly recommend trying this place out. read more

Best Chinese I've found in Durham. Nice, large chunks of veggies where you typically find the little frozen-food-bag cubes.

I found this place on Yelp and figured since it was so close to our house to go and try it out. Loved it - we ordered orange chicken, sesame beef, garlic yu choy and hot and sour soup. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Shanghai - Orange chicken, garlic yu choy and sesame beef! - Cantonese Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

The nastiest General Tso's Chicken I have ever encountered, and the owner was extremely rude. A homeless person was aggressively panhandling me while I was at the counter trying to place an order. The beggar after I refused to give him money or order food as he was demanding, made a threatening comment about how he and his friends would be waiting outside for me. The owner watched it all and did absolutely nothing. I gave them another try a couple. of years later. When I tried to call in my order, the owner interrupted me, yelling that he had been waiting two hours for me to come back. I tried to explain that I was a customer trying to place an order, but he just kept yelling how he had been "waiting on me." read more

I had the worse wait time ever. First and last time there. I came and ordered at 7pm on a Friday night a combination fried rice, hot and sour soup, and cashew nut chicken. I did not get my food for one hour literally. I already paid after I ordered or I would have left. People came in after me, 6 to be exact ordered more food, called over the phone and drove there to pick it up and their food was ready, while I sat in the cold lobby the entire time. I asked after 40 minutes was my food ready just to be told a simple no. No offer of apology when I did get my food. No plates or utensils, or even a fortune cookie in the bag. I was so disgusted I didn't even eat it to tell you if the wait was worth it. My friend said it was 'okay'. Downloaded the Yelp app just to review the lack of customer service. read more

I went in for a pick-up order and tipped, but when I checked my charges on my card later they charged me two extra dollars. Make sure you ask for your receipt. Food is great but none the less I was disappointed in their dishonesty. read more

I seldom throw food away, but the orange chicken and lo mein from Shanghai were so bad, I couldn't eat more than a few bites. The chicken was soggy and thin; I felt I was eating fried chicken skins dipped in an overly sweet sauce with a plastic kick at the end. The lo mein was so greasy, I thought I was eating a noodle soup. Also, the vegetables were old and chewy. I ordered the food for delivery, which ended costing around $25. read more

The delivery was prompt, and they were reasonably priced. The food wasn't particularly good.

Pricey, not authentic at all. It's the first time I've seen a restaurant charge $9 for egg soup!

This is one of those instances where I was all set to return until the meal went downhill into a very uncomfortable territory. We were sitting eating our food, when this man with his grandson approached our table and foisted religious brochures on us and prompted his child to inform us that Jesus loved us. He then proceeded to go to every table in the room, interrupt every single meal loudly, while the owners and wait staff allowed him to proceed without ever once telling him to back off. When I informed our waiter what was going on, he said the guy was a regular and he was surprised too. Our waiter was young, probably high school age, so I don't fault him for not interfering. That said, this went on (very loudly) for a good twenty minutes, and not a single thing was done - we paid our check and left quickly to not be accosted again by the guy, who was still going around. Personally, when I go out to dinner, I don't want someone to preach to me - especially not some random stranger. It was incredibly uncomfortable. That said, if random guys forcing papers at you is no turn off, know that the food was great, and our waiter was very knowledgeable about gluten free options. He was also incredibly conscientious, and the wine was decent. Food came quickly. Really a bummer that the owners/managers allow this guy to proselytize in their restaurant, because I would have loved to eat there again. read more

My fiance and I come here all the time. The service is the fastest you'll ever have in a dine-in restaurant. The portions are generous and the prices are great. We never leave hungry or broke. I have to say they have the best egg drop soup in town - no contest. I usually order the General Tso's chicken. It's crispy and saucy, just how I like it - you can choose between white or dark meat, or both! You can be in and out of here in less than an hour if you don't have a big party. It's a great place for family and large group meals as they can accommodate a lot of people. I highly recommend eating in the restaurant rather than ordering take out; the food is much better when you eat it there. read more

I really want give this place a four star for the food but the customer service is horrible. No one came to ask us if we needed water or anything after we ordered out food and or needed anything else, just handed us a check while we were eating. read more

Best Chinese food in Durham. Friendly and quick service despite the fact they are always super busy. They have all the traditional favorites and a few items you don't see often. I have eaten in and taken out and both are great. They do close for a few hours between lunch and dinner so you have to plan for that. read more

Large portions and speedy, free delivery. Unfortunately, the food lacked flavor. We enjoyed meeting the owner. He was a very nice man and proud of his success. I honesty wish I could give a higher rating. read more

A malaysian faked Chinese restaurant. The waiter hided the normal menu and gave us a more expensive menu with limited choices. And didn't admit it until we found out the truth when we checked out. Shame on you! read more

This restaurant is a real gem: nice decor, great food, attentive and fast service, and decent wine. We had the vegetarian MaPo tofu over white rice and it was better than what we usually get in the Northern VA - DC Metro area. which was a nice surprise considering the difference in population density between there and Durham. The tofu was super silky, with a "melt in your mouth" goodness, As vegetarian-vegans, we're thrilled to have discovered this diamond in the rough right near Duke. The service was impeccably attentive and courteous, in sharp contrast to a nearby takeout Chinese place we had recently been to -- like night and day actually. We will be back. read more

This was for take out only. I hadn't called in an order, I just walked in to place my order. The staff seemed pretty busy but were quick in taking my order. Food came out really quickly and when I got home the food was delicious. This place is amazing and is my go to always for excellent and tasty Chinese food. They remember who you are. My favorites are the steamed pork dumplings, fried rice, kung pao beef, moo shu pork, egg drop soup, and the lettuce wraps. I haven't really liked the chicken dishes. Beef, pork and vegetarian are amazing! Classic table service with waiters wearing white shirts, bow ties and black paints. Gotta love it. read more
