There is a picnic area and some bathrooms but the bathrooms are very old. I remember coming to this park as a kid and being my kids as well.

Peaceful, Beautiful, and Always Worth the Walk…read more Sheldon Marsh is one of those places that just hits every time, no matter the season. The paved trail makes it super easy for anyone to enjoy--perfect for a peaceful walk, birdwatching, or just soaking in some fresh air. It's quiet, full of wildlife, and there's always something new to catch your eye. One of my favorite parts is when the path opens up to the beach. You get this wide view of Lake Erie, and if you look out far enough, you'll spot the Cedar Point coasters in the distance. It's a cool little reminder of home--nature in front of you, thrill rides in the background. If you're up for a bit of a longer walk, you can follow the beach all the way down to the Point Retreat condos and back. It's a beautiful stretch along the water and gives you even more time to enjoy the lake breeze. And if you're a golf fan, the newly updated Sawmill Creek Golf Course runs right alongside the preserve. You might catch a few swings and even spot a bird or two between shots. Whether I'm home with family or just need a place to reset, Sheldon Marsh is always worth the visit. One of the best spots in Ohio, hands down.

The animal area now has interactive exhibits. Lots for kids to learn about wildlife, water pollution, etc. they even have a history of ship building of Lorain with some fun exhibits on display. If you would like to see nature outside the exhibit, there's plenty of that as well. It has a good amount of hiking trails that go around the park. The other cool thing is that there's a train so you can avoid walking. It's not needed since the park is fun to walk around. The train goes around the park so you can see the exhibits. One other big event is at Halloween. It has lots of mildly scary characters lurking around. This is scary enough for kids but it's not like it's so scary they crap themselves.

All play areas are visible from closest picnic area, except the bottom of the turf slide hill. 4 stars due to it being on the smaller side, but my kids really enjoyed it. Mostly stayed at the turf hill though & the tractor. Wouldn't make a long trip here as kiddos might get bored after awhile. But def nice if close for picnics, short play, or dog walks!

These wetlands are remnants of the Great Black Swamp, which once covered an area 120 miles long and 30-40 miles wide. Nature enthusiasts enjoy viewing an abundance of waterfowl and shorebirds in the park's scenic wetlands, as well as from the swimming beach and picnic areas along the lake. Our family and Apache camper began a series of visits in 1967, and East Harbor has remained a favorite. Greatly enjoyed the beaches, which now have a three-foot stone barrier to prevent erosion. We visit year round. The surrounding area has become somewhat commercialized. Lots of campers and fisher folks. In our early visits, we discussed a holiday at the State Park rather than a trip to the Outer Banks or to Hilton Head... My dear wife observed that an annual Atlantic Ocean Beach holiday was elemental to our life style.

Now I already know I'll be back, because we only explored part of it -- but what my sister, her pup, and I wandered through was fun, peaceful, and a little adventurous. At one point there was literally a giant mallard just standing in the middle of the woods like he owned the place. And then there were stairs that climb straight up the side of the mountain -- okay, hill -- but it felt like a mountain in the best way. The whole walk made me feel free. If you ever find yourself wanting a moment outside, a breath of fresh air, or just a place to wander, stop here. It's worth it.
