Booths line the edges like polite sentries and the bar itself is lined with slot/video poker machines in case you feel like doubling your disappointment. I arrived with a party of four just 45 minutes before last call on a Tuesday. You would think that would be enough time for a few drinks and a few laughs. You would be wrong. There was a man in a suit behind the bar doing what I can only assume was performance art meant to mimic sabotage. There was a bar back who had the dazed expression of a man recently asked to name all the moons of Jupiter in alphabetical order. The bartender moved with the speed and confidence of a tortoise delivering bad news to a hungry bobcat. Service was a game of drink-by-drink roulette. He took our orders one at a time in the most literal sense. One person would speak. He would leave. He would return eventually with something resembling said dink. Another person would speak. He would leave again. Rinse. Repeat. We might have been speaking in code and he was off deciphering it at the opposite corner of the bar. The drinks were okay. Not good. Not bad. Okay. The menu was fun to look at though. They called them potions. In the VooDoo Lounge. How clever. It was the highlight of the visit and the only reason I gave them a second star. That and the fact that I did not actually die there. Oh and the prices. Nineteen dollars to sip Instragramable mediocrity from a glass shaped like regret.

Competent, even charming, although his frequent reminders that songs will be played in order of greatest tip to least made us think his salary was entirely gratuity based. He played what people wanted to hear across a wide spread of genres, which is a kind of small miracle. Still, it felt like a watered down substitute for something that once had a pulse. The ghost in the room was Gypsy Bar, which used to offer actual live music on weekends. Closing it was, in my opinion, a small but meaningful cultural error. Now, between B Bar, Long Bar, and this place, the Borgata has achieved a kind of perfectly acceptable sameness. Three bars, none of them offensive, none of them memorable. My wife ordered her usual gin and tonic, a drink that asks for very little and is satisfied when it receives it. I went with a Sazerac, motivated by the presence of absinthe, which I had somehow avoided my entire life. It turns out absinthe does not cause hallucinations, unless you count the fleeting belief that you are having a more interesting drink than everyone else. Still, it was well made and nicely presented, as was hers. Service was slow, which felt odd given that the bar was not especially crowded. Not neglectful, just unhurried in a way that made you aware of time passing. Prices were what one expects in a casino hotel lobby. High enough to remind you where you are. In the end, it is fine. Perfectly fine. You'll probably get a pretty good drink, you might hear a pleasant song, and except for your wallet, you'll leave no worse off than when you arrived. But you may also find yourself remembering something better that used to exist in the same building, and wondering why it doesn't anymore. Four stars, though at least half of one of them is doing a fair amount of emotional labor.

Next thing I know, the bartender, Domingo, starts yelling from behind the bar and then comes around questioning why I was in the establishment. He made it very clear that the restrooms were for paying customers only. I firmly replied, "I plan to dine in, but need to use the restroom first. Is that a problem?" He didn't seem too happy with that response and walked away. As intended, I sat at the bar and ordered wings and truffle fries. The food wasn't particularly memorable, but the wings were a decent size. The truffle fries were fine, but nothing that stood out. Antonio clocked in about halfway through my meal and was a breath of fresh air. He was friendly, attentive, and completely changed the tone of the experience. Overall, it was a good visit with decent food and great service from Antonio. Unfortunately, my first interaction with Domingo left a poor impression and took away from what otherwise would have been a positive experience.

My wife and I began with a meatball appetizer special, a wise decision that rewarded us immediately. Six petite, tender and rich meatballs, the kind that makes you briefly forgive the invention of fast casual dining. I had the lasagna, layered and comforting, like a well organized memory. She had the chicken parmigiana, which achieved that rare balance of crisp and tender, as if someone in the kitchen still actually cared about cause and effect. Both dishes were executed with confidence, the kind that suggests this kitchen knows exactly what it is doing, even if the room around it is having an identity crisis. The wine was not bad. Not transcendent, not life altering, but entirely capable of doing its job, which is to make you slightly more agreeable to everything. Service was also very good. Attentive without hovering, present without becoming a character in the story. The ossobuco was tender and the bone marrow was buttery. The risotto was ok but I didn't like the texture. The sangria was sweet. Overall the food was good.

We didn't send it back because we all know how things can go left when sending back food and drinks but we did decide we wouldn't frequent this bar again anytime we're in Hard Rock.

It's one of the better nights of the buffet selections of food. The mashed potatoes are whipped up so much and perfect amount of butter that are out of this world. I lucked out with a medium rare piece of beef of my choose. They also always have shrimp cocktail, salads, sandwiches, soup and dessert. They offer you unlimited alcoholic beverages of your choice. You can help yourself and sit where you want as I like sitting at the bar area. The bartenders are so nice and make you feel right at home.

And for those who want fruit, salads, cakes, or sweets, you name it -- they probably have it. They also serve good coffee and pretty much any alcoholic drink you'd want. And they always have the same waitress -- she's great.

Bally's may not rank high on the resort echelon in Atlantic City and it's not out of the question to consider Mountain Bar one of its greatest assets. (#2) For starters, Mountain Bar is no puny bar. Compared to many other casino bars, it is a true sprawl and quite spacious. It absolutely embodies the "wild west" theme of the casino and offers pretty extensive seating all throughout the bar and various tables. They also have a number of beer pong tables, a mechanical bull, a dedicated stage and dance floor, and a motorized toy train that rides atop the rocky wall decor at the top of the venue. They have dedicated DJs, mini concerts, and drink specials constantly, which brings in a serious crowd nightly. Drinks wise, it reminds me a lot of what a dive bar might serve. A lot of sweet cocktails and basic concoctions, but the pour is pretty serious. Many of the drinks can be hard to down given the harshness of bottom shelf liquor and limited stuff on tap. When in doubt, go for shots. I think the bartenders could be friendlier; something tells me they're jaded from the constant flow of drink tickets, lousy tippers, and general dbaggery. The patrons range from bridge and tunnel to sleazy and slimy, which makes for a rough mingling session if needs be.
