They checked the transmission and found that it needed to be replaced (I am glad that I towed it here, I would not have trusted anyone other than a AAA shop to give me the news). My van had a lot of miles on it and it was not worth it to replace the transmission, it was dead :-( . They really went out of their way to assist me including driving me to U-Haul to pick up my rental and allowing me to leave the van on their lot while I completed my trip.

Here's what happened: The local Ford dealership told us our tires were worn. 7/32 tread depth in the front and 6/32 in the rear. I ordered four new Cooper tires from Tetrault. My wife took our car to have the tires installed while i was at work. The manager comes out and asks my wife if we wanted them to put our old tires in our car to take home when they install the new tires as they hadn't installed them yet. My wife was puzzled so she called me and had me talk to the manager. He explained that our tires were like new and figured we were replacing them because they were Michelin CrossClimate2 Grand Touring All-Season Tires and he thought we wanted summer tires and then rotate them back to the Michelins next winter. I told him what the Ford dealership had told me and he said, no our tires are just like new. I asked if he minded if we didn't buy the new tires even though they had them shipped to the shop just for us and they were a special size. He said no problem. One needed a lot of work to get road safe. It wasnt easy, as they were having to fix bad work done by other fortunua mechanic and a bit of front end damage to my blazer after a spin out that hit the hillside at 55 mph (damn hwy 36). One mechanic (JC Auto) took 2 1/2 months and $3000 to do an "improper installation of a new intake mainfold" per the dodge dealer. And another expensive fortuna mechanic (Rocha's) didnt know how to fix the a/c system on my ford ranger but billed $1800 to try (they forgot to put refrigerant in). Calvin fixed it in half a day for under $500. In my 8 years of experience with local shops, out of 7 of them only 2 really shine - Busted Knuckle and Mike's Brake Service. The others are over priced and will kill you with diagnostic fees.
