We came late in the season after a hot summer so it's not surprising that the heat had taken its toll. There were a lot of pretty big dead spots on the fairways, but the greens weren't terrible. The driving range was very odd, it only went about 150 yards out before there was a dirt hill, so you couldn't really see any shots further than that. They were friendly in the clubhouse, but the range kept suggesting our twosome join up with another twosome despite never waiting on the tee box or waiting for the group in front or behind us. It felt like they were irritated we hadn't joined up, despite the fact that we weren't slowing down play. We enjoyed our time here, but for the price, I'd look elsewhere. read more

Getting your golf day off to a good start is important, Staff is friendly and helpful, and will do that, Course was dried out after the September drought, Most of the tee boxes need watering. Lot of work to sink a tee in the ground. However, all the greens were watered and held a good shot, You had to fix ball marks, Greens were fast too, as usual. On the baked out fairways, balls rolled forever. No complaints with that, I didn't encounter much dead grass on approach shots. Nothing to warrant moving the ball, The traps had some of the best sand I've encountered in the area. That course conditions didn't affect our golf, Our lousy swings did that. Settlers has some elevated greens and tee boxes that really make you feel good when you play them well, Probably why we keep coming back, Not enough water jugs on course. No beverage cart. Those are things I can handle. Weekday senior fees of 51 bucks with cart are on the high side. read more

I have been playing golf for 52 years and I've never played a course in poorer condition and settlers Hill. What a massive disappointment.

If I could give this course negative stars I would. Worst golf management I have ever seen. Took 4 hours for nine holes and the starter hung up on us and clocked out. Asking for a refund and never coming back. read more

This course is in bad shape. Both the greens and fairways remind me of Chicago Park District courses that I used to play growing up. The thing that makes it even worse is that they charge a upscale rate ($61) for a course in such poor condition. They don't have a Senior rate like most courses and their everyone rate is higher than most other courses in the area. We won't be playing there again any time soon! read more

Settlers Hill had been one of my favorite courses to play - a long time ago. Unfortunately, I went there this weekend and it was in horrible condition (after two years of being closed for renovations). The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were all awfully maintained. And the new hole numbers? What were they thinking. I stopped in the clubhouse to talk to someone about it and the staff said that speaking with the manager would go unnoticed so don't bother. I also golfed Cantigny and Tanna Farms. They were a complete 180 - great courses and great staff. Unfortunately, I will probably never go back to Settlers. Pretty sad but there are a ton of much better cared for and better run courses in the area that I will be more than happy to spend my money. read more

The course was well maintained. Lots of old stuff. Long way from pro shop to the course. For a bunch of old guys it was too far from the parking lot to the pro shop and long way to the first tee. We are all old guys who love to golf. read more

Extremely disappointing, but typical for this place. Haven't played in years, mainly due to slow play where a 5+ hour round was the norm. However, we were anxious to try the new layout. Very overpriced ($45 senior) for conditions and amenities and those same problems with the course have not been addressed. No ranger, no starter, no beverage cart on the course, new "concession" trailer at the turn closed, no water coolers on the course, only port-a-potties on the course, no windshields on the carts, no return to clubhouse till after 17! Play extremely slow.....mom and dad with two young kids learning the game in front of us....finally called it quits after 16. NEVER AGAIN, for sure this time! read more

They redid the course. I like the new layout. The fairways and greens are getting rough already. A few years ago the senior rate was $27 on a Tuesday. Last time i played it was $45. They don't use a starter or a ranger and my last round was horribly slow. 4 hours 10 min. We waited on about 14 holes at the tee box. Sometimes, 4some on green - 4 some in Fairway - 4 some on tee box and then us a 2 some. I've played there a lot in the past 10 years and I hate to say but it seems they just don't care about player experience. read more

Used to be a $30 course for seniors. Set on top of a garbage dump with decades of tree growth, it's got deep dark swamps, rolling plains, trees and water everywhere. Fast greens, Crazy greens. All kinds of elevation changes. I thought it was a lot of fun and variety, although pace could be slow, and there was no clubhouse. I would give it 4 stars in the old days, OK, they closed it for two years, rennovated a few holes, and opened too soon last August. On the back 9, the grass hadn't matured in some fairways and taking a divot meant you killed a chunk of grass. Many greens were still raw. First hole unfinished,. Still no clubhouse, and they wanted high 40's for a weekday senior, I haven't gone and won;t go in 2023. as they're still under construction and the rates page now says $53 for a non-rez senior? If I want to pay that much, there's a bunch of better courses. read more

Played here before remodel of course. Loved it. Played here last Sunday, the course is in god awful condition, the tee boxes were so hard we are lucky one guy had a screwdriver to put the tees in ground. Pace of play was slow. Played on a Tues. on the 5th hole through the 9th , there were 4-5 groups on EVERY HOLE. Call to pro shop ignored - no ranger on the course.

I never really cared for the condition of this course and the slow play like a lot of other reviewers have mentioned. The course is over 30 years old but still has never completely filled in. You'll get a lot of plugged (fried egg) lies. The greens have always been super fast. You almost have to purposely hit your approach shots short and let them run up to the flag if possible. As others have mentioned, the tee boxes are like bricks. Uneven ground, weeds and hardly any grass to properly place a tee. It's a shame. If it were in better than average shape, it would be a great course. I don't ever see it happening. read more

The course is decently challenging, and the guy working the register in the clubhouse was great. The ranger however, was not. He was very rude about looking for a ball for 2 minutes, setting the tone for the day and being the main reason for the review score. I would understand if it was long, but literally 2 minutes looking on hole one and he set the tone for our day with that. Just an overall unpleasant experience. read more

Settler's Hill is a disappointment. Since the course redesign the service and conditions have suffered. The price has increased which is unjustified. Slow play in front of us seems to be allowed when we reporting it to the club house. Course shows bare dirt on the fairways and worn areas at tee boxes. The new chipping practice holes should be complimentary with no fee. Bring back the old prices if this the best they can do. read more

$55 for 18 holes on a Tuesday morning. Should've known better. I had hopes for a decent round here considering the course touting their "soft opening" and "great conditions". Every hole had tore up fairways or beat up greens. The sod must have been laid on concrete. Good luck getting something to sit down on a green. Felt like I was skipping rocks across ice. We had a 630am tee time and had 3 foursomes. Coming from the north side if the city this course is far, but I knew that going into this. Likes -link style front 9, challenging tree lined back 9 Well maintained greens $55 deal for 18 on a Sunday of memorial day weekend good pace of play the regulated by the ranger Dislikes- nats everywhere....not sure if it is because its an old landfill, if it's the time of year, but they were around the entire time. Yardage could be marked better on par 5s. The beer cart lady doesnt take credit cards...very inconvenient. read more

Let me start out by saying that my family has been a member at the North Shore Country Club for over 40 years and it is a incredible golf course with an incredible staff. With that being said Settler's Hill golf course built on a garbage dump and is run by the Forrest Preserve has the most arrogant staff and act like you should be privileged to golf here. Don't golf here unless you want crabby old employees to ruin your day off with friends. By the way the fairways have more divots than potholes on Lake Shore Drive! read more

I unfortunately did not see the closed sign on the putting green, so the insane pro shop attendant came stammering out of the pro shop and screamed "Get OFF!!!" Like he was some psycho, deranged, mentally ill, off duty cop yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off his lawn. I can not emphasize enough how rude and aggressive it was. It was so truly bizarre, intense and without reason I do truly believe this curmudgeons behaviors should be regulated and held accountable. The appropriate response in a normal tone of voice would have been, "hey guys, the putting green is closed." Course was nice and the price was fair. :) read more

Sign on the door to the golf shop states "Welcome back, the course is in a soft opening phase and is still under construction but in GREAT SHAPE". Understatment to say the least. Course is in very poor condition, especially of course the par (3's). Golfers are responsible for divot repairs in tee boxes but it appears course management does little to repair them either. No divot repair bottles on carts for fairway repairs, no drinking stations on the course. All this and they charge ($65) for weekend golf. Can only compare this course to the last few years Mill Creek Golf Course was open (3-4) years back and any golfer that hit balls in the Fox Valley area will understand . There are other courses in the area that are in better shape and don't charge that much to golf. Will personally no return here. read more

This has got to be the WORST Golf pasture that I have ever played. 1). The golf carts, old gas carts WITH NO WINDSHIELDS. 2). There are no Tee boxes, it's just burned out crabgrass and weeds. 3, The so called fairways are unfairways. It's a shame I didn't know this before I paid to play here. I understand this course is on a waste dump, now I can understand why.. they should be ashamed to accept money for golfers to play on that CRAP COURSE. And that trying to be nice. I might be a bit impatient but, since Settler's Hill redesign, the management or grounds crew does not seem to have the ability to grow grass or maintain this facility. Greens fee was $45 with cart. For that we were subjected to fairways without grass. Sections cut out and left with bare dirt. Most fairways were brown with little to no turf and riddled with weeds and clover. Green we're ok however, they appeared to be painted or sprayed green. The 17th hole was unplayable due to active fairway sprinklers with no one in site to allow us to play through. The attention to detail and golfer experience is seriously lacking. The course layout is fun and challenging however, the condition is horrible. This course should remain closed until the fairways have more time mature and get the weed and grab grass under control or at least be transparent on their website regarding course condition. This course is not worth $45 (senior rate) and I would not recommend this course in its current condition or at its current price point. Additionally, this course is infested with gnats and pest control might be helpful to improve the experience. read more

Horribly run facility. No rangers and the course is flooded with slow play. A well-run course would have rangers to endure fast play. This course has none even though we called the pro shop two times and asked for a ranger to get out and get people moving. I haven't seen such a poorly run place since Old Oak. Now Settler's Hill goes on my never play again list. And it should be on yours too! Far too many choices available to suffer through a six-plus hour round if golf with indifferent course workers. Go someplace else and you will be happy. Stay away from this place. read more

The place needs some work. Power carts are two to a cart. Not from the same household ? Makes no difference. I was told by the cashier that my only option was to walk the course. I'm 73 years old, it would be a difficult course to walk, so I played the entire round in a mask. Not fun. Also if you are riding, be alert. The cart path is AWFUL. read more

3 Years ago I used to play this course a few times a year, since then I tried to get out once a year to play it, and I am sorry to say its lost its appeal to me. The condition of the course has really dropped over the years. Tried to squeeze in 18 holes yesterday with a 2:51 tee time, we got off maybe 10 minutes early No ranger on the course to keep play moving, lots of 2 some's in front of me. After finishing hole 13, went inside to ask for a rain check for 9 since I didn't think we would have enough light to finish, gentleman inside told me we were right on pace, and said he had a ranger out there keeping people moving, which was false. I try to golf 40-50 rounds a year, and I've golfed this place about a dozen times over the last few years. After my last experience, I doubt I will ever return. Hands down, this course has some of the most awful facilities, and to make matters worse, unfriendly employees. Stationed in a repurposed barn, one must walk almost upright to enter (beware folks that have trouble walking up steep inclines). Once inside, you're greeted by folks who seem to have just started working at the course: problems with the computer system, problems understanding your order, you name it. Once you're finally are able to pay (note: look for an on-line special, NEVER pay anything close to full price), you're greeted by an old model gas powered cart (no GPS). When you make it up another hill (luckily now in a cart), you are greeted by an old curmudgeon. Better park your cart properly, or you may get scolded. Take too long to grab your club and tee-off, watch out, they'll let you know. Which is where my biggest complaint comes in. They are so concerned about getting you off, but then the pace of play is so inconsistent. I was there last Tuesday and after getting rushed to start, we got halfway through and then had to wait 15 minutes at each hole. There were four foursomes on one hole! I've never seen that before. Never. But I thought, wait, at any moment, one of those rough around the edges Rangers would come out to move things along. Nope. They couldn't be found. After playing nine so fast, to stop at a screeching halt for the back nine just ruined my entire round. Unacceptable. When we complained, the ranger didn't want to hear about it. He said, "it happens, can't do anything about it." So it's normal to have so many groups on a hole and have to wait that long? I guess if you've only golfed this place that would be true. The course itself isn't bad. Nice, scenic, challenging holes. Overall, can't complain (note: after a decent rain a few holes are under water). If it's a hot day, be sure to bring plenty of water! There is no water on the course. They claim it's for player safety, but if that's the case, are all the other clubs that DO have water crazy? This is my first and only review of a golf course. I write this to warn others. Play elsewhere. read more
