Hard to find those anymore unless you head down Bessemer Avenue to McKnight Hardware. That place is Mom and Pop through and through. I have been going to McKnight Hardware since I moved to this neighborhood over 20 years ago and the staff rarely changes. The store is incredibly convenient and although I've never priced compared them with a Walmart or Home Depot, I'm happy to pay the price and support the OG hardware store in the area. Over the years I have seen many young men and women who started as teen helpers become cashiers and managers. The place has a family feel and the staff always knows exactly what they are talking about! It's also my go-to when I need to make some keys! I can always count on McKnight for whatever my needs are. Whether I'm looking for bird seed or glue or paint or a nail, they have it! I recently bought my weed whacker from them and I love how they are right down the street from me if I need it to be serviced, which I recently did. They used to have a pretty extensive garden nursery but it has slowed down over the years. In the early years I was even able to buy some lily pads! Lol But all of your other departments are well stocked and well priced and it's so nice to have a staff person that knows what they are talking about! There is plenty of parking right up front and it's conveniently located on Bessemer Avenue. I encourage you to patronize this place. It breaks my heart to see so many wonderful stores like McKnight Hardware shut down and give way to the big chains. We want to keep places with that Mom and Pop feel and this place deserves to continue to serve this neighborhood for years to come!

My daughter was delighted to see their little bulldog who greeted us at the door and we spent a few minutes "awwing" over and petting her. We found what we needed and came back inside to checkout. My daughter was petting the mentioned dog while I stood in line to check out. My attention was on the counter, waiting to be called when I heard a small "oof" and then noises of distress from my daughter - took a step back to find the dog had knocked her to the ground and was humping her! My daughter was crying by the time I rushed to her and had to pull the dog off of her. I scooped her up and stepped back to the register - the cashier gave me a curious glance and I told her what had happened. Now to the reason I will not be returning here - her response was a little chuckle and a "oh yeah, if you're on the ground with her that's what's going to happen" ?!?!? ZERO apologies as I'm standing there with my hysterically crying child in my arms. Had it not been for the fact that we'd already gone through the work of sifting through piles of stone and selecting what we wanted and loading it to the scale I would have walked out right then. Though I wasn't for sure where the keys are made. Within seconds, I spotted the kiosk placed near the self-checkout area. I didn't feel as if I was blocking anything or in the way of the walkways. I appreciate the easy path to finding it. Once there, the on screen instructions will guide you through the process. The price was $5.34 with tax. Note that this price was for a house key. Prices may vary for car keys and other types of keys. The entire process felt like a couple of minutes, tops. Overall, the 1-minute key machine served its purpose and saved the day! I was even offered a free 2nd key during my checkout process. I did not receive a physical receipt but they will email one after. I'll be back to gather my gardening supplies later this month. I usually shop here for my home plants and outdoor garden activities. Glad I could accomplish a last minute errand. Though I didn't require assistance from any employees today, I did greet a few on my way out.

This location has changed so so much from the "Guilford Builders" that I knew and loved to shop at for over 30 years. Inventory is now very specific to really high end, high volume, low quality construction industry. It is not a mom and pop local hardware / remodeler's / builder's supply any more. Almost nothing of the hardware is of real durable quality any more. I avoid going there unless I really have to. The only real positive for the place is the holdover from Guilford Builders is its "small wood shop" that is actually really excellent. IMHO its excellence and its existence is what brings this review up to a one star.

Was trying to find propane hoses and fittings for a Mr. Heater buddy heater... and I didn't know I…read moreneeded an associate's degree in thermodynamics to select the proper one. There were several dozen to choose from, and it was almost impossible to tell what would link together. I selected the coupling and hose I believed would work for me, and instead of making me buy it and go through a return process, they let me take it all out of the packaging and hook the heater (i had it in my car) to one of their store propane tanks to ensure it would all fit. It did, and then we conducted the transaction. This was just before a major winter storm. They were very patient with everyone who called, came in, and people like me learning on the fly, even though they were just inundated with calls and people. They do offer propane tank fill-ups here, and things like mulch, pine straw, hay, firewood, on a seasonal basis.
