I was asked by a friend to help resolve a problem he had with a brand new motor he bought from…read moreCulver the previous day. The new motor was a Baldor, a mainstream brand that has a reputation for good quality in my experience. This motor was bought to replace a no-start problem with a ventilation motor. The problem was that the new motor specifications did not match those of the motor it was to replace. (With a language barrier firmly in place, I'm not sure how much effort was made yesterday by Culver to diagnose a possible faulty capacitor(s) on the old capacitor start-capacitor run motor. With my friend's limited English, I'm not sure if he was able to communicate the actual problem with his old motor. At the end of the scenario below, I discovered a faulty start capacitor that was responsible for the no-start problem in the first place. More about that at the end.) The nameplate horsepower of the two motors was the same, but the old motor had a service factor (SF) of 1.15 versus the new motor only had a SF of 1.0. This difference was just enough to tip the scales against the new motor as it ran from a cold start each time for maybe an hour before the internal thermal switch (running overload protection) tripped the motor off, requiring a lengthy wait before it would start again after it had cooled off. Unfortunately the counter person in the original sale was either unaware of the actual meaning of service factor or had been misled by a common misconception in the motor trade concerning service factor. The result was that the difference between a SF of 1.15 and a SF or 1.0 was not considered in the selection of the new motor. When the new motor was presented for a return only one day after it was purchased, the main thrust of the interchange at the counter was that the new motor was suitable for the service, period, and that we, the customers, did not properly diagnose the supposed issue with the new motor in the ventilation system. Ultimately a refund was issued--minus a restocking charge--but no one was happy on either side of the counter. At this point I was 99% certain that the old motor's start capacitor was at fault, so I asked if Culver could sell us a couple of new capacitors. Without even looking at the old capacitors, we were told that the old capacitors were "proprietary" and would need to be purchased from the actual motor manufacturer. Now I was again convinced that we were dealing with ignorance at the very least, maybe worse. I won't be patronizing this company again and I have advised my friend to do the same.

I…read morecalled Jose as he had recently helped my mom out and fixed her AC when another company had said the unit was no longer workable and a five figure replacement was needed. Jose said he would get back to me that day, which was a relief and a surprise since I figured that it would be crazy times given the temperature. I didn't hear from Jose that day and I ended up booking another company to come a couple days later. So the next morning Jose gave me a call and apologized that he had not been able to come out and didn't call and that he was able to come out that day. While appreciating the follow-up, I said I had another appointment and I wasn't able to get back home that day until late due to work. Jose said he was still willing to go out and take a look that day to make up for not calling me back the day before. Well, the issue there is that I have three dogs, and they are not particularly welcoming to strangers, although they truly are harmless. Anyway, long story short, Jose made a special trip out to our house despite me not being able to make it home, made it through the dogs, diagnosed the problem, and got the AC working. I feel that Jose went above and beyond on that day to come out to my house without me being there (and 3 dogs being there) to work on our AC. He charged me a very reasonable rate and probably well below what others would have in the same situation. And both my mom's and our AC is both working super well, so I would highly recommend this company.

Highly recommended!! Don is professional, reasonably priced and does solid work…read more I first met Don Cassel about 3 years ago. My AC stopped blowing cold air--middle of summer, of course--so I called around to get someone to take a look. I knew my HVAC was very old (didn't know how old), so I was crossing my fingers I didn't need a full replacement. (The home was built in 1971, and I purchased in 2013.) Don was readily available and squeezed me in as the last stop on his way home (we both live in Fair Oaks). Luckily, Don was able to get me back up and running with a new capacitor for, I think, under $300--a relatively painless price. That was a huge relief, but Don let me know the system was about 16 years old. I figured I had a couple years or so before needing a full replacement. This summer--now 2020--the dreaded day came, and the AC was petering out. I didn't hesitate to call Don for help, and he was available to come out the next day. In the meantime, it seemed like the cooling came back--though maybe my imagination. When I called Don to cancel our appointment, he took some time over the phone to have me check a few things and walk through possible issues. In other words, even though he wasn't going to get any immediate business, he took the extra time to help me anyway. Sure enough, the AC completely died the next day, and I definitely needed Don to come out. No surprise, it was time to replace the entire 19-year-old HVAC. Don put the order in (for American Standard) on that Saturday and scheduled to do the whole job on Monday. (This was right in the middle of a 100+ heat wave, so the quick turnaround was much appreciated.) Don and his crew arrived around 7:30AM Monday, as promised, and everything was done by 5PM--even though he said the job may run into Tuesday. They left the house spotless, like they were never there. After testing and showing me how everything worked, he still came back for a followup a couple days later. The system runs great, and the house feels like a walk-in refrigerator when the AC is blowing. Don is punctual and will always call ahead as he's on his way and if he doesn't answer his phone, he calls back promptly. I was always informed of what was happening each step of the way. There were no hidden costs--i.e., his price is the price--even when Don came back to replace an old drain pipe, which he let me know might be the case. After working with him over time, I didn't bother contacting anyone else. If you have any HVAC needs, definitely give Don a call!
