While exploring Renton after a visit to Wyldwood Creative, we came across Sewing Machine Service which is basically Bernina of Renton and as sewing enthusiasts (my friend even owns a Bernina), we had to pop in. I'm so glad we did as it pretty much felt like a Bernina museum. This shop is Bernina heaven with rows and rows of machines in all models, plus back rooms full of even more. One employee was especially kind and took the time to show us additional rooms so we could see the full inventory knowing full well we had zero intentions of buying anything. They don't sell fabric here, but if you're looking for a machine or need service, this seems to be the place to go. read more

I went to this store today to replace a burnt out bulb for my Juki serger. I ended up leaving with a LED replacement bulb and wow can I see what I'm sewing now! The person who helped me asked the repair person which bulb would fit and that person recommended the LED. It takes competent employees to know those little tidbits, instead of just handing me a bulb like the one I brought in. My advice is to get LED replacement bulbs for all your machines that don't have them. Unless you're young and have perfect eyes! BTW I've also purchased a machine in the past here and had my Bernina machines serviced here. Great service every time. read more

Watch out. Their marketing plan is to get you in for repairs and upsell you a new machine. If I could give zero stars I would. Last time in, and the only place I had taken my machine I came out $700 lighter in the pocket, told it was missing parts. We had not touched the machine other than to sew. How could it be missing parts. It was not fixed, just new problems created. My machine is now basically non functioning. You guys are the only ones who've touched it. I'm so done. I've probably spent $8000 in that store. But not a penny more. read more

This is an impressive facility with good inventory, warm people to speak with, and an intense industrial sewing section. I took my girlfriend's old Singer in for a tune-up. She hadn't used it in a few years, and she wanted the presser foot replaced. They told me I'd spend more money on it than it was worth and showed me some better newer machines that I could buy. The Singer had been big purchase for her at the time she bought if for herself and she was attached to it. She knew her machine well, had taken two kids clothing needs through it, and just wanted it tuned up. They said they were backlogged, and it would take quite a while. I said "we're patient. Do whatever you need to do for maintenance and if you have questions call her." Quite a whole later I asked her if she'd heard from them. She said she'd gotten a message that the work had been completed, she'd been meaning to tell me, and that we could pick it up. I was a bit perturbed that my gal hadn't told me and was embarrassed that we let it sit a long time. We own that part, it might have been 6 months (?) from the time I dropped it off. I called them before I drove there, it's about half an hour from my house and wanted to confirm that it was done as I hadn't spoken with them myself. A warm voice answered the phone and found our record. She confirmed that the work had been completed and then sounded as shocked as I was when she said, "We disposed of the machine. But I don't see any record of calling you to tell you about that." I assured her that had they called we would have said "don't." She said "I'm very sorry this was a mistake I don't know how that happened. This isn't our procedure. If we're going to dispose of a machine, we call first, and I see that we didn't." I told her we'd only gotten a call that the work was done. I felt bad for her as the bearer of bad news and impressed that she just owned it. She could have said "our policy is that if you leave it here for more than 30 days after it's done, we dispose of it" and I would have been angry at ourselves for being so slow. Every business makes some mistakes. As do I. I was nervous about telling my gal what had happened and figured I should try to make it right. I said, "Ok, do you have some sewing machine I could replace it with then, would you give me some great screaming deal on a new machine?" Then her tone changed, and she sounded a bit indignant, 'We have some machines currently on sale, but not a screaming deal." That was my turn to be shocked. Maybe I had come across as trying to take advantage of them? I dunno. But it was clear that they were not going to do anything special for us. Ok, so you acknowledge that you threw away the machine without contacting us, contrary to your own policy, and aren't going to do anything about the material loss even though you acknowledge it was your fault? That's wrong. I'm writing this review today as it's been a few more months and sewing machines are on my mind. I'm reading reviews and deciding where to buy a replacement. Probably a Bernette 37 to replace the old Singer 2950 they threw away. That would be a nice upgrade for her but not terribly extravagant. I like small independent retailers and want to support them. I won't buy from Amazon or online at all for something like this. But I'm also not going to call these folks and try to discuss this again. They threw away a machine they said they would service and didn't offer anything but a verbal apology. "Whoops! Sorry. You can buy a new one at our currently offered prices." Nope. read more

My 1-star review of Sewing Machine Service Co Inc in Renton WA is only because I can't give a 0-star review. I bought this sewing machine from them in 1975. Very long story, here's the abridged version: I took my sewing machine to them in mid-Nov 2022. They said it needed a part, so I left my it with them. I called in late-Nov, was told "The part is still not available." Called again in late-Dec and got the same answer, but this time I asked if they could look for other supplier for the part, and they said, "No. If our supplier doesn't have it, it's not available. It's a distribution chain issue." In late January I called around to see if I could find the part myself. Within 30 minutes, I had located THREE of them, two in Seattle where I live and one in Pennsylvania (they would overnight ship it to me). I called Sewing Machine Service Co Inc and told them I'd found the part. They were not interested in using a part "from an unknown source." After 2 1/2 months of waiting, I picked up my machine and took it to another shop (Hint: the biggest chain selling sewing machines and vacuums in Seattle). Now, here's the REAL news: after only 7 days I got a call from the technician saying the machine was ready, that it just needed adjustments, NO PARTS NEEDED, "running like new." And the service tune-up was $100 LESS than what Sewing Machine Service Co Inc estimated their service would cost. read more

I am sewing masks on my old Singer 99k and was having trouble with the foot pedal overheating. I though I would need to replace the motor and the foot pedal, but a quick call to these folks sorted it out and they sold me a new electronic pedal that took about 10 mi utes to install. My Sailrite sewing machine was being a turkey. I wanted to avoid paying to send a forty-pound machine to Sailrite in South Carolina. One of the Seattle Fabrics employees recommended Sewing Machine Service in Renton. I took my machine to Sewing Machine Service. After dropping it off, I pretty quickly received a call from one of the technicians, Cevin. He had found some perplexing issues, which were out of ordinary for a new'ish machine. He was kind enough to email me the details, so I could follow-up with Sailrite. Sailrite indicated my machine was under warranty, so I should mail it to them. I followed up with Cevin and said I would come pick up the machine. He replied, letting me know he'd provide a heavy cardboard box that I could use to mail it. So helpful! When I arrive to pick up my machine, there was no charge!!!!! I couldn't believe it. I am so pleased with the customer service provided! Exceeded my expectations. Although, I ultimately mailed my machine to South Carolina, I'm glad I went to Sewing Machine Service first. I live on Bainbridge Island, so the trek over isn't trivial. Having this experience was well worth the travel time. Thank you! I will happily buy my next machine here. read more

One because zero isn't an option. Unfortunately after 17 years of doing business with SMS I have to recommend that you call someone else. They sold me a bad machine and let me pay them over and over to service it. Cevin then said that it was too late to get a refund because we'd had it too long! The gall. I hadn't even asked them to refund us for the service calls. It seems that their good mechanics have moved on to better pastures. At this point I won't even buy needles there. *edited to add* I recently heard from my new mechanic (who costs less than half the amount, comes right away and actually gets the job done the first time) that Cevin has sold this machine to another small businesswoman. I've been going here for years and really like this shop. I work with industrial machines, so I mostly deal with the service department. They're very knowledgeable and have done quick repairs on my machine for free if it was a simple "pop" or something. Most the people I've dealt with there are extremely friendly and I never feel rushed when dealing with them in person or over the phone. If I had one complaint it would be that sometimes there can be a lack of communication. For example, might have a machine in and servicing is finished, but nobody calls to let me know. Better communication and they'd get 5 stars from me, but I still love this shop and give them 4 stars. read more

I have been taking my various sewing machines to this company since we moved here in October 2017. The staff is welcoming and eager to serve. I am a quilter and so my Bernina B560 gets a daily workout. Both times I brought it to be serviced I got my sewing machine back when promised and completely ready to start/finish my quilting project. They don't push for you to buy what you don't need. This is my go to place for all parts and accessories Bernina. I have also taken a class there in their great classroom and came away with a completed project. Thanks Sandy! They have a strict no returns policy, which benefits them especially when the staff is incompetent. I purchased a pedal for my sewing machine with the help of a salesperson. I tried for weeks to get the pedal to work, without success. When I tried to return the pedal because it didn't ever work, I was told by the salesperson that he couldn't give me anything for it because of their policy. Essentially, I gave that store $40 for poor customer service. I will never go there again and recommend that anyone that needs sewing machine repair or parts go somewhere else. read more

The service here is amazing. I brought my Bernina in for help as I was having trouble with the stitches when I started using a new thread. Ben found the problem with the tension and showed me how to adjust it. I also received help from Natalie who gave me suggestions on how to sew on a 4 -way stretch material. She did a mini mock up, showing the stretch stiches to uses, how to use a new presser foot as well as how to sew with double needles. She was an excellent teacher, patient and extremely knowledgeable. She showed genuine interest in my project and how to help me. I highly recommend sewing machine service of Renton. Owner Cevin Waffle is amazingly knowledgeable about all things sewing, and for a sewing geek like me, he is a joy to talk to. Mary really knows how to demo machines features, and is very helpful with any of my construction questions. There are 2 Bernina factory-trained mechanics on site, and all of my machines come back in top notch order. SMS staff are always friendly, courteous, and definitely provide excellent customer service. I am a sewing instructor, and always recommend them to all my students when they are looking for a quality dealer. In my book, their customer and machine service are as good as it gets! read more

It is ironic that this company has the word "Service" in its name, because I didn't get much of that. I paid over $2,000 to service a lot of industrial sewing machines with them. Two had to be taken to their shop for repair. I expected to see them back in a few weeks as I was originally told. I got one machine back 3 months later and the other back 5 months later. In no business is it acceptable to provide a time frame of a few weeks and then come through months later. Especially at $400 per machine. And worst of all, they never thought they were at fault or apologized for the inconvenience. I will never use their "Service" again. read more

A part fell off of my ten year old Bernette 50 as I was hemming yesterday and I was at a lost. I called SMS after finding them online and was glad to hear they provide free estimates. However, I was told the assessment would take about a week and a half since they had a backlog of machine repairs. Nevertheless, I took in my Bernette today thinking I would have to drop it off and wait for the estimate. One of the nice service men greeted me and was able to take a quick look at my Bernette. He determined it was a minor repair (a screw came loose by the needle) and quoted me $25, which is their minimum charge for even the smallest of repairs. I agreed thinking that was way cheaper than the cost of a new machine anyway. He returned a few minutes later and told me it was 'no charge" after all. I was relieved and overjoyed! I was expecting to have to wait at least a few weeks for an estimate and possibly an expensive repair, but nope he fixed it immediately and in no time. And he even offered to carry my Bernette out to the car. I would definitely consider their services again in the future. read more

Because this place was so highly recommended by a friend, I took my machine in for reconditioning before I moved to Silicon Valley. I paid them well over $100 (several years ago) and they assured me that the machine would be better than it was. I didn't do any sewing for a year or two, ,and when I tried to use it I found that the spring tensioner was defective -poorly installed or something- and never worked properly. But I was able to get it to work well enough by continuously fiddling with it and the bobbin tension. And today, while I'm trying to finish up the wedding dress and groom's suit for my son's wedding in two days, it broke down completely - the assembly disengaged and it's obvious that the spring was improperly installed. If you have them work on your machine, make sure you use it a lot immediately after getting it back, although after reading a few other comments, if they screwed up, you're SOL. I would never go back here again, even if I still lived in Seattle. read more
