We loved this out of the way spot for hot pot. It's unassuming and not flashy like some of the chain restaurants that offer hot pot. No frills, but still great. TLDR: Good Food, But A Lot of Red Flags I had been wanting to try Shabu Day for a while and finally made it out. The food was honestly really good -- but there is a lot this place needs to fix before I can fully recommend it. The first thing that hit me when I walked in was the smell. And not in a good way. It smelled like a sewer. Not what you want when you are about to sit down and eat. It lingered the entire time we were there and was really hard to get past. The front of the restaurant looks okay at first glance. But once you sit down you start noticing things. The tables are wobbly and clearly rigged up with makeshift fixes. Extension cords are running visibly across the floor which looks bad and feels unsafe. The menus and sauce bottles were sticky -- like they had not been wiped down in a long time. Little things like that add up fast. I caught a glimpse of the back of the house and it looked grimy and dirty. That is a problem at any restaurant, but especially at a place where you are cooking your own food right at the table. The staff were not very welcoming either. They were hard to find when you needed something and did not seem very interested in making sure you were having a good time. Now here is the thing -- the food was actually fresh and delicious. The broth was flavorful and the ingredients were good quality. That part genuinely impressed me. But for the price they are charging? The total package is just not there yet. Good food can only carry a restaurant so far. They need to clean things up -- literally -- before I come back.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ UPDATE: One more thing worth mentioning that I think is really important. Shabu Day is strictly all you can eat -- and that is the only option they offer. For most people that is fine. But for anyone with a medical condition that limits how much they can eat, this format is a serious problem. You are being charged full all you can eat prices for food you physically cannot consume in that quantity. That is not fair and it is not inclusive. A lot of restaurants in this space offer a la carte or smaller portion options for exactly this reason. Shabu Day should do the same. It is a simple change that would make a big difference for a lot of people and would show that they actually care about all of their customers -- not just the ones who can eat the most. Food was cool. We love ramen and the experience of "cooking" it right at our table. One very short menu with a few broth and meat choices. There were very few instructions and the place could use some TLC and thorough cleaning. I didn't use the restroom but my husband thinks black mold is growing in it. This is a beloved local spot for all you can eat hot pot. The set up is that for most groups (bigger groups get more options) you will select two broths (out of three) and two meats (out of five). They will serve the hot broth and all the fixings on the side to build. This comes with noodles, veggie selections (cabbage, bok choy, mushrooms), pot stickers, fish cakes, and your meat choices. You can customize it with the sauces at the table and of course free refills of anything on the table. The service is quick. The food is outstanding. The broth flavors are legitimately 10/10. Yes it's not as customizable as some other places but it is so good. It is pretty small in there so if it's filled up, and with it being all you can eat, your wait could potentially be a bit high. The place is FANTASTIC. It does seem like a hole in the wall but don't let that dissuade you! It is all you can eat BUT don't go too crazy because they will charge you if you have a lot of leftover food, which is fair. We got the house broth and the spicy broth and both were SO flavorful. They have 3 sauces to choose from too and all of them were fantastic. You get to choose beef or pork, we had some of both and there's something about thinly sliced meat. It was so tasty. They also load you up with a veggie bowl with bok Choy, some very delicious dumplings, tofu, and mushrooms, plus a full block of noodles. It was the best complement to all the meet and a perfect well rounded meal. My only complaint is it was HOT in there and there were flies everywhere. Shabu Day is a lovely little place on Olive that serves all you can eat hot pot. This is the type of meal where you need to come hungry to get the most value / enjoyment. The restaurant can get packed during peak hours, so expect a wait if you come then. Parking is also limited, but there is street parking available behind the restaurant. When selecting meats, you can choose between three types of beef and two different types of pork. After each round, you can switch what you get to try the other types. They also provide complimentary ramen, bok choy, dumplings, fish balls, mushrooms, and cabbage. For dipping sauces there are three put out on the table (spicy, sweet, and savory). Each time I got to Shabu Day I stick to the Sukiyaki and Spicy broths, as it makes for a flavorful experience. Overall, I'd recommend Shabu Day to anyone in the STL area craving hot pot. The broth are flavorful. I went with my boyfriend here today and we have the sukiyaki broth and the shabu day house spicy broth. I like the spicy broth the most. This place is pretty new to the area. Parking is limited in the back. We have to park on the side due to coming today on Sunday night. This place is pretty busy, packed but we still manage to find a tablet when we got here. Food is pretty limited to 3 beefs and two pork, pretty simple and limited therefore minus a star. Have a bowl of vegetable with dumplings and fish balls to put in the broth. I've been waiting for a shabu place like this! I ate shabu all the time in California and missed it so much when I moved to St. Louis years ago. I usually make my own but it gets tiring. We tried Shabu Day last night and enjoyed it! We got the sukiyaki and spicy sauce. The pots are shared at the table. It comes with the meat choices and the bowl of vegetables and ramen. The broths were flavorful and the spicy broth had a nice kick. By the time we left at 7:15 most of the tables were filled (a Tuesday night). Shabu Day was delicious and such a fun dining experience! Some of the highlights were the friendly service, and I appreciated that they refilled our pot with more yummy broth rather than just hot water when it was low. We also couldn't get enough of the fish balls! While the available options were good quality, the quantity of options for sides, broth, and sauce seemed limited. The meats were yummy, but I really couldn't taste a huge difference between them, even the beef vs pork. The red bottled sauce was my favorite, but I thought the other two thinner sauces were too similar. It'd be great if the sauce options were all very distinctive, like adding a creamy peanut sauce or something. Found this spot on Instagram and since I've never had hot pot, checked it out. So dang good. I love communal dining like Korean BBQ and dim sum. Loved cooking the veggies and meats in the broth. We chose the two mild broths. I'd rather be safe with mild and add chili sauce. Next time, I'd get the house made beef broth for both as I felt the other didn't have much flavor. We chose the special pork and the brisket. Nice and marbled-fatty. Ended up getting an additional bowl of veggies since it's all you can eat but we were stuffed. I can't see how two people can finish more than the initial two choices of meat, maybe if you don't eat the ramen. I felt like the food was all superb. I knocked off a star because parking sucks and ambiance is not the greatest. The place is older and doesn't feel super clean just because it's old and there were flies around. Also, as the place got full, it got rather warm. There were three industrial fans already there; I presume they have challenges with their AC. This was my first STL Hot Pot experience and it did not disappoint. Lots of street parking nearby. My group of 5 was seated immediately, and the all you can't eat for $26.99 was incredible. Just a heads up, you will be cooking all the food yourself(or one of the members of your party) in a pot of broth. If this not what you signed up for, then this is not for you! The tables have a hot plate surface in the middle. The menu tells you to choose 2 broths and 2 meats. The server brings out the pot for the broth, which is divided into 2 sections. The menu is not very informative. It only tells you to choose 2 broths and 2 meats. It does not tell you the other food that comes with the all you can eat. In addition to the meat, you also get a plater of a couple leafy green vegetables, some type of dumpling, tofu, mushrooms and ramen. They provide you with tongs and a small strainer to put the food into the broth to cook it. The bowls they give you for the food are very small. It's hard to get the broth out of pot, since they only give you a strainer and tongs. A ladle would be very helpful. They also provide chopsticks to eat with, and a spoon. There are 3 types of sauces at the table you can add to your food, and a platter you can pour the sauces in. The broths have great flavor. If you need more of anything you just ask. Also it is very very steamy in the restaurant. There is not a lot of parking so I parked in a gas station/mechanic parking lot next door. read more

Although the provided meat was tasty and quality, the only problem we had with it is the low selection. Although there is a bowl of veggies (including Chinese cabbage, king oyster mushrooms, fish tofu, ramen, and chicken dumplings), there is only 2 types of meat to choose from: beef and pork. Although it was good quality and tasty, as a very avid hotpot enjoyer from Chicago I was slightly disappointed. Where I came from, all-you-can-eat hotpots are around the same in price ($27 per person) but their selections are a lot larger. They have beef, pork, chicken, lamb, fish, fish balls, beef/pork tripe, enoki mushrooms, a large selection of spices, and many others. However, it does have to be considered it's in the middle of University City and St.Louis is not exactly known for high Asian influence. So if you're not really that picky when it comes to hotpot (or if it's your first try and you're interested in the cultural experience), then try this place out. read more

Was absolutely delighted to see a new all-you-can-eat hot pot place open in St. Louis. Have since visited twice and have been able to try all 3 of the broths - sukiyaki, beef and house spicy. All 3 have been delicious. Sukiyaki was slightly on the sweeter end, beef was more savory, and house spicy was definitely my personal favorite with a good kick that builds with time. The meat was also quite good. I personally preferred the beef options, but both were good. However, compared to other hot pot places that I've been to, the options for meat were fairly limited, but I felt that the options that were available were more than enough to fill up on. I would also like to commend them on excellent service! The staff were consistently checking on us during both of my visits. They were quick to offer and return with refills of the vegetables, ramen, broth, and the meat, of course! Additionally, on my first visit, my group had a mishap where we accidentally knocked over a cup of water and the staff were incredibly quick to clean up and reassured us that they had it covered. I was able to introduce hot pot as a concept to two of my friends through Shabu Day, and I'm proud to say that they've successfully converted to hot pot fans. I saw this place on Olive Blvd and found out it was AYCE shabu-shabu for $27 and knew I had to try it out! For a table of five, they were kind enough to let us use two hotpots, so we got to try all three of the broths offered. The sukiyaki broth was a little too sweet to my liking, but my friends (low spice tolerance) enjoyed it. We especially enjoyed the house spicy broth and the beef broth. The service is wonderful and the meat quality is very good! I always recommend beef at shabu shabu but the pork was good as well (especially the special pork). The dumplings they gave us were very flavorful and the veggies were a nice assortment and very fresh as well. The restaurant itself is a little small but nicely decorated. Service was great! Everyone was especially helpful and gracious with our many requests for more ingredients. After tax and tip it came out to $35 per person. Would definitely recommend and I look forward to being back!
