This is a gorgeous walking/biking path that goes from Rumford to Pawtucket and follows Central Pond…read moreand the Ten Mile River. I love that it's paved the entire way, so you can get the "nature" without fear of stepping on poison ivy or being chased by mosquitoes. Great for a mid-morning jog or an afternoon bike ride. It's a bit off the beaten path (pun intended), so here is some directional info for my fellow GPS lovers: There are two main "entrances" which both have parking lots. 1) South Entrance: The Wolf School Athletic Fields (215 Ferris Ave, Rumford) 2) North Entrance: Doreen Tomlinson Field (401 Daggett Ave, Pawtucket) Here are a few sights along the trail: 1) Hasbro Offices 2) Slater Park 3) Looff Carousel 4) Pawtucket Country Club 5) Ten Mile River Reservation In spite of its name, the trail is only 3 miles and there isn't a loop, so it's a total of 6 miles there and back. Happy hiking!

I am still not sure why this trail has "10 mile" in the name when it's only 3 miles long, but I try…read moreto not think too hard about it. Anyways, I decided to come here for the first time on a weekday afternoon and it was very pretty and peaceful, well maintained, and the perfect running distance for me. I parked on the street outside the carousel entrance of slater park, towards the Pawtucket country club which is where the trail splits. To my left was about half a mile of trail and to my left there was about 2.5 miles of trail. To the left there wasn't much to see, but there was a lot of green, so it was pretty. At the end of this chunk there is a big parking lot. To the right the trail does have more to see, especially since it cuts through slater park, there is a river, and even a dirt bike riding area. At the end of that is also a parking lot and a baseball field. The terrain is mostly flat but there are some tiny hills/slopes that can be challenging towards the end. I was able to see a red cardinal and a couple other birds.

Difficult to see in the fog or at low tide they have claimed many a victim. So way back in 1828 a simple tower was put up to warn ships. This of course proved to be inadequate so in 1871 the Pomham Rocks Lighthouse was built. Many lighthouses look similar and have the same design but the Pomham Rocks Light is a unique lighthouse that is more of an house than a light. In fact at one time it had a piano and people would stand on the shore about 800 feet away and listen to the music played by the talented keeper. The half acre island also had a fine garden and a several dogs and cats living there. Quite a comfy place. In fact one of the kitties name Tommy became quite famous for his skill in fishing. He would sit on the rocks near the water and when an unsuspecting fish would go by Tommy would grab it and bring it to shore. Tommy became quite an celebrity for his skill and personality. The actually name of the lighthouse and rocks is probably in honor of a Narragansett sachem who died in King Phillips War in 1776. Lots of history and very old names around here. The light was active until 1974 when a modular tower replaced it. It then just sort of sat neglected like lots of other lighthouses. Finally it was purchased by the Mobil Oil company in 1980. Hard to believe that a big oil company would give a flying crap about a lighthouse but apparently someone in the the company did. The oil giant gave the lighthouse and island to the lighthouse foundation of Rhode Island and the light was restored and relit in 2006. Hard to believe I would say something positive about a large oil company but Mobil does deserve a big pat on the back for this. The light can now be seen from the East Bay Bike Path or the Stone Gate Apartments on Rt 103. Of course yaking out to the cool light is the best view but you absolutely cannot go on the island. This is a unique light with tons of cool history. Just maybe someday it will be opened to the public and fools like me that dream about going into old lighthouses.

Doug Rayner Wildlife Refuge - Interesting stuff washes up on this beach sometimes. I found horseshoe crabs, bones, dead birds.

A beautiful outdoor space any time of the year; there are a number of trails to peruse this mix of coastal wetland filled with marshes, fields, forest, and farmland. There is a small parking area on George Street just as the road starts to curve. A small sign marks the entrance to the first trailhead. Named for a Barrington native and prominent naturalist, the trails here meander through the various landscape. A couple off-shoots give you access to areas like a small boardwalk area that extends into the upper marshlands. Several of the fields have birdhouses erected that attract all kinds of species. I believe I caught a couple views of some bluebirds during my time here. And geese. So many geese. Another trail delivers you to the sandy shores of the Hundred Acre Cove. Really beautiful in January when I visited, all iced over. This beach is a nesting area for the diamondback terrapin. There is a park bench on this shoreline to soak in the views. Of note, there is a seemingly out of place pistol range on site for the Barrington Police which is very well-marked for safety. All-in-all, a pleasant place to get outside.

I've also purchased several different stones that I carry with me in my pocketbook to protect me while I'm driving. My favorite thing are my Sage and my cleansing candles alongside my protection spray that she recommended that smells wonderful and alongside my spirit guides protecting me, I do feel like the spray helps.. Every time I walk into Open Doors , I'm greeted with such welcoming individuals. You feel like you're home. They're right there to share stories or help you find what you need. I'm looking forward to going back whenever I can. Thank you so much Open Doors sincerely, Jenny Folco.
