Hard to believe this windmill's been around since shortly after the War of Independence - and it looks great for its age! The windmill's got 3 levels (which you wouldn't have guessed from the outside) and you're able to climb up to the very top bonnet where the windmill blades connect with a big gear to run the millstones. Very nice displays on each level as well. Beautiful views of the Newport bridge too! The hours are limited though - so need to check its schedule - and manned by a volunteer docent. The windmill is put into full operation a couple of times a year, demonstrating the corn grinding - per the docent, the next demonstration will be July 21, 2018! Free to the public. Just a note: no restrooms or running water on site.

DO NOT STAY HERE: I stayed at the lighthouse for one night. That amounted to $600, and that's with…read morehaving to wait two years for my stay. The lighthouse itself was fine. If you can get around the bugs and the dust and being stranded for 24 hours in the middle of the ocean, you may enjoy yourself. My primary concern is the lack of safety aboard the lighthouse and the lack of care for same. At 7:30 in the morning, a strange man rolled up next to the lighthouse so close as if he was going to tie. I informed the owner, Kevin, that this happened and his response was, " Oh, probably just a fisherman. I have no control over who comes up to the lighthouse because it's public waters." I am a young female, who was staying completely alone. No locks on the doors or windows, including the bathroom door, and this is in Fall River - one of the most dangerous cities in Massachusetts. Days after my stay, the owner decided to contact me and chew me out for not giving a $50 tip. I have no idea where $50 came into play. I would never tip anyone $50 even if they cleaned my entire bathroom with their tongue. But he kept insisting that I owed him $50 for a tip and also calling it a "fee". I have worked in hospitality and tourism for the last five years, and I have never expected, chased a guest for, or been angry about not receiving a tip. I've also never stipulated the amount I was to be tipped. I found the owner wildly unprofessional, rude, and money hungry. He was not at all concerned about the safety of me or other guests for that matter. I would consider myself to be a pretty good guest. I cleaned up after myself and I even did a little extra cleaning for them, since the lighthouse really needed it. But I was met with nasty text messages days after my departure about a $50 tip that they felt entitled to. I'd also like to mention that I'm a cancer patient in my 20's and this is a grown man who makes at least $600 a night per guest and he still had the nerve to try something like this.

I got the impression that we could throw sticks all day and they wouldn't tire of the game. They accompanied us for most of our walk around the property. In the barn we met a very friendly guide who told me a little about the farm and game me a map along with a detailed description of what to look for. The farm is part of Historic New England along with a couple other properties in Rhode Island and many in Massachusetts. The admission is $4 for adults, $2 for kids and $3 for seniors. We headed out for a walk through the pastures. We saw the cows and sheep that live on the farm, a cool windmill they use to water the livestock and the most amazing views of the bay and the Jamestown bridge. When we got to the rocky beach the dogs were waiting for us to throw rocks into the water. We collected shells and sea glass before we followed the dogs back to the barnyard. There is a shop with grass-fed lamb and beef as well as restrooms which we didn't use so I can't comment on the cleanliness. The farm is beautiful and the views alone are worth the price of admission.

I've walked past the Fox Point Veterans Memorial more times than I could possibly count,…read moreparticularly during the years I lived in Providence. It's easy to pass by without giving it much thought because it isn't a huge monument or some grand attraction that demands your attention. It's a relatively modest memorial sitting near the Point Street Bridge, but once you actually stop and look at it, there's quite a bit there. The memorial was created by Aristide Berto Cianfarani, an Italian-born sculptor who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and it was dedicated in 1951. It was commissioned and paid for by the people of Providence as a memorial to local residents who served during World War II. The granite monument has bronze reliefs on both sides. One depicts male service members in combat dress, while the opposite side depicts women serving in the military. There are also olive branches representing peace and a bronze eagle on top. What I find particularly interesting is that the memorial has had something of a second life. It wasn't always situated where it is today. Its original location was farther up near Wickenden Street, where it was difficult for pedestrians to really see or appreciate. Eventually it was moved to its current location near the Point Street Bridge, where it became much more accessible to people walking along the waterfront. There's also something very Providence about the memorial itself. It was created for the people of the city, commemorating men and women from the community who went off to serve during World War II. Providence was, and remains, a city built around neighborhoods. Fox Point has changed dramatically over the decades, but having something like this tucked into the landscape provides a physical connection to an earlier Providence and to the people who lived here before the city became what it is today. I've always liked stumbling across things like this when walking around Providence. You don't necessarily need to make a special trip just to see it. If you're already in Fox Point, walking along the river, or crossing the Point Street Bridge, take a minute and stop. Look at the bronze work, look at the details, and think about why someone bothered to build it in the first place. Five stars from me. Not because a memorial is an attraction in the conventional sense, but because it is an accessible piece of Providence history that deserves to be noticed. I've passed it countless times, and I suspect I'll continue doing exactly that for years to come. Sometimes the places that become familiar parts of a city are the ones worth slowing down for every once in a while.

There are two sides; four male soldiers with rifles, each representing the Marines, Navy, Army, and Armed Forces; four females in the military are on the right side. If you enjoy nature and the sweet sound of rushing water, then this is a place you must visit. While I was taking in the sounds of the birds, frogs and rushing water a Great Blue Heron gracefully glided past me and landed in the water just at the base of the water fall. While I was watching him he was surely watching, waiting for his dinner to come flipping over the falls. A place where the water, trees, birds and fish come together in harmony.

No real parking in the area, just pull your car off the road in the dirt/grass. The Shad Factory pond is a fresh water pond, containing a dam and waterfall with a large amount of greenery to go along with it. Within minutes of stepping foot on the shore you are surrounded by tall plant life, flowers, dragonflys darting around, lilies sprouting up out of the water. Absolutely beautiful! One of the most interesting things to see here is the fish ladder that was recently rebuilt in 2007. The old one fell into disrepair (as it had been originally built in 1911). A fish ladder is a series of, in this case, concrete steps with rushing water that lead from the Palmer River up to the pond itself. Rehoboth is home to one of two remaining American Shad runs in coastal Massachusetts. This fish ladder allows eels, trout, herring, and you guessed it. . . shad to swim upstream to the fresh water pond for mating season. Prior to its being rebuilt, the fish population had sharply decreased. The address I posted is not specific to the pond itself but gives you a general idea of where along the road it is located. As it is October and Halloween is fast approaching, I will mention that this place has a bit of a ghost legend associated with it. Though I have never encountered anything during my time here, there are many reports of a man in dark clothes appearing and vanishing in the surrounding woods along with strange white lights and overwhelming feelings of terror. Beware!

There were two families checking out the troll and were very polite as everyone took turns to take photos. He is perched up top a slightly steep incline so if you have some mobility issues you may have trouble seeing all the details. Amond the Rhode Island Trolls I think my photos with Iver Mudslider were my favorite since the low angle shots made me look really tall lol.
