What can I say? There are a lot of green grassy areas, and it was clean. That's cool! It's located in downtown Houston. Some nice statues. We were there early evening. We were able to take some nice photos in the park of the Houston cityscape. Saw a few folks jogging, and some folks riding their bike. Make sure to be aware of your surrounding when you are here. Our friends almost got ran over by cyclists. I probably would have liked it better if the water was clean. With the water being so brown, it was not very attractive. Just looked like dirty water. Overall, the park was okay. Would not go out of my way to visit, though. read more

Sesquicentennial Park is located in the Houston Theater Arts District. This is a 22-acre park that's a great to explore if you're here early for a show nearby. Sesquicentennial Park connects to a couple of bayou trails. Along the east, the bayou trail which will eventually lead you to Buffalo Bayou Park. On the western end, you'll hit the Buffalo Bayou Greenway and UHD, and can eventually head north to the White Oak Greenway. Amongst the features of the park is the "Big Bubble," a hidden red button which creates bubbles in the Buffalo Bayou. Unfortunately, it has been out of service since 2019. Parking is best found in the parking garages nearby, but will come at a cost. read more

Sesquicentennial Park is along the banks of Buffalo Bayou in the theatre district of downtown. It was developed to commemorate Houston and Texas's 150th birthday and was completed in 1989. This park is a little hidden gem in downtown. It has a fountain that leads down to a walkway that stretches in between the Wortham and the bayou. The most prominent feature of the park is the set of seven metal pillars, Seven Wonders. The pillars are a collage of drawings by children all born in the sesquicentennial year, 1986. Each pillar represents a theme: agriculture, energy, manufacturing, medicine, philanthropy, technology, and transportation. I wish I was taller or that the city put some sort of viewing area so you could see the pillars better. I'm stuck just looking at the metal squares at the bottom of each 70 foot tall pillar. At the far end of the park is the common, a large sloping grassy circle. More recently, the city erected a bronze statue of James Baker III and some information about him in the Baker Common at the top of the grassy area. If you look closely in the direction he is gazing, you can see President Bush on the other side of the bayou looking back. The coolest thing about this park, BY FAR, is The Big Bubble. If you look below the second of the seven pillars, the pillar actually on the Preston street bridge, you will find a mysterious red button. The button has no directions or even a warning. If you are brave enough to push it, quickly look over the edge of the bridge to see a large bubble of air breaking the surface of the bayou. I've usually on ride through Sesquicentennial Park on my bike a few times a week. It's actually a little hidden treasure within downtown. You get a different perspective of downtown when you visit here. An up close and personal look at the sky scrapers, plus a fresh view of the aquarium. I'm most cases, you'll find photographers snapping shots throughout different spots. It's not your typical park, but that's what makes it unique. It felt like I had stumbled on a hidden gem when my friend and I went! I have been to this area hundreds of time and I never knew that this park existed! It was very clean and was well lit compared to other parts of the Bayou. It takes you from the the Houston Ballet academy to the back of several performance halls so it feels very intimate. However, parking is very limited so it may be better to park further down the Bayou and walk here. I'm thankful for Pokemon go leading me there! read more

Beautiful park, and great place to take engagement photos. However, as I've heeded before in my other reviews, please watch all of your valuables. I hate to stereotype the buffalo bayou, but due to my personal experiences as well as family and friends experiences it's a hot spot for theft. While taking pictures, my bag was stolen (literally a few feet in front of me.) I tracked my phone and it seemed like the thief was running away, following the bayou path. U won't hold my misfortune on this park's ratings, however please be very aware of your surroundings. read more

This park is located near the downtown Aquarium in the theater district of Houston. It's actually located below street level so you don't really notice it from when you're driving along the street unless you're actively looking for it. There are many ways to access this park but mainly all consist of going down some stairs. We found metered street parking near Preston Street so we parked the car and started exploring. There are lots of walking trails/paths. We took off down the stairs off of the Mosbacher bridge on Preston street. From there we had to go down some more somewhat narrow stairs. Once we were level with the Bayou, I noticed that there is no barrier to avoid accidentally falling into the Bayou. Best to keep an eye on the little ones near this part of the walking trail. It looked kind of unkept and it also smelled like urine down here. As we continued walking along the trail, we noticed a lot of bikers passing by so it must be a popular bike trail. We also noticed a few other people out for an evening stroll in workout gear. There were some nice concrete rails at this point of our walk so we continued onward rather than going back up to street level. I imagine it looks slightly better during the daytime as opposed to how it looks at sunset/dusk. As we kept moving westward, we eventually came upon the Wortham theatre waterfall. We also saw a homeless person washing his face (or taking a drink) in the pool of water at the bottom of the waterfall. We went up the steps alongside the waterfall up to street level at this point. We actually walked back towards Preston street and then re-entered the park through the Baker Common. Before we entered the park again though, we had to "burp the bayou". There's a somewhat hidden red button along one of the alcoves on Preston street. Once pushed, it will enable a spot in the Bayou nearby to "bubble up". Kids may enjoy this little activity. Back to Baker Common. This is where they have a monument of James A. Baker III and there are all these interesting facts about him and his predecessors inscribed in stone for all visitors to see. There's a large rolling lawn here which my son enjoyed running up and down on. At the bottom is where you can take up the walking trail along the Bayou. There is a set of stone steps spread out to where you can come down for lunch if you're in the area and have a peaceful time away from the sounds of the city above. It's fascinating to have these trails travel along the bayou's winding path and underneath bridges that fill with traffic along the northern edge of downtown Houston. Across the Bayou, as you're walking back up (along Bagby street) is a monument of George Bush. Back on the southern side of the Bayou are benches along the upper part of the lawn and walking path which also leads to a ramp that gets you up back up to street level (at Congress?). The only bad thing about Sesquicentennial park is that there are no bathrooms (hence the urine smell along the bayous edge underneath the bridges) and it doesn't seem to be a very popular park. There aren't any events held here that I've heard of and it's away from the general public since it's below street level. I wouldn't come here by myself since it seems a bit secluded. It does seem popular for bikers and runners but I've noticed that runners/walkers seem to come in pairs or groups, never alone. This is more type of park used for exercising than bringing little children to. read more

Pretty view of the city, near the bayou, great for taking photos. I've seen so many engagement photos being planned here. The grass patch is really well kept. It has a big hill to sit on, or roll down. Of course there are the wonderful steps to also sit on. Really cool place in the middle of the city. read more
