I have a pit bull, which probably already tells you most of what you need to know. I got her as a 9 month old puppy, and she immediately made short shrift of my entire, 25-year-old (pretty rotted) perimeter fence. Not a small job, and an emergency one, because she LOVED running around the neighbors' yards. Lucian and his Dad braved the elements on extremely short notice, and built an entire new fence (mostly in the rain) for a great price. They gave me lots of upgrades, like unknotted wood, and thicker footers, and were incredibly fast and efficient. Its beautiful. That should have been enough, but - no - then my about six months later my back neighbors got their own Bernadoodle puppy, and the two dogs decided they didn't want a fence, so my pitty figured out how to pound her head against the boards until they bowed, then get her jaws on the wood, and tear through it. Lucian agreed that metal roof panels attached to the back fence would probably work (either that or an electric cattle fence), so he and his son came back out with the panels, cut them to fit, and spent a day attaching them, which - it turns out - is not as easy as it sounds. Again, quick service and excellent value. This family business, NW Modern, is fantastic, and I highly recommend them. And yes - it appears the metal roof panels are working! read more

My husband and I had been wanting to re-do our deck for years. We finally decided that 2017 was the year to tackle the project...or have a contractor tackle the project that is. I used Yelp to contact several contractors to have estimates done. If you have never used this tool in Yelp, I highly recommend it! We had a couple estimates done before Lucian from NW Modern came over. Right away we liked how personable and professional he was. He took the time to really listen to what we wanted for our new outdoor space. He came prepared with a bunch of photos of past jobs NW Modern had completed. We already knew that we wanted to have our deck built out of composite materials and it was nice that Lucian took the time to go over the pros, cons, and various prices of all the options. In the end, we decided to hire NW Modern to do our deck because they presented us with a much nicer finished product for a more reasonable price than our other estimates. We thought that the job was going to take about a week to complete, but NW Modern kicked some butt and had the job done in just two days. They cut down and got rid of a few bushes that were in the way of our new deck. They also demoed our old small deck, installed the new deck, and had everything cleaned up in the short two-day period. When we decide to redo our aging fence we will call Lucian over at NW Modern for sure. There are fence contractors and then there are true craftsmen who are like artists. NW Modern are artists and they are the creme of the crop when it comes to fence builders in Portland. The fence they built for us ADDS VALUE to our house and it is a showpiece. We are really happy with our experience with Lucian and NW Modern Fence and Deck. Lucian came out to the site and gave us a detailed bid for several projects we were considering. We selected 2 of the 4 projects to do immediately and love the new fences. We selected their steel post option in spite of our concern that the steel wouldn't look as nice as the wood posts. But boy were we wrong. In these pictures you can see how beautiful the fence is when NWM was finished. They covered the steel posts with beautiful fence boards so even up close you can barely tell these are steel pots. Such a great experience. I needed a nice short fence built so I asked NW Modern to give me a quote. He said they were too busy and running behind on their current projects so could not do this. I stated I wasn't in a hurry and they arranged a date to come and see the site and give a bid. One hour and 15 minutes before the scheduled meeting he said he had issue at another site and would need to cancel meeting.... 7 days later and there has been no attempt by this company to reschedule...not a peep. Lucian came out on September 23, 2020 to give us a quote for a fencing job. He said he was leaving for the weekend but would send out the bid when he returned in the beginning of the week. I waited about a week after the promised time and sent him a message that asked him to resend the proposal because it must have been sent to the wrong email...hopefully making it easier on him to respond with no guilt. I still received no response. I sent out another request around 5 days later and said I was disappointed that I had never heard from him. At that point I had decided to go with someone else. Wow, I was incredibly impressed with Lucian and NW Modern. We had a 25+ year old deck and front steps that needed to be replaced as it was rotting. I got 5 bids for the job and Lucian was not the highest or lowest, but he came highly recommended from another friend in the remodeling business so we went with him. We definitely made the right decision. It was obvious in dealing with Lucian that he was a straight shooter, but also had an eye for design. The other contractors didn't really suggest anything unique, while Lucian offered a number of really good design options and colors which we ended up going with. I was completely blown away with the craftsmanship and quality the their work. We have a 800 sq ft deck in the back with some stairs to the back lawn, in addition to our front steps. I watched them build this and truly believe you could drive a truck on the structure it was built so well - 10x better than what we had in place beforehand. Additionally, he put really nice angles on all of the stairs, and modified a few items mid stream in the project without any issue. They finished our job in about 2 weeks (it was a pretty big project). There were no surprises, they were always professional and on time, and they left our property clean and looking great. I should also mention that the materials that Lucian used for the project were really high quality; much higher quality than other similar priced bids. I'd hire them again in an instant.
