I got a bathrobe as a gift That needed alterations. I recently moved to Lakeland and just did a search here for a place to have that job done. Sewbox was closest to me so I went there. This is a family run place, which I liked from the get go. The young woman who handles the counter is very competent and friendly. The job was done correctly exactly when it was promised and I received a text message telling me so. The pick up was as pleasant and efficiently handled as the drop off. Like many contractors in Florida this business seems to take on more work then they can handle. The work was not done on time and I ended up needing to go there several times before it was. Also like many contractors in Florida this business is not clear about how they charge or what their hourly rate for work is. This leaves one feeling the charge is arbitrary and hides the fact of how much they are actually charging for their work. For the amount of work done their rate seemed high. Worse was they didn't do a work or purchase order which would help define both the scope of the work being asked for by the customer and also the charges for the work; a very basic business practice. Instead she seemed to work from memory and an arbitrary charge for the work done. Consequently not only was the work not done as asked for (and late) i felt her charge too expensive. I also felt she did not take the time to clarufy the work I wanted done before starting, wasting time and money for both of us. Unless the requested work is finished to my satisfaction and in a timely manner, I will probably report her to the Better Business Bureau and likely the State Attorney General. There are a number of Google reviews of this business stating many of these same problems. While I'm fine with giving businesses the benefit of the doubt or understanding, too many in Florida take advantage of people and are not being held accountable for how they do business. Since this business did not get it right the first time and still does not seem to understand something as simple as making curtains correctly, I have a hard time letting them try again or recommending them to others. read more

I can't believe this place is still in business the way they treat customers. My wife dropped off a dress for a wedding 2 weeks ago. She called and checked to see if it was ready for pick up and they hadn't even started it!!! She's told to call back a few days later so she does and goes to pick it up. Absolutely crap quality of work, who puts a zipper on backwards?!?!? So guess what, she has to leave the dress there AGAIN to be fixed. Once completed, I've seen better alterations completed with safety pins. My wife brought these errors to their attention and was told "oh well". Oh, and the alterations cost more than the dress did!!! NEVER will recommend this location, much less be back. read more

My daughter needed a dress hemmed for a wedding. No lining. They said it would take 3 weeks. She needed in in 2 . They said they could do it and would be done by noon on 10/21. Website says $20 for hem. They charged her $48. She thought due to it being expedited but they still screwed her with the price. She called them in 10/20 to make sure it would be done the next day and they said yes. She got a text at noon on 10/21 that it was done. We go there at 3 and they can't find the dress. Well they find it but it hasn't even been hemmed yet. We had to be in Orlando at 5:30 which we did not make it. They said it would take 15 min (which means now she's paying for a crappy job). No time to try it on but we will see if they actually did anything to it when we get to the hotel. We tried to get our money back but of course they said no. Worst place ever. DO NOT GO HERE. Definitely a lesson learned for my daughter. read more

This place is great! I brought in a bridal gown that needed alterations and she did everything perfectly. She was patient and very helpful even when I had to get it altered a few times to get the right fit for the bust (the bust had complex layering, so you have to be careful when sewing it so that it sat right). I am not sure what the prices are but it was pricey (nearly the cost of the bridal dress itself), but I'm sure prices vary depending on what fabric, what type of item (jeans vs wedding dresses) and how much altering is needed. Overall very satisfied with the services. Very patient, will keep working until everything is to your liking. I will continue to come back read more

Not an honest business owner. I dropped many items for her to alter and she always charged above the average amount. The last time I left her to alter a dress that that I purchased from Nordstrom's she kept telling me that the dress was not ready I patiently went every week for about two months to pick up the dress and was told that it was not ready. I was in the process of moving and told her that I was moving out to California so she needed to locate my dress or she had to pay for the dress. She did not give me the receipt because I was a regular customer. She asked me to leave my new address and that she needed 1week more to look for the dress and if she could not find she would give me the money to purchase a new dress. She now refuses to acknowledge that I even dropped off a dress. Very disappointing that she is dishonest. Shame on her!!! read more

Helen Alterations is too expensive and they are not friendly. A pair of pants taken up in the waist cost $24, and if you decide that you want to cancel the order there is a cancellation fee of $8.96. I did not see a price list hanging in the shop. There is much better service in Lakeland. Do not go to Helen Alterations! read more
