Our tour guide was Trinity - she was fantastic! The multiple levels of the cave were well presented. However, the tour lets small children go on the tour and it isn't easy for them to get up and down. They slowed us down. The caves need to have an age limit in my opinion. read more

What a cool place. Amazing cave system in flat farmland in M Ohio! Clean, well organized, friendly spot reminiscent of the best of roadside attractions from yesteryear before mega corporations decided to get into the recreation business. Our tour guide was well informed and just great. Nice little gift shop w some memorabilia from long ago. This place has been around since the 1930s! Definitely a sort of go at your own risk experience, which is fine. Very natural descent assisted by a well lit path and some hand rails. Watch your step! read more

We really enjoyed our trip here! We saw a billboard on the way to Sandusky and decided to make time in our trip for the caverns and we were so glad we did! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor... the caverns were amazing! I have been to other "tourist trap" cave experiences before but Seneca made me feel like I had an actual cave experience. It is chilly so bring a jacket and a wear tennis shoes. The climb is fairly strenuous so I wouldn't recommend this for physically impaired people or babies/toddlers. (The gift shop lady also gave us a recommendation for a local place for lunch which was amazing also!) read more

There are no formations, it is essentially a dangerous climb underneath the earth. There are no rails when you descend or ascend. There apparently is a waiver that by holding your ticket and then handing it to your guide - you supposedly agree to. I would skip this unless you really have time to waste. The gift shop had a good variety of fair priced items. The history was interesting as was the info about the rainfall filling the cave, and the slower pace that it recedes. This is my second time on any cavern tour, and I was pleasantly surprised. This cavern is a great place for a visit, or to spend a couple hours doing something different. This your is not for those too old, handicapped, or in bad physical shape. There are a lot of very cramped areas along the tour that would make it very difficult. The cavern was fun and interesting for me and my teen age boys. It kept them entertained for a good 1.5 hours touring the cavern on a fun an educational tour. If you have a couple of hours for something different, stop in and go 110 feet below the surface in the Seneca Caverns. read more

The cavern was a cool 57 degrees and BEAUTIFUL. The guide was funny charming and vary knowledgeable on all subjects of the cavern. The gift shop is affordable with many different items nicknacks and other oddities to choose from. My favorite being the collection of geodes you can watch as your guide breaks open when purchased. Seneca Caverns is an hour long tour down into a giant hole in the rock under ground. It's not so much of a cave as a narrow crack formed by various layers of rock collapsing upon itself. It is the largest fractured cave in the world boasting some of the worlds smallest (one inch) stalagmites! It's an entertaining tour that doesn't have much oohs and ahhs, but very much worth driving out to see. If you or the kids like to explore this will be time worth the drive. Be prepared for lots of steep steps and low overhangs. In some places you come very close to crawling. read more

Fantastic tour guide- really knew the geology and history of the cave. Unfortunately they let two grandmothers in, one with a small babe in arms, which was a real fall hazard. in fact the grandmother while holding the baby, did slip once and if I hadn't held my child back to give them room she could have fallen into us and possibly hurt herself, the small baby, and us in a fall. They had an extra adult in their party so that grandmother should not have to enter with the child. The woman at the front desk said she was helpless to stop her which is ridiculous. The baby's near constant screaming also was distracting and another risk for others on top of making it hard to hear the guide. Risking lives for $20-30.00 is unacceptable. Great Caverns for novice and experienced. A bit of a work out and need to duck often. Knowledgeable staff on both cave formation and cave history. Cavern is cool but the humidity is high, so it is easy to work up a sweat especially with the steep stairs. read more

Family of four loved it. Kids ages 9 and 12. Best if you are an active person who can climb, crawl, and duck through narrow passageways. No handrails through most of the tour. Most steps are also all cave rocks. Take a sweatshirt and wear tennis shoes. Slippery areas and very cool underground. Tour guide was informative. read more

What a great destination off the beaton path. Great for kids and adults alike. Very informative information by staff, and very friendly. Very cool to be actually going down that far and to see an underground water channel. Good hour tour and very reasonably priced, would go again next time I'm out this way. Would not take children younger than 4 though, and if your kids do not follow your directions and are always wanting to do their own thing, might be better to go when older, because one could really easill slip the wrong way to god know where in the cavern. I took my 7 and 4 year old with the help of my wife and the kids did fine, and cant stop talking about it read more

Seneca Caverns is a fun and unique side trip from Cedar Point--I definitely recommend it if you're looking for something "off the beaten path" and enjoy learning new things. It's obvious the staff there care very much and take pride in what they're sharing with travelers. I've never been in any other caves, so I can't compare it to anything else, but I know Seneca doesn't have the flashier features of other caves. It's still very unique and well-worth the trip if you're in the area. I visited Seneca Caverns with my cousin, on our way back to Chicago from Cedar Point. We originally meant to go to Cleveland, but decided against it because of a big event there. I was so pleasantly surprised after our trip to Seneca Caverns! It's truly a unique natural attraction. They offer tours every 20 minutes to go down into caves that were caused by rock splitting; there's a river that runs below it as well. In the tour, they take you down 200 feet below the surface, and it's so neat they take you right through the basement of the tour center! You're even able to touch or taste water from a real natural spring. Our guide, Alaina, was very personable and knowledgeable. There were only 5 of us in our group, which was good because the spaces are very small. Beware, however, that it can be considered strenuous because the stairs are "natural," and of varying levels. Exiting requires some climbing; I'm relatively healthy and was slightly short of breath on the way out. It's really only good for those who are ambulatory and comfortable with confined, dim spaces. The caverns are lit with electricity, but there are some tight squeezes. I would not recommend it for children, unless they're old enough to climb up and down stairs or other things easily and they're not afraid of the dark. Older children, perhaps 6 and up, I think would be able to handle it. All in all, it was refreshing to visit something different that wasn't a chain after spending a weekend in Cedar Point and eating fast food. I really enjoyed it. read more

We really liked it here a lot, after the safari we went to the caverns. The tour took us to the bottom and could could drink some of water the ice cold water. This is an experience that I am so glad my kids had. We talked and enjoyed exploring the tavern with the guide. read more

Caves. I love them. When it's July, a million degrees out, and you want to cool off, they are a great place to be. That reason alone means all caves should get 5 stars. But I'm not rating nature, I'm rating the experience. It was... Kind of ok. The "Caviest Cave" was pretty interesting itself. Alot of climbing up and down slippery "stairways". The ceilings were pretty low in most spots. This is not somewhere you want to bring your very young children. Not even to carry. Not for the elderly, or anyone with physical limitations. You don't need to be a gymnast, but it might help. I didn't have any problems personally, but I did witness others struggling. I would highly recommend you put your pride in check if you have any sort of issues like this or with being in small spaces. I can't imagine what kind of insane nightmare it would be to have to get a stretcher in and out of this Crack. I was surprised to see port-o-pots as restroom facilities. This place has been around awhile and I would have thought actual restrooms would have been installed by now. Also, not an issue for me, but I felt it worth mentioning. The staff, generally we're pleasant. The gift shop was disappointing, typical really. I was hoping to get a souvenir that was more relevant to the location, but settled for post cards. Alot of geodes, shells, shark teeth... None of which were likely ever found here. The shells tipped me off to that. There were shells there that are really only found along the southern east coast... So... Yeah. Im not paying for that. (That being said, there is actually evidence of shells fossilized in the caves, just definitely not the type available for sale.) Also, there was alot of "Native American-ish" stuff there... The music playing, the bad incense, which was really strong, smelled like my high school ex trying to hide his weed. So yeah, super "Indian" cliche. (The guide mentioned them once, no idea what she said, I'll get to that in a minute... But using context clues, I suspect they didn't have alot of relevant history at this location.) The gem mining is fun... For kids. Not true panning. Bags of dirt, with planted objects. But hey, safer and more fun than the trash and needle ridden creek at any park these days so I say go for it. I do like that the entire property has been run by the same family since the very beginning. That was cool. The tour itself, was semi informative. The guides seem to know the Information they were given very well. They don't particularly like questions regarding formation, or oxygen levels, or the wiring they use to light the place, or anything that may stray from the que cards. They seem to like to make jokes to keep everyone happy... Which can also mean sarcasm directed at any questions not in line with thier training. I really wanted to ask if we were actually climbing around underneath the cemetery directly adjacent to the property, but having already been shrugged off and pinned as annoying, I chose not too. To bad, because that would have been really interesting, and semi creepy, to know. Most of the time the guide could not be heard. She was loud enough, but the group chatter, and the chatter and scuffle from other passing groups, made that impossible. Not thier fault of course, but maybe something they could have mentioned in the beginning. Like a "please be quiet if a guide is speaking" speech, to remind others that some people paid $17 to learn something, not just climb around in a hole in the ground and complain about the stairs. The water was clear that day, which is about all they know about it. You can drink from it. It is cold. But they have no idea what is swimming around in it, as a matter of fact, the designated water girl I asked, when I pointed it out, had never noticed before. Which was pretty sad. Cave dwelling animals, or fish, are operating on an entirely different ecosystem than what we are accustom too. Definitely something people may find interesting. I hope they look into it. There was also evidence of raccoons and other animals about at level 6, which if pretty far down... But they only seem to want to talk about bats. There is alot of room for improvement here in the guide training and educational aspect. I have seen worse of course, but I am confident they could do better here. I'd like to return in a few years, to see what has changed. read more

It said "cavern" but has tiny formations. This is a cave with low ceiling and dangerous rocks to climb on they call "steps." It was advertised as "cavern" but got a cave so disappointed BUT it is a good cave to explore. Be ready to climb and get a bit dirty. I recommend shoes that have good traction like hiking shoes, no sandals and no flip flops!!! Not good for kids under age 7 -just my thoughts. If you are over 5ft 4in tall this is going to be very uncomfortable as well for larger folks. Always look up because of low ceiling. I did like it but 3 stars because this should be advertised as a cave as there are no mature formations, but still interesting but will not go again. A fabulous place to see with family and friends! I have been on a lot of cave tours and none can compare to this. The guides clearly care a great deal about the cave and love their work - the detail in the tour was outstanding! My guide was funny and informative. Definitely recommend the "gemstone mining" after the tour. Tours leave every twenty minutes and last about an hour long. Don't forget comfortable shoes and a jacket! read more

Due to the recent (spring 2011) heavy rains, the Seneca Caverns are flooded. Although the staff attempts to put a positive spin on seeing the flooded caverns, a historical 30 year event, there is nothing to see. Only the first two of seven levels of the caverns are accessible; the third through seventh levels are filled with water. Current tours are of the first two levels with groups of four being taken a short distance beyond level two to see the top of the flooded third level, which is like viewing a flooded cellar. Although a two dollar discount is offered on admission ($12 from $14 for adults) and a "free" six dollar bag of dirt is provided for gem stone mining, it is not worth the price of admission at this time. According to the tour guide, Emily, the caverns are not expected to dry out until August 2011. If planning to tour the Seneca Caverns this summer, visitors would be advised to call ahead to learn the current extent of the flooding and how many levels are available for viewing. read more
