Pasta Richard, Blackened chicken breast tossed with brandy & Asiago cream sauce served over pasta, was excellent. Smash burger special, extra special. Smash burger, turkey, ham, roast beef yes, really, even bacon and cheese. Extra yummy. Service was very good, plus let's not forget their freshly baked popovers. Oh so good. While visiting the area; we decided to try it out. We were greeted and seated quickly. It's cute, quaint and comfy. our server was friendly and attentive. My husbands side salad was surprisingly on the smaller than expected side. But, he said it tasted good. He enjoyed his burger and my open face turkey reuben was fine. The bread was very soggy, so I ate the turkey and sauerkraut. The chips that come along with it were very good. We shared a flourless chocolate cake, which although small, it was enough. Family and friends decided to eat here the other day... on a whim...while passing through Cazenovia. Can't say enough great things about this place! Service was good but salad was embarrassingly small, calamari was tough, dry with too much breading and chicken was both small and bland. Aside from salad, nothing had much flavor. French onion soup was as-advertised - very good - full of onions and bread and cheese. Our son's cheeseburger was very flavorful - was grilled - tasted fresh, nice bun. Fries were crispy and delicious. I had a side salad which was fresh but average, and a pizza for which I selected my own toppings. Quite lackluster. The beer lines were obviously dirty, providing a foul taste to my beer. Our baked brie app with hot jelly and fruit was tasty as were the popovers, but that is the extent of compliments I can give. I ordered the blackened haddock wrap. It was edible. I got it with bacon which definitely helped. My wife ordered the seafood bisque and crabcakes. The crabcakes were essentially 100% filler. She sent those back as they were inedible. The seafood bisque, although having a good flavor, completely lacked ANY actual seafood, even as a decoration. I mean not even one little scrap of crab meat. Exceedingly disappointing. Will not return. They get a second star for at least taking the crabcakes off the bill, decent service, and the baked brie. read more

This place was simply awesome, couldn't of been happier. Couple of stone steps down to the basement tavern suitable for kids is it's away from the bar area made this great. Nice old fireplace in the corner and a lot of wood around the structure itself made it very rustic homey and comfortable. The popovers were tremendous as usual, I wish I had the stomach capacity to eat 10 more. I got the turkey Reuben, the wife got the corn beef Ruben, and the kids got Pasta with butter sauce and pizza. Everything was very good, the staff was attentive even though our server was very inexperienced as it was her first day. This was my first time going here. We went for a lunch as a group of four and honestly, aside from the very nice waitress and historical decor, I don't think I would be suggesting this place unless someone else desperately wanted to go. Two of us ordered a cup of soup; I had the minestrone while someone else had the seafood bisque. The flavor of my soup was pretty good, but the other soup was not impressive as it was literally just broth and not a shred of seafood/potato/anything solid. Both of our soups were brought to us pretty much room temp, maybe like it had been microwaved for 10 seconds but definitely not hot or even significantly warm. Two members of our table seemed to enjoy their burger and chicken parm sandwich. I ordered a wedge salad, which I have never ordered anywhere before (I find the idea of a "wedge" salad very boring) but I thought since it came with tomatoes and cucumbers and since I wasn't super hungry to begin with, that might be a good option. No, I was wrong. The iceberg lettuce was a wedge, as promised, so I can't take points off of that; but the salad came with a few carrots chunks and celery bits. Granted, it did have bacon crumbles as listed on the menu (the only good part) but... carrots and celery?... No tomatoes or cucumbers in sight. I instantly regretted my decision at ordering this plate of rabbit food. I know a salad is a salad and truly what did I expect? But if a salad is listed as having certain ingredients, I feel like it should come with those, and not substituted for random other veggies. I'm not one to complain, so I did not say anything. Someone else at the table did, however, mention that I was unhappy with my salad. I embarrassingly insisted it was okay, certainly not their fault and truly would rather have walked away from the whole thing without saying a word rather than bringing it up. The waitress comped an alcoholic beverage off of our bill, which was very nice of her; again, the waitress was great. The popovers were good. Another puzzling fact: we couldn't figure out why they used navy blue bathroom hand towels as napkins on every table, first time I've seen that. read more

This is more of a review of seven stone steps, the pub downstairs. The food here is fantastic. The environment is casual but nice. There is a bit of a feeling of being in a 19th century tavern. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. But I'm writing because of one significant complaint: Because it is one of my favorites around here, I made plans to have dinner here on a Friday night a couple weeks ago to celebrate my birthday. First, I called the restaurant to ask about making a reservation. Sorry, they don't take reservations. Ok, so I ask the person on the phone to tell me, when would be a good time to arrive for dinner and how long do you usually expect people to have to wait to get a table? After first being given not much of any answer at all, I was eventually told that anytime after 7pm would be a good time to come and the wait is likely to be not more than 20 minutes. So, Friday comes, we pack up the car, arrive at the restaurant and ask for a table. Sorry, she says, we have an open table for 6 right now, but there are people coming for the table. I ask, "What do you mean there are people coming for the table?" The hostess explains, oh, well, they called ahead to say they are on their way for the table. Ok, so, apparently they do not take reservations, but if you call to "reserve" table before you have arrived, they will "reserve" the table for you? Isn't that what a reservation is? Then I'm told that the wait is expected to be an hour and a half, which, because of the ages of my companions (both young and old), I could not agree to. This made a very poor impression with me. Either you take reservations, or you don't. There was an open table waiting for us, but someone had called ahead? If I needed to call ahead, that is something that the person on the phone should have mentioned in the first place when I called ahead the day before to ask about getting a table! We ended up having a nice meal at Les Pates et Les Nouilles, a Thai restaurant down the street. I'm sure I'll end up back at the Seven Stone Steps sometime again, but I don't know when. read more

Another great find... Our server was fantastic(if I could remember her name, it would be mentioned here). She was very laid back but professional, and was nice enough to explain the gluten free options on the menu. The calamari appetizer was cooked perfectly and not over salted, with some great side sauces. The wagyu beef burger was amazing and cooked perfectly medium rare! (This is somehow becoming a challenge to a lot of other restaurants in the area, so points for you guys). The atmosphere is laid back but classy....on the darker side, and really nice for a date night. Definitely worthy of another visit. read more

Although the atmosphere upstairs is a bit stuffy for my taste, I'm not a fancy gal, the tavern in the basement is by far one of my favorite places to eat in the area Seven stone steps, both the name of the tavern and the number of steps down from the front of the lincklaen house, is the perfect little spot to grab a quick drink or enjoy some of their fabulous pub fare. They actually have an incredibly extensive dinner menu and each entree begins with a to die for hot popover with honey butter. I spent my 30th birthday at a snug little table nestled in the tavern on a Wednesday night when all bottles of wine are Half price! They have great burgers, interesting salads and fresh fish! Came here based on the good reviews. Unfortunately, that's not any guarantee. Started with Seafood Bisque. Is it my imagination or shouldn't there be at least one shred of a piece of seafood in it. It was strictly broth. Next had the escargots. Which were basically broiled with cheddar cheese on top. Really? Cheddar? And usually you receive at least some garlic bread or garnish to make it at least look good. Very chewy. Next we ordered the most expensive dish on the menu, the pot roast. It came with a very generic tomato sauce. Once again, a very odd cooking choice. This dining experience reminded me of the show 'Bar Rescue' as it should definitely be nominated for a rescue. It was an utter failure culinary-wise and it was basically like throwing $100 out the window. Beer was 100% flat. Not one bubble. To top it off the bartender started playing music on the jukebox. Which was fine and it was good music, but the background music speaker was right over our table. We asked if they could please turn off the other music so we would only hear only the jukebox and not two at once and female bartender rudely just stated 'No.' I don't write a lot of reviews unless they deserve it. Often a restaurant that has been consistent in their service and good food tends to rest on their laurels. After leaving the area years ago and returning on a visit, we remembered that the Lincklaen House always had a great reputation. We decided to try the Seven Steps tavern and sadly we were not as impressed as we thought we would be. Our waitress was having a bad day, so we don't want to set anything on her, but our order was completely messed up. The food was only OK. One popover was burnt, crab cakes were over cooked and crispy. Drinks were forgotten. We won't return anytime too soon or recommend it to friends. It makes us sad, because it used to be a great place. Don't rest on your laurels - it's time to update the interior, clean up the place, get sharp service and prosper! read more

For the second time this summer we ate at the tavern, Seven Stone Steps. Food was fresh and delicious. The popovers are awesome and we all had sandwiches/burgers. I had a delicious chicken salad sandwich w/ fresh fruit. Everyone loved their food. Word of caution: SKIP dessert - last time I tried the blueberry ravioli (horrible!) and we tried the apple crisp which was also bad. How can you ruin apple crisp??? read more

First time here. This was an interesting find and tucked away like Cinderella. We stopped in for lunch and was nicely surprised. We were able to sit by the fire as this place is small, but very enjoyable. Our waitress, Paula, was wonderful. She knew the menu and could make recommendations. Which I love as they should know what the food tastes like. She was very attentive and made our time there most enjoyable. I ordered the English Portobello Sandwich. Very enjoyable and not what I was expecting as it wasn't soggy and it was warmed just enough to pull all the flavors together. My husband had the open faced Reuben and couldn't finish it! He loved that as well. Down side was the side.. I found the pasta salad having a gummy feel to it. Flavor could have been more spicy and possibly cooked more? I'm not sure what would have changed that and it could be just an off day. But that was the only negative other than having to gladly pay the bill! LOL I will be visiting here again! Flavorful food. We ordered an appetizer (asiago bruschetta) and 2 small plates (vegetable risotto and seafood au gratin), all of which were amazing. Your dining experience begins with a freshly baked pop over with butter you can actually spread. The wine is delicious (Cabernet and Red Zinfandel) and the service was friendly, fast and knowledgeable. The ambiance is warm and inviting (fireplace included) and the prices are very good for what you get. Portions for the small plates were much larger than other places and the leftovers heated up well. If you find yourself in Cazenovia, relax and enjoy a meal at the Seven Stone Steps. read more
