I hadn't been to Serranos in two years before last week. It was dark and felt a bit dingy back then. But darn it, I wanted fajitas on a sizzling skillet and knew that Serranos did that. What I hadn't counted on what the dramatically improved ambiance, salsa, grilled onions, and service. The service improvement makes sense to me after meeting Stefan and seeing how he manages things. He's incredibly attentive and supportive of his staff so that drinks are properly filled etc if servers are occupied elsewhere. You can tell they make everything with passion. Went to lunch with my family at Serranos which is a reliable choice fort TexMex in Austin. Serranos is a Mexican restaurant and bar that merges family recipes with broader Mexican traditions. They start the meal with free tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa is a bit on the spicy side and is not my favorite. I wish there were some milder salsa options available for us gringos. Water has a huge mold taste. Food here is pretty decent but the service is extremely poor. The food here is decent to good (minus the rice). Tortillas are homemade nice and thick, salsita is great and the Tulum plate is pretty flavorful. Here's the thing. The server not once made any refill, asked how the food was or asked if we needed anything else. Didn't bother asking if we'd like the check --just came by and plopped two papers down without asking if we needed anything else. This could use tons and tons of improvement. We let our server know that our child has allergies and she said she'd ask the cook if the fries were fried in peanut oil or contained dairy additives and never came back with any information on allergens. read more

Had to stop into Serranos while in town. The food is always good. Karla served us and she was the friendliest waitress I've come across in months. She talked about her favorite dishes and then engaged in a small conversation. Manager came by our table to make sure all was good (they usually do this). I ordered the cheese dip, veggie enchilada with chicken added and my husband had pork tacos with Mexican street corn. I didn't eat much of the dip (I thought my husband was going to eat it but that was a no go - saved room for desert) and when the bill came, the manager took it off our bill. The food was good, enchiladas were bursting with flavor and goodness. The chicken in my enchiladas was a little bland and rubbery. My husband said the tacos were good, pork was tender and flavorful but the street corn was mediocre (had to much sauce for his liking). For desert we had Flan. This was not smooth like we thought it would be but it was still good. For as busy as Serranos gets, the loudness is low. The decorators did a great job with sound dampening. We went for cinco de Mayo, and everywhere else was packed with an hour wait. While they gave us an approximate 45 minutes wait for a party of 3, we actually found a spot at the bar and had dinner there. The waiter/bartender, Josh if I remember right, was very nice and efficient. I ordered margs on the rocks, they were very good. I love queso, but I thought this queso was just ok, and that's why I took one star out. I got the fajita steak enchiladas and swapped for queso sauce and that was very good. I didn't have time to take a pic cause I was too hungry but I recommend that combo. Overall a good spot for tex mex, and with reasonable prices. Hey Serranos - we really like your food but the ordering experience on DoorDash is awful. The normal menu options are not there. For example, you cannot get rice and beans with an order of Grandes Tacos. The only options available are to pick queso appetizers or soup. What the heck? You can't get shrimp quesadillas - why? Can't choose other side options or meat options for plates - not cool. We like to get delivery sometimes but we usually have to pick up because ToastTab actually offers the correct options for your menu. Please look into this and figure out how to fix it.
