Gotta update my review because there is no longer a Sephora area in JCPenney in the mall- it's now at Kohl's stores, which is not in this particular mall. A few years ago Sephora went down to 2 samples with a purchase, instead of 3. Ordering online is obviously a bit easier, but the sample selection at an actual store is better and it's so nice getting to try the products and especially smell the perfumes in person. Valarie and Lili were the associates who helped me the other day. Lili found a great shade of the new YSL foundation for me. I went into this store and it was DISGUSTING. Look on the tops of the displays where they put the little tools to try the makeup....carpet of dust. When I was there one sales associate could not be troubled to bend down and pick up 2 makeup applicators that were at her feet on the floor bc she was way too busy on her phone. I wasn't greeted. I wasn't thanked for coming in. one sales associate seemed only interested in applying HER OWN makeup rather than helping people. On the make up displays there was also caked dust. All this while AT LEAST 4-5 associates stood there and did nothing. I would not try on anything there to save my life! I am not in the mood to get a fungal or staff infection. I don't buy or wear makeup that often, but I decided to stop by on Black Friday and finally find a foundation that matches my complexion. I'm so glad I came in because the associates were so helpful and helped me find the perfect match from Rihanna's Fenty Beauty Collection. I got her "trophy wife" highlighter as well (as pictured). I might have to start trying to do my makeup more often because these products are amazing. Special thanks to Arianna for making sure I found everything I was looking for before I left. It's been nearly a year since my last visit to the Oak Park location. As mentioned before, I am skincare and makeup fanatic and I am very picky on products I purchase and where. Previous reviews range from poor customer service to lack of diversity among staff and minorities being racially profiled at other Sephora locations. I visited a few weeks ago and here is my review: Popular! You're going to be pop-u-lar: You can guarantee this location is going to be absolutely crowded, given the location is in the mall. For a Sunday afternoon, it was pretty busy. It's probably better to visit this location during the week while school is in. Diversity: As mentioned in my Ulta review, Sephora has a leg up on the diversity among their staff. Even the Leawood-Town Center location has Black employees. Though they have a better understanding of hiring a diverse staff, they still need help in other areas. Customer Service: I am usually greeted upon entering this store location. There were plenty of employees and everyone seemed to be attentive to the customers. My issue was at checkout. The cashier seemed rushed and did not ask about my loyalty points or how I wanted to use them. She did seem overwhelmed, as the line got long rather quickly. I feel she should have taken note from her co-worker, who was treating every customer like they were the only one in the store and her bubbly personality was infectious. I did reach out to their customer service team and they said they would take care of it. I appreciated how quickly they responded and the extra points they gave me. Online only: This visit, I was specifically looking for the Givenchy Prism Libre Matte foundation. An associate told me Sephora does not carry it in store-only online. This was disappointing. I would have to go to Nordstrom to shop the product in person. True Colors: I do feel that Sephora needs to hire more employees that understand foundation formulas and know how to color match foundation on various types of skin. I have had this issue before and so have previous reviewers. The lightning is not great in the store for foundation match to begin with, but there should still be someone knowledgeable in this area. And it should not be just one employee. Finding someone to match a foundation color is like pulling teeth. Overall, I have had better visits at this location. I appreciate their staff diversity and willingness to help find products when asked, but they do need to do better about having employees that know how to color match. This location is also hit or miss on positive customer service interactions, mainly at the checkout. I do not mind visiting this location during the week when it's not extremely busy, but for now, I will stick to shopping online. read more

I really do not enjoy visiting this Sephora, the staff is standoffish and makes my time there uncomfortable. It's as if they mind you being there and interrupting their personal conversations. I've worked in retail before and you need to have the understanding that customer service should be your priority and if you don't want to help than perhaps you're in the wrong field. It's uncomfortable going there and they should really make a change as store fronts are closing due to low business. I was only there for my friend who'd never worn makeup and wanted to be matched for foundation. They were so dismissive and didn't help her at all, talk about poor first experience. read more

Okay so I just need to give a special shoutout to Jessica aka the corgi lady. She's seriously the best shade matching specialist I've ever had. I've lived in LA, Los Vegas, and Denver so I think that's saying something. No one has ever consistently always nailed my shades on the head. Service is definitely a hit or miss. My first trip here was amazing !! She stayed with me the entire time, ok yea the place was fairly empty but she was patient and gave advice and opinions. Now for today on the weekend shopping. One employee that helped me that was appointed to me by I sure was the manager or something was very short answered and didn't know what color would fit my face. I am African American and she started from the very end of deep. Now I'm chocolate but my face has light areas and a rather red undertone. So when it's completely covered with a darker or lighter color I look all kinds of crazy. I had to tell her to try the lighter colors on me and then she goes to say they all look good on me... Mm are they required to be sweet or something? Tell me the real as I'm here spending enough and I need to be buying more important things than makeup. Ok after telling what she should try, much of what I could have done on my own, found a good color. I wanted to try the "better than sex" by two face and she showed me where it was after saying she couldn't recommend me a mascara due to everyone being different. Mmm eye lashes are eyelashes how much different could I be from the next. Anyway after showing me the tester she went about her way.. Thank God left room for another employee. I then met Mal I think, he is the tall handsome guy with the black hair and makeup is fierce, while playing in mascara. Two face didn't live up to what I thought it would be so he recommended the Marc Jacobs velvet noir major volume and me and my friend fell in love. No need to look anymore I'm heading to the counter with this and my foundation. Got my birthday gift which is pretty small I think they should make the product alil bigger or something but hey free lip and lip liner that will run out faster than a house cat. So I've been saying I want new cologne for a while, and the boyfriend tells me that when he used to live on the East coast he'd always go to Sephora because they had a huge selection and a lot of hard to find brands. Neither of us had ever been to one in the KC metro, and decided to give it a shot. Look, i know that i'm not an expert on fragrance or make-up stores, so i'll keep the review short. but here is what i noticed as a consumer: the place was sloppy. merchandising was at a level of TJ Max or Marshall's, with empty spots where product must have sold out and general clutter elsewhere. I never saw an employee, let alone was asked to be assisted. I can't speak for the quality of products as a whole, as i was just in and out to look for something specific. All I know is that if I was running this business, I'd be embarrassed by the state of my store. read more

(This is for the Sephora STORE, not the one in Pennys) I was greeted fairly quickly after I arrived, but I had to seek out help regarding an empty item that I wanted. However, after that, I got really good service. I felt like they were honest and helpful, and I got a few samples that I can't wait to try out, to go along with my purchase. I never see any 'bargains'; things generally cost the same as they would in the department store, and the dept. store is the way to go if they are 'gifting'. But if your fave brand isn't 'gifting' at Macy's or Dillard's or Nordstroms, check here. You do get beauty points for free stuff. read more

Sephora in one word: Paradise. If you've ever seen those new or featured products in the Cosmo, Glamour, Allure, etc., then here is the place to try it out. They have stations all over the store where you can try lotion, mascara, eyeliner, powder, eyeshadow...etc. Any beauty product you have ever thought that you've needed, or even ones that you know you don't really need, well, you can find it here. I love the BareEscentuals mineral makeup (better than foundation, I swear!) so whenever I run out, I just buy it here. A little pricey, but definitely worth every penny. Since most of the products are from higher-end lines, they are little pricier than regular make-up you would find in Wal-Mart, but most of the time, it is worth it. If you are having trouble justifying that $15 tube of mascara, it's also great to be able to try it before you buy it. It guarantees that you find the right product for you, instead of just guessing or picking something that just 'looks cool'. I'd also recommend getting trial sizes that they offer- they are cheaper and if you get bored easily with products, this is a good alternative. The store is well-organized (by brand with perfume and cologne around the sides) and the sales staff is really friendly and knowledgeable about what products may be the best for you, depending on what you are looking for. I'd recommend this store to any girl who wants to upgrade their beauty supplies, but aren't sure if the products are worth the price. read more

I haven't been to Sephora in awhile as I actually haven't been inside Oak Park Mall much in the past year or two (I usually visit Nordstrom because it's an anchor with direct access which allows for bypassing all of that awful traffic). A friend dragged me along to do some shopping so I decided what the heck. I was surprised to see how much the mens section was downsized and relegated to a sad corner way in the back. Way to help men feel welcome :(. I must say though every single associate was so nice and provided any assistance I needed. I was in the market for a spring/summer cologne and I found a nice Dior scent that was perfect. I was just a little bummed because I remember the mens cologne section used to be huge. I get though that the ladies are bigger retail spenders when it comes to beauty and cosmetics (thank god we men call it grooming and skincare) so the new layout makes more sense. Given the poor selection and similar price points I'll probably stick to Halls or Nordstrom to keep smelling nice. read more

Omg, talk about horrible service. It was an inconvenience for the 7 sales associates working to help my friend and I find makeup. We were greeted fleetingly as we walked in the store, then ignored for over five minutes. After walking over to a group of five sales associates and asking them for help, I was told they did not have anyone to help us. Frustrated, my friend and I walked out of the store but decided to go back, as we came to the mall for the purpose of finding makeup. After demanding service the manager then took another five minutes to locate an associate who previously told me she was too busy to help us. She was incredibly unhelpful and acted like it was a chore to help us. Needless to say, AVOID this Sephora. Rude and lazy doesn't begin to describe these people! read more

I usually love this cosmetics store and their products, but this mall store has horrible service. They are out of many products and have very limited stock. When I asked a question they said go buy it online....There were five or six women working, but only one cashier. So a 30 minute wait to pay. The other clerks kept walking by messing around and finally one opened another register. I spent $125 for stuff and got very bad service. I like what I got, but tried to redeem points and the clerk forgot and said "oh well" just keep them for later. Do I mention the store was super messy and tissues and q tips all over. Garbage was over flowing. I will never go back! I get get all the same stuff anywhere with better service or plan ahead and go o line. So, a makeup junkie walks into a Sephora...okay, I'm not really sure where that joke was going because nothing is a laughing matter at the Mothership Sephora. This specific location brings me nostalgia, a not very well designed cramped store layout, and some of my favorite employees- Christina I see you- all in one, something the spacious shiny newer plaza store can't. Being a self proclaimed makeup addict and mall rat makes the Oak Park Sephora a kill two birds with one stone type of spot(never mind the JC Penny Sephora only an outdated mall-walk away) but why this Sephora gets a 5 star review is the level of service I always receive when I walk in, I am never ignored or passed by and when I preschedule a service, I would not recommend walk-ins because this specific location is always packed with teenagers wanting their brows done, the application is always just a hint better then what I could have produced on my own. Christina is amaze-balls at color and also, most recently I had a gentleman who was so bomb! I'm so sad I don't remember his name, another review mentioned Mal, but he is GLAM and knows how to do the instagram makeup trend, he used the KatVonD Pastel Goth palette in a way I never thought of and gave me a mermaid turquoise ombré liquid lip! read more

I really love Sephora...online. The store at Oak Park is generally a nightmare. Too crowded, staff scattered about paying too much attention to some customers and ignoring others, long waits to check out, etc. If you're like me, when you go to Sephora, you can't escape without spending 50 bucks, right? So why not just shop online in your jammies to get a greater selection and less headache and shipped to your door in a few days for free? The only reason I ever go to the store anymore is if I haven't thought ahead and I have run out of something and absolutely cannot wait for it to be shipped. read more

Yesterday I walked in to Sephora for the first time ever. I was on a quest for a slightly unusual lipstick, and I had gone to another big, expensive beauty store only to be told that not only did they not have it, no one did. When I walked into Sephora and asked them for blue lipstick, the salesperson immediately lee exactly which line to take me to. Then she offered me several options, gave me lip primer and a tester so I could try it, and was utterly charming and a joy to work with. I would happily return to Sephora again, and I can recommend Rae as an excellent consultant there. I've been spending a lot of time at Sephora recently. There are so many options for skincare, cosmetics, and fragrances, and this Sephora carries most of them. I usually buy mainly Urban Decay, but buy a few products from other lines. I have three favorite employees and am really excited when they are able to help me. I like trying free samples before buying and their rewards program is pretty good. I can always find something new I want here and the quality is always good. Plus, they carry more products and limited editions on-line, where the rewards program works the same. read more

I love Sephora for the huge product selection, ability to get samples of any product before buying and because they will let you return used products that did not work for you. I shop enough that I'm a Rouge VIB. I've gone to this Sephora for 8 years and had never had a bad, or especially good, experience there. I usually just go when I'm in the area since I live 45 minutes away. Recently I have noticed the staff are way less attentive. Maybe they are only seasonal, but the attitude of most is that they feel burdened with the task of even asking if you've found everything okay. Yesterday I went and while it was super crowded, buT there was ample amount of staff. I always know what I'm going for before I get there, but this time I saw a new product that I had questions about. I saw 3 staff hovered together chatting but a 4th was not with them. She made eye contact with me, I said hello and attempted to ask a question when she turned and engaged in conversation with the other 3 associates. So I wandered down to another staff person. I should have just kept walking as she was standing, arms crossed looking like she would love to be anywhere but there. Instead of telling me she wasn't familiar with the product, she took the box and read it to me, telling me what I had already read and not answering the question. She then gave me a really vague non answer. I finally was asked by someone who seemed to somewhat care if I was finding everything okay, and she gave me the information I needed. At checkout the staff were all chatting. Eventually one asked if I was ready, which I had been for a few minutes since I'd been standing in the queue watching them talk the whole time. They didn't pack all my items, so after checkout I had to grab the rest to make sure I left with it. They didn't show me what the insider options were and despite me spending $250, they didn't throw in any additional samples as they used to do with most purchases. Just shop Sephora online. You'll get your pick of samples, often there's good discounts or packages, and the user reviews are far more helpful than what the staff at this Sephora will be. read more

I normally shop Sephora online, but today I made a mad dash to the store. I've been in around the holidays and I know how crowded this place. Today it wasn't too bad. There were no staff working outside of the check out or the make up chair, but I knew where I was going and what I wanted today. I picked up some Carol's Daughter hair products for my angel's Rupunzalesque locs. I made my way to the counter and was immediately greeted and checked out. The cashier took my zip code and birthdate to locate my Beauty Insider account. (BTW, save those points year round and cash them in during the holiday season when the deals are killer!!) I asked for a cologne sample, which the cashier quickly put together for me. Overall this was a good visit. If you typically pay more than $25, you should shop online and get free shipping. I also use ebates.com and get a rebate on my Sephora purchases. I'll be back. read more

I went here a few days ago looking for a foundation for an evening event. I went in the morning to the one located in the JC Penny store. Nathan was there and helped me out. He was knowledgeable, informative and super helpful. I couldn't find any foundation to my liking so, he referred me to their bigger location on the 2nd floor of the mall. He gave me a couple of foundation suggestions to try once I got up there. The ladies who were up in that store was super helpful and friendly as well. I'm so sorry but I don't remember their names. I know one was a Bobbi Brown specialist (short blonde hair and glasses) and the other lady was a Dior specialist (young lady with long curly black hair with a pretty flower banquet around her hair). They were able to help me find my perfect shade for each brand, show me how to apply it on my face and they both gave me their honest opinions. They gave me extra tips and suggestions on other brands as well; which was really helpful since I have no idea how to apply on foundation. These two brand are expensive but you pay for what you get. It took me awhile to decide which one to go with since they both looked so good on me. The ladies were so patient. I've decided on the Dior foundation that came in a spray bottle, light weight & it looked natural. It looked so great on my skin. I was able to get a sample of the other things they put on my face, primer and Bobbi Brown foundation. Also, I got a birthday gift as well. Sephora in its entirety has completely lost my respect, and money! Placed an online order, didn't like the product. I'm a stickler for reading reviews and most times I will not shop online, especially if I'm not able to return locally or US mail free of charge. After careful research and reading (several times) on the back of the SEPHORA RECEIPT, it clearly stated, returns can be made by mail or Sephora stores and Sephora inside JCP! Trying to kill to birds with one stone, I drove all the way to Sephora in Overland Park Kansas located at Oak Park Mall. I tell the sales rep I have an online return and I didn't like the colors. I had 2 Kat Von items, 1 Sephora item, 1 Stila item. We get to the register she says "on we no longer have this in the store (Stila) so you can't return this" I say, the receipt states any item I'm not satisfied with can be returned to any US Sephora store in/out of JCP! She says "oh I don't know what to do, let me call my manager" She comes back and says yeah my manager said we can't return this one. I tell her I drove all this way and I don't have the time to drive somewhere else. She calls the manger, manger comes down. She then tells me, not only can they not accept the Stila item but now they also can not accept one of the Kat Von items. I'm thinking how did this go from driving here to make a return of four items, get here, one rep says I can only return 3 and now you telling me I can only return 2. I say so you're telling me, the back of the receipt (online packaging receipt) is old, outdated and misleading. The manager tells me yes the receipt is wrong then precedes to try and push the bs line "oh well our system was updated 2 months ago and hey have no way of knowing what the item really is or how much it is. I say ok but I just place this order 2 days ago, you have the box, packing slip, my email address (which clearly states what was just ordered and the bar code should tell you everything you need to know, just as it would tell you the name and amount of the order two items. Then she states the system was updated 2 weeks ago. I told her, you're not putting the items back on the shelf, you're sending them back to a warehouse, so rather you can find it out not, I'm supposed to be able to return. She smiles while shaking her head then shrug her shoulders, there's nothing we can do. I laughed, told her that's fine I'll go somewhere else. Not cool Sephora, not cool at all!!! I wasted a lot of gas, time, energy and a one hour drive, dealing with them. I immediately called customer service and was told again, no matter the product they are supposed to accept the return. The csr claimed to have submitted a complaint and that I'd here from the district manager. As of today I have not. The only reason the 1 star is there, because Yelp would not allow a review without some sort of rating. read more

Horrible service. No one EVER greets you. If you need a Sephora specific product just walk down to JC Penney, the girls are GREAT and nice and send you with samples. They also add on other products you may need to go along with what you're looking for. If you need expert makeup advice (highlighting and contouring , smokey eyes, covering hyper pigmentation... All stuff I've been there for) or need your makeup done I just go to the MAC in Nordstrom. You may have to wait a little bit but they greet you immediately and are really good at makeup. I have been to Sephora a couple times in the past but have never gotten a full face make over before! When I first arrived I received a consultation about what my skin care regimen is at home and what kind of look I was going for. I tried out a wonderful cucumber face mask and my face was cleansed and tested for my exact skin color! CJ was very helpful and friendly and gave me an amazing look! I came in on my birthday with my 3 daughters who are 7. 9, and 13. We met the most wonderful girl Kylie D. who took such great care with my 9 year old who wanted a makeover. :) So she let her pick her eye shadow, lipstick, and blush. My daughter was over the moon and Kylie is so great with kids as well as knowledgeable in answering my questions regarding lashes and makeup for myself without being pushy.
