Read the other reviews for food. Mine will solely be for info I wish businesses were upfront about. This is my fight against hidden restaurant fee-flation and for price transparency. Family fun here at such a fun and exciting place! Service is great and food is very tasty!

Shakey's is not a place I would dine at, however, this was not my choice so I went with what the group decided. It was extremely busy/crowded (Sunday afternoon). I do not eat at buffets so I did my own order (family combo). I passed by the buffet to find my seat and the buffet had food everywhere. They need to do a better job of keeping the buffet area clean. Once seated the food came out.... the chicken and mojo was on the salty side but the pizza was good. The parking lot is extremely crowded (I found street parking across the street). So have some patience when parking. This is not a place I would ever return to. Some may say otherwise.

Large 15" Pizza and Mojos

Shakey's has been around since 1954 in Sacramento. I grew up frequenting their IE restaurants, so anytime I visit there's always nostalgia. This location has street parking and several spaces in the rear. The interior was clean and well maintained. I came for a birthday celebration and the customer service was excellent. We ordered 3 large pizzas; supreme, pepperoni, pepperoni & jalapeño, 16 piece fried chicken, and Mojos. The order was delivered to the table promptly hot and fresh. The chicken and mojos were very crispy and the pizza was delicious. This is a great location to celebrate for children and adults.

We ordered a decent amount to give it a fair shot: Caesar Salad: Pretty basic. Dressing tasted almost store-bought. It was fine, but nothing I'd order again. Pepperoni Calzone: Loved that they don't cut it, it stayed super hot, and the marinara came hot too. Hubby said the flavor was really good, BUT there was just way too much dough. The filling didn't go end-to-end, so you're left 1/3 of the entire calzone more like a loaf of bread. Not a ton of toppings inside, pepperoni or cheese, for the size. Pepperoni Pizza: Came out piping hot and had good flavor, but again, the crust was a little too chewy for us. Did appreciate the generous amount of pepperoni on top. Margherita Pizza: GARLIC! Definitely not shy with it. Big tomato slices and huge basil leaves. The outer crust was actually cooked perfectly, but the center was almost undercooked and definitely not crispy. For a $100 takeout order, I was hoping to be a little more impressed. Nothing was terrible, and there were definitely some good flavors, but overall it just didn't quite hit. That said, I think there's potential here, so we'll give them another shot. Maybe next time will bump them up a star!

It was recommended to my husband and me by a friend and we happened to be in the area and hungry so decided to stop in. They do pizza by the slice and had quite a few options available when we were there. I got two cheese ($3.75 each) and my husband had the pesto chicken (around $5). I also got a side of marinara for crust-dipping for $.75. Despite heavy foot traffic our slices were out quickly and tasted hot and fresh. There is some (very limited) seating inside which we snagged. Atmosphere is very no frills & old school which I didn't mind and actually would prefer to a more "new school"/hip spot. Was it the best pizza I've ever had? No. But it was a very good rendition of NY pizza in a city whose pizza scene is (dare I say it) lackluster. The crust could be improved but the sauce was great and the ratios were spot on. It was filling without being heavy which I appreciated. And the prices are extremely fair. I'm already planning a return which is always a good sign in my book. Pizza Wagon definitely has my seal of approval.

Thin crust that is very flavorful, good sauce, not too much cheese, just enough, not that deep dish stuff that midwestern people think is pizza but is something else entirely. When I first moved here, you could not get the real deal, it was disappointing. Then the grandson of Regina's Pizza in the north End opened up the Pizza Connection is Canoga Park and it was really good. He opened a bunch of other locations but over time, not sure why, the pizza just wasn't as good. My child Emily Asher Kellis disagrees, still loves it, but she was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, so what does she really know about pizza. After trying a bunch of different "New York City" pizza joints that were just ok, we found Santino's NY Pizza in Sherman Oaks and were very happy with it, authentic East Coast pizza. Well last week I discovered they went out of business. Oh no, what were we going to do? So I researched and found there was a place in Sherman Oaks called The Pizza Wagon of Brooklyn, only two locations, here and in Brooklyn and people said it was the real deal. Tonight we tried it, and you know what, it might just be even better. Santino's sauce had a slight sweetness to it that we liked that this doesn't but the sauce is good, and the crust is even more flavorful and they are a bit more liberal with the olive oil usage, which true East Coasters love while I am told that most health conscious Southern Californians do not. Anyway, we are quite happy that we can continue to get our pizza craving satisfied when we just gotta have some slices.

Maybe if I didn't come from restaurants I might not have notice. When we were sat the host was leaning across us and setting the table after we were already sat down. There were servers literally running past our table in and out of what I assume is the server station area. We waited quite a while for drink refills. We received our pasta and finished it long before our pizzas ever showed up. Every interaction we had with the staff felt frantic. With the price per plate this isn't the experience we were expecting. I could have easily looked at this surface level and just left a low rating. However, as someone who understands how nights like this happen, I have a different opinion. The crew clearly cares. I spoke with the manager who also clearly cares. They were trying their best on a night with unexpected challenges. It was enough for me to consider coming back and to give it another try. I think any thoughts I might have about the food aren't fair given all of the circumstances. I will say this, I can see the vision. In the end our server Jon is really what made the night for us. Even though the whole restaurant was clearly very busy and had some fumbles the whole family really enjoyed his service and chatting with him. The manager working, I didn't get his name, also did an amazing job of taking care of us. So because of Jon and the manager, we will be back to give it another try sometime.

This place is as perfectly run-down today as it was when I first went there in the late eighties. The menu is exactly the same too. (Maybe the prices have changed.) The writing on the walls has gained new layers, but it's as pervasive as ever. Walking into Joe Peep's at Whitsett and Magnolia is where San Fernando Valley time stops. You can get the 5,969 Calorie pizza (and you should), which will be a mess to eat (prepare for and embrace it), with so many toppings a field of onions was literally emptied so they could sit on top of your pizza. It's the thing that sets them apart from every other NY slice in the city. If it's too thick for you, go for the Blue Collar...a more traditional thin NY pie / slice that has all the right sauce, cheese, and crust flavors and texture. As I mentioned, the L.A. pizza renaissance is here, and you can get truly fantastic thin and crispy NY style slices all over the city. Truthfully, many of those have upped the ante on the Blue Collar...BUT the Blue Collar is still really good and still gives you a truly legitimate NYC slice experience. May Joe Peeps continue on for decades to come...don't change a thing. No one needs a pizza renaissance if they're still around.

Just say sorry we screwed it up. I wouldn't have even cared that much if he just made some sort of effort or apology and been like I am sorry about that. Instead of apologizing he thought it would be a better strategy to try to Jedi mind trick the customer into believing I didn't just call and order a pizza from them.
