I used Shaffer & Sons to replace a gate two years ago. Knotty boards were used, and they took the nice lock that was on my old gate and replaced it with a shoddy one. They also left concrete debris from removing an old post in my raised bed. They were the cheapest bid ($950), but I now have a gate with holes that I will need to replace in a few years. Bruce was very responsive when we reached out in June for estimates on our deck replacements. His estimate was affordable and we felt assured when he came out to see the project as he commented on what was required according to code (apparently our dilapidated decks were not compliant and none of the other contractors we consulted with made mention of this). Bruce confirmed his availability for install beginning in late October at that time and we coordinated via email as that time approached. Bruce and his team do very great, thorough work. They were all very friendly and trustworthy. We are very pleased with our deck replacements and the dry rot pieces they both identified and replaced on our front support columns. Bruce also hung up our new address numbers for us at the conclusion of the project, which was a big help for us! We did not receive an invoice until the very end of the project (after 3 of 4 payments were made), but did receive one nonetheless. Despite this, we don't have any concern about Bruce and his team coming out to repair anything that should arise. Though, we don't expect that to happen based on the quality work they provided. Their focus is on their craft, not the administrative pieces of the business. Our deck was nearing the end of its life. We sought out multiple deck contractors and just about every one of them said it was unsalvageable and that we should replace it. However, replacing the deck would mean having to update it to current building codes and permits, which would then mean having to hire an engineer for our small 6' x 14' deck... Bruce came over, took a look and casually said, we can add more supports and fix the deck instead of having to replace it. He walked us through all the repairs he would do, he listened to our concerns and wrote up an estimate that weekend. I choose to hire him because of his straightforwardness in answering all my questions, he was so down to earth and friendly, I felt like he was trustworthy. We went from potentially having to wait months and spend $20,000 on a new replacement deck to spending about $5,000 on repairs and taking considerably less time. They were booked out till about October and would contact us when the time came closer, they did just that and were able to fix the deck in a day. We hired him to come back to build a 2nd retaining wall, his son came out and built it in less than an hour. They used high quality materials, I feel like the wood used will last a long time. A year later, we noticed that the deck was starting to sink and consulted with Bruce. He came over, took a look and figured it was probably the ground material was soft and causing the deck to sink. He offered to fix it, FREE OF CHARGE. It wasn't his fault the ground was soft, it just shows how much integrity he has in his work. Hands down, I would recommend him to anyone. I asked for separate bids on my ideas because I knew I could not afford them all at once--he was totally cool with it! I ended up doing three of them! And I could not be happier with the end results! We wanted to install a doggy door and needed to close off our backyard to create an enclosed space. In total, about 8 feet of fencing, including the gate, needed to be installed. Many other companies declined our bid because it was considered a small project and those that did accept our project were quoting us anywhere from $800-$1200 for the project. Bruce's quote was so much more affordable and he completed the project without compromising on quality whatsoever. Prior to starting the project, he stopped by our home to lay eyes on the site.
