Booths line the edges like polite sentries and the bar itself is lined with slot/video poker machines in case you feel like doubling your disappointment. I arrived with a party of four just 45 minutes before last call on a Tuesday. You would think that would be enough time for a few drinks and a few laughs. You would be wrong. There was a man in a suit behind the bar doing what I can only assume was performance art meant to mimic sabotage. There was a bar back who had the dazed expression of a man recently asked to name all the moons of Jupiter in alphabetical order. The bartender moved with the speed and confidence of a tortoise delivering bad news to a hungry bobcat. Service was a game of drink-by-drink roulette. He took our orders one at a time in the most literal sense. One person would speak. He would leave. He would return eventually with something resembling said dink. Another person would speak. He would leave again. Rinse. Repeat. We might have been speaking in code and he was off deciphering it at the opposite corner of the bar. The drinks were okay. Not good. Not bad. Okay. The menu was fun to look at though. They called them potions. In the VooDoo Lounge. How clever. It was the highlight of the visit and the only reason I gave them a second star. That and the fact that I did not actually die there. Oh and the prices. Nineteen dollars to sip Instragramable mediocrity from a glass shaped like regret.

The bar occasionally offers live music, but my favorite time to visit is during the holidays, when they turn it into a festive Christmas spot with holiday beverages. There are fun decorations, strands of lights, Home Alone 2 playing on the televisions, and much more to really get you in the holiday spirit. I most recently tried the Pomegranate Margarita on their seasonal menu and thought it was excellent; it was not too sweet or too weak. I should note that there are rarely servers in the lounge area, so you typically need to go up to the bar to place an order, which can disrupt the flow of fun you might be having. Overall, I think the 1927 Lounge is decent on a normal day, but much better when they have a themed takeover happening.

Consistently, there is a salad bar. Also, a huge variety of desserts to finish off your meal. The lounge also touts two bars inside. My drinks have always been made right by friendly mixologists. In addition, staff are diligent about keeping the tables clean. The Laurel Lounge is a member perk that is reasonably priced; I look forward to going again.

As it's mainly a cocktail bar there are only around six crafty beers on tap and a group of domestics and imports in bottle. Nice spot for a drink but no happy hour is pretty lame. Really? All the other bars have a happy hour. Why not here? If you want to sit in the lounge area it's a one drink minimum. Kind of an upscale decor with assorted seating, lighting, and art on the walls. Expect to pay in the $12-16 range for a cocktail and $7 for a beer. Brooklyn chocolate stout and Pappy Van Winkle if you really want to splurge. Oh yeah.
