Fantastic downtown Greenfield spot. Be sure to walk around the entire bar and take in all of the little touches that make this place so special. Brick courtyard in the back that reminds me of either Boston or Chicago. An amazing backgammon table that was commissioned just for this bar. An intimate table tucked into a nook. The first date chairs. Ledge with mini plants. Besides all of the ambiance, this bar has a remarkable beer and spirits list. Be sure to honor yourself with something special. You deserve it. Seymour offers a very short list of snacks - almonds, pistachios, pate, jerky, etc. They do however encourage to bring in any food you would like. Had a weird experience the last time we were here. Sat down, asked the bartender what he had for wines, and he rudely directed me to a sign on the other end of the bar that I couldn't read from the seat I was at. He then turned heel and walked away without acknowledging my partner. When my partner called him back and asked what whiskeys he'd recommend, dude responded, "There are a lot of whiskeys on the menu...Sorry, can't name them all." Every other interaction was equally as uncomfortable - everything we said to him, he reacted as though we had three heads. He clearly didn't know the menu, which was fine, but I'm not sure why he had to be so defensive about it. Also, he didn't tell us that the credit card reader was broken until he had brought our drinks and given us our tab, necessitating one of us making a trip to the ATM around the corner. In general, I guess I can't really say I "get" Seymour. The decor is nice I suppose, but it doesn't really justify the outrageous prices, particularly when there isn't anything on the menu that can't be found at Ryan & Casey up the road. There are perfectly good upscale bars near here that have the added benefit of also having a good food menu, not being pitch-black, and not having a crowd of people smoking out front to navigate your way through. Small, cozy bar with great little hidden touches everywhere (fiancee loved the antique schoolhouse desk used as one of the tables), high back romantic benches, a vintage Honda CB35O in the window, all wood bar. Its very warm, cozy, dark with candles everywhere. Like a members only speakeasy, but very welcoming to newcomers. We went there on a Halloween themed night and the bartender made an impeccably balanced maple bourbon sour, that was remarkable in its complexity and taste. Every time I find myself st Seymour, it's a very relaxed vibe. The beer selection is small but well curated, and the staff are very friendly, always taking time to answer any questions. It's a great place to read a book, play a game of cribbage, or catch up with friends. I'd put it somewhere between a dive bar, an upscale beer bar, and a local pub. Seymour's ambiance is it's biggest draw -- the [ever-changing] variety of specialty beers comes in a close second. The lighting is very dependent on the sun since the front is lined with large windows - bright and breezy during the day, and dimly light by candles and low-lumen lamps. Recently, the bartender saw I was reading in the corner on one of the large leather chairs, and she lit a candle on the side table next to me "for a little extra light". The bartenders have always appeared to be attendant to customer's needs and aware of the environment (i.e. changing the music volume appropriately, turning on AC or opening/closing doors). Typically, on Friday nights, the bar will fill up with lots of folks enjoying themselves, but Sunday nights and weekday afternoons are less busy, providing the opportunity to read some of the books available for your perusing. Also available for use, Seymour's has a collection of board games and a table with a built-in backgammon board. In the back, there is a small, enclosed outdoor seating area, which seems to stay quite cool on hot summer days, and there are some strung lights so folks can stay out there at night. This area is tiny and practically indoors - so [I believe] you're asked to refrain from smoking out there. Note: BE CAREFUL if you are sitting near the drain grate! The slots in the grate are larger than the chair legs, so if you move your chair to the wrong spot, you may end up falling while sitting down. (; On tap and in bottle, Seymour's offers both foreign and locally produced beers. The staff generally can offer a good amount of information about what's available and help you decide what you'd like to try - whether it's beer, cider, or some fine liquor (their bourbon collection is impressive and alluring). If you are looking to drink a Budweiser or PBR, this is not the place to go. Seymour's offerings are all specialty products, and consequently the cost for a drink is higher than at most other bars in the area. However, I find that, in addition to the changing availability of local and foreign brews, the higher cost of drinks draws a crowd of appreciative drinkers who are typically less crass than folks you might find at bars with cheap drinks. I met a friend for a drink while I was in town, and she suggested Seymour's. Seymour's has a great ambiance, with a beautiful bar. There are also some great booths, making it a great spot for a drink with friends. There's also an adorable courtyard in the back. There were a few groups in to grab a drink, and it looks like the spot to go for an afternoon drink in Greenfield. They even have Guinness on tap! The bartender and owner are really good, friendly guys to have a conversation about. The one reason I deducted a star was the prices- Seymour's is a bit pricy for the Greenfield scene. If the prices came down, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Seymour's to everyone. read more

Went here a few times, because I really wanted to like it. However, each time the male bartender was very rude, and acted like he didn't give a rats ass if you were there or not. Also, they charged $12/glass for a Cabernet that I could get for $12/bottle. I completely understand the markup in alcohol at a bar, but at those prices you'd at least expect a nice vibe in the place. This is a good spot with a good vibe. The main complain, and really I considered dropping to 3 stars because of this, is the pour sizes for spirits. People in our group had a variety of Scotches as well as other spirits, and all were poured into 1oz shot containers and not even filled all the way. Paying $8-$12 for 0.95 ounces of a spirit is outrageous. Later in the evening, someone asked for a slightly heavier pour and they got a slightly heavier pour, but were charged as a double, roughly $20 for under 2 ounces. Should look at that a bit more closely since it may not inspire repeat customers. read more

Weird how we came upon this place. We were at the traffic light waiting for it to change, when we noticed this cute, cozy looking beer hall. We turned around and decided to go in. Glad we did. They have a wide selection of very unusual beers. 12 taps, all very different. Not your usual Bud, Miller kind of place. Since I'm not really knowledgeable on all the different beers, it's hard for me to remember the names of what I tried. Something like Yetty Imperial Stout, Youngs Chocolate Stout, Fastin Bier and a few others. Steve was our server, knowledgeable, friendly, and allowed us to sample beers before we bought them. The couple next to us also ordered an "Auchentoshan 21 yr" scotch. So not only beer, but nice liquors as well. Anyway, glad we found it, we will be back again. read more

If this place were anywhere else (the bay area, NYC), it would be completely overrun with humanity. Being in Greenfield, it's quiet and wonderful. We went to the Seymour Pub to meet some friends after work. They have done a fabulous job renovating the building. The pub is one of the nicest in the area when it comes to lighting and woodwork. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. They have many beers on tap and a wide selection of single malts. Unfortunately, not one local brew can be found at this bar. I will support my local employers and farmers. Hopefully the management will understand many members of this community feel the same way! Warm and friendly atmosphere. Lots of wood in design. Large, inviting tables, and plenty of space at the bar. Nice place for meeting up with a friend or two. Outdoor seating looks super. Whole place reminds me of something you'd find in Brooklyn. Good not great beer list. Simply put, this is one of the best bars I've ever been to. The space is dynamic, with a variety of different seating areas (bar, tables, booths, armchairs, outdoors), the music selection is always top-notch, and the walls are decked with a variety of interesting books and board games in the event of lackluster conversation. They do not serve food, but are stocked with menus from the nearby restaurant. The staff is always friendly, the clientele are uniformly respectable, the prices are fair, and--last, but by no means least--whole place is always clean, even the bathroom. Went to Seymours on Saturday to meet up with some friends close to the end of the night. We arrived at 1235 with 5 ppl. There were anout 10 of our friends already there and immediately I could tell something was strange. My friend ordered a whiskey and a beer and was served. Then I right after tried to get a beer and was meet with hostility. Aggressively the bartender told me he called last call 20 minutes ago and he's not serving anymore drinks. Even though I just watched him do so. I said but it's only 1240!? He ignored me and walked past me. After talking with a few friends there I came to find out that cut of another person in our party after one drink and wouldn't serve her at his last call... 1220.... 1220!!?? Mind you that was her first drink of the night. He cut another friend off after 2 pbrs and refused to serve someone after he asked for a beer when they first walked in. Sensing something was wrong my friend chatted with him and he eventually gave him a beer which he tipped $12 on to dry to dissolve the tension. He Rudely took the tip and didn't even say thank you. Fast forward back to near the end of the night.. I'm standing talking with friends as close approaches almost 10 of and the friend who bought the drinks right before I was denied laughed boisterously at a booth with others. For some reason screech the bartender didn't like this walked out from behind the bar and ripped the beer out of his hand and told him he was supposed to finish up. Even though he never made that announcement prior and everyone else in the bar (except me and the others who were cut off for no reason ) were still finishing their drinks as well. It seems to me he couldn't handle the amount of people in the bar ( not even 20 ) and was rude to just about everyone in our party for no reason. Not to mention when u ask about any drink or have a question he rudely just tells you too look at the board. Also note everyone in our group other than use 5 were there well before close and were treated with disrespect and an unwelcome attitude from the start. Sadly for Seymours We are part of a production going on for this whole month and would have been back multiple times with a great group of people just trying to relax after a week of +12 hour days. Instead it was just stressful and unwelcoming. This group will surely NOT be returning to this bar all because one jerk who doesn't like his job. Completely unacceptable and unbelievable. read more

If "Noho" is the limit of the range on your new electric hybrid, then this place is the next coming of Christ. Or at least the bartenders seem to think so... "Local farmer" bartenders? Yeah right... Baby's butts aren't as smooth and soft as those guys hands. BTW who wants a farmer bartender? and why would a farmer make an amazing bartender? My point is that the same stupid romanticization of 'farming in the Franklin County' has brought this inspid bar. Yeah, the wood work is nice and the beer selection, though limited, is pretty good. Nice to have some whisky and scotch too, BUT a solid bar is defined not by the price of the veneer but by the warmth of relationship created by the owner, keeps and patrons.
