I worked at SFGH before the cafeteria provided a healthy balanced menu (think burgers, no vegetarian entrees, and a sad stainless steel salad bar setup that was never used). I'm a vegetarian and could never eat there.
Afterwards, I have to say, the difference is phenomenal. For a cafeteria anyway. Staff are very kind and helpful. And sometimes, their cooks REALLY knock it out of the park. Think mushroom risotto, chilaquiles, eggplant cacciatore, chow mein, curried chickpeas, black-eyed pea étouffée. Soups are always amazing: pozole, tomato bisque, minestrone, clam chowder every Friday, etc. And now there is a salad bar at lunch.
They have a nutritionist now and it shows. One thing I've noticed is very low saturated fat and low sugar.
99% of the menus have a vegetarian entree -- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Special BBQ, holiday and ethnic menus for a lunch treat at least once a month. Very inexpensive quality wholesome food, nutritionally balanced with a side and a vegetable. Menu items are labeled fish, meat, vegan, shellfish, gluten etc.
Open to the public. There is a published menu, but I prefer to just pop in. read more
