I don't know how this restaurant used to be, but it is currently a first rate diner. I enjoy soup for breakfast and they have at least three outstanding soups every time I go to breakfast. If you enjoy soup, try their breakfast soup it's delicious and was invented by the restaurant. The service is outstanding from the management to the servers to the cooks all the way around it's a wonderful place to eat and I hope against hope that it remains successful. read more

I was there after the lunch crowd. I ordered the coney dog and fries The fries looked and tasted as if they came from the lunch service. As if they just attempted to redip them in the oil. I walked out spending 10 dollars that I wish I would have spend elsewhere. I will not be coming back to this location again I stopped here when they first open Wayback in the day and you couldn't even tell the same. Well it's been MANY years since we have visited...for the most part it's the same look (minus a few TVs) and a whole lot less customers. The food wasn't good but not what it used to be. Nevertheless, it was still decent. Service was fast, but there really was only a handful of tables with customers so that hopefully is expected. We ordered a double cheeseburger and fries, steak and cheese sandwich and fries, fried mushrooms, a 'loose' and another fries. Oh yeah I also ordered a fish and chips dinner (had planned to get a fish sandwich with order of fries but for just a bit more the dinner comes with soup/salad, bread/pita and rice pudding (that still IS good) ... So went with that instead the fish wasn't superb, nor were the fries, but overall it wasn't a bad dinner. Oh I didn't note but the lemon rice soup was GREAT! Family that live around here just think everything has gone downhill since COVID and just not really recovered since...just going to have to to see with time if it gets better or not. Only time will tell... One thing I know is that our experience is only a little better than the avg 2 stars the Senate has on Yelp! Since Senate was sold, they changed the chili/coney sauce. Doesn't taste like Senate at all...no allspice, more tomato-y. So disappointed as I grew up going to Senate and would crave that coney sauce whenever I wasn't living in MI. Now that I'm back home, I was so glad to be able to go back to this place. I had a mild transgression and decided I wanted to try something different than the Dearborn Coney for breakfast. My husband checked Yelp and saw Phillips Diner had good reviews. When we got there, the parking lot was packed, and judging by the small building size, we figured there wasn't seating either. I'd been to Senate in the past and remembered it as a sprawling, lively coney. So I suggested (sadly, without checking Yelp first) we eat there for breakfast. When we pulled into the large parking lot, we immediately noticed there weren't many cars... at 9:30am on a Saturday. Warning sign ignored. There were only a handful of diners inside, but still we decided to dine there. The booth seemed very sticky and the space overall seemed dingy. The waitress was very personable and attentive. We split a breakfast special and it was delivered in a timely fashion. Everything was alright except the potatoes... tasted like they'd been sitting for quite a while before being reheated and served to us. Overall, Senate had nice wait staff and decent prices, but the outdated, dirty interior and old-tasting food make it a place I'll skip in the future. read more

Several years ago friends and I would eat at Senate a couple of times per week. My absolute favorite was their broasted potatoes. Tonight I decided to call and grab an order, just sounded delicious. I get to the restaurant in 10 minutes, they have the door locked and are closing because of no customers. I call and am let in to pay for my order. That's when the fun started. The lady must be the owner, she asked what I had, I told her and she very rudely says, "they should not have put them in and fried them this late." Not sure why but I apologized for their issue as I was getting out my money the waitress was walking out my neatly bagged order when the "owner" snatched the bag asked how many were in the box and told me she was now going to charge me 10$. I explained I was told 7$ on the phone and that I was not going to pay extra because she just decided the size of 1 potato was to big. This basket case literally opened the bag and the box grabbed 1 of the wedges and now she will honor the price. Seriously? This lady proceeds to yell at the entire staff because they should have asked her. What an embarrassment of a Manager, boss, owner... over a f%&@!ng potato. At this point I am not taking the food that she molested right in front of my face because she apparently thinks that 7$ isn't enough to charge for 1 effing potato. 1. In case I wasn't clear.. 1 order is 1 potato cut into quarters and it is outrageously and ridiculously priced at 7$ anyway, but apparently when she is around she is going to upcharge her customer because she thinks the single potato is to big... Ridiculous. I told her I am embarrassed for her employees as she is telling me to not tell her how to treat her employees... Completely baffled over 1 single 7 dollar potato. I've never been so disappointed. Senate used to be great! My carry out was so bad I probably will never go back. I was told 10 minutes, there was one table filled in the restaurant. I waited 30 minutes. I ordered 2 chicken pitas. The chicken was so overcooked it was hard. The lettuce was brown and wilty. Did not include the ranch which I asked for. It was the worst pita I've ever had. And it was not cheap!! If it was my business, the two cooks would be fired. They took their sweet time!! read more

This place is a quite larger place but it's never full on the weekday but the weekend it's packed. The Coney Dogs here r ok I have had better but it is still pretty fulfilling I also had the spinach pie but the top layer of it was nothing but ALOT of crust, it is definitely not worth it to get the spinach pie but the chili cheese fries were ok. This is an ok place to come eat if u want to be full and somewhat satisfying, except for the spinach pie which was pretty gross, but the waitress was very quick, on point and kept bringing us refills on our drinks. Only reason for 2 stars is because of good service. Food was terrible. Ordered the gyro salad. The gyro meat came out charred. And I got the very ends of the cucumber.. Dressing was terrible and tasted like raspberry (they claimed they make it different than other senate coneys do) they should communicate with the Dearborn location because their food is ALWAYS delicious. Will never return to the Taylor location. It makes sense why there weren't many people there on a Sunday afternoon when other places are at capacity. read more

I grew up coming to the Senate and hung out there as a teen. As an adult I have come here many times and in the last few years I have been watching a once decent place slowly die as whoever owns it has clearly given up. The final nail in the coffin came today at breakfast when we told the waitress (she introduced herself as Tammi) that our water tasted metallic and she told us that maybe it was the lead content of our home water that we were used to because we were the first people to complain about it all day. We switched to Pepsi and had breakfast. The food took quite a bit to come out and was decent when it arrived. The restaurant is absolutely filthy though and needs a degreasing from ceiling vents to the slip and slide floors. This was the first time in my life that I didn't leave a tip. read more

Why is it always so damn cold in here? I can only speak to breakfast, but the service is always slow. I have never seen more than 3 waitstaff members for the entire restaurant. Your coffee will not be refilled, so save yourself the money and pickup Tim hortons afterward. Your food will be cold within five minutes of delivery (for one, because it has been sitting under the heat lamp for 15 minutes just waiting for somebody to pick it up and secondly because it's a brisk 54 degrees in the restaurant). Overall, the cooks seems to work fast but by the time the food arrives, it's cold and dead, just like your soul will be after eating here. read more

Huge dining room. We were one of three tables at 930a on Sunday, which was a good indication of what to expect. Our waitress was extremely personable. Coffee and waters came quickly, as did our food. Coffee tasted old (not surprising given the lack of patrons). We split the big breakfast/hungry man/whatever they call it... Eggs, hashbrowns, three meats, toast. Hashbrowns were hot but didn't taste exactly fresh. All the meats were good, and the ham was far from dried out. So yeah. Overall it was just eh. This is the worst Coney Island I have ever been to in my life. I ordered scrambled eggs hashbrowns bacon and toast. My eggs were the consistency of applesauce the hashbrowns were horrible and the toast was very thin and burnt. My friend ordered a Coney Island with fries and the bun was hard as a rock and the fries were not good with many dark and black spots on them. She was able to choke her meal down but I did end up sending mine back and not ordering anything else. I looked around at the other customers entrées and none of it looked very good. The hamburger patty looked like thin frozen bulk store meat. The Greek salads did not look appealing either and they used only cheap iceberg lettuce. Avoid this place at all costs! I love their rice pudding, so I stopped and got a BLT and two rice puddings to go. The BLT was good, and the rice pudding was good but I found only two raisins in the first one. It's a greasy spoon with all the typical trimmings plus it's LOUD. Like noisy grade school cafeteria loud. Everything echos and conversations are turned up a notch so everyone can talk over the back ground noise which doesn't really work. Service was always consistant, slow and never with a smile. Plus they were always smoking over in the corner ~ yuck. The food is ok. It is what it is. It comes out hot, fast and is just what a diner serves. If it is in a bag, processed and frozen, it's on the menu. They finally take credit card. So myself and the family have been going here for years. This review is not about the food it's always good. On several occasions I have seen the head cook just yelling at other workers not just wait staff but other cooks bus boys everyone. He treats them like trash. So I took my 4 year old in today after ore school and we are sitting there watching him yell at the other cooks the waitress my 4 year old goes why is he yelling lol I ask 2 of the waitresses what his deal was he was throwing plates they said he is just like that (they used other words). So as I was cashing out I asked the manager about it and said it has to be a difficult place to work She starts raising her voice to me about how he has to yell at them to get them to do there jobs and he is great at what he does. Well if you want to run a sweat shop maybe he is but I can say this I will not be back. It's Unfortunate because we enjoy the food but I cannot support a place that treats there employees this way. We usually only go during the breakfast hours but decided to get a quick dinner . We 4 adults all place our orders everyone get their salads . Then their food all was delivered and I was told mine would be right out . Since they were all eating their main course I asked about the soup I ordered that should have been delivered with their salads. . To which I'm told " Oh I thought I brought you the soup ". Note there was a bowl on the table so I said no I'm still waiting for it . 10 more minutes go buy still no soup or a meal . Everyone's almost done eating because we stopped for a QUICK DINNER . I still don't have the soup I ordered 30 minutes ago so I ask her to pack it for to go and for a to go box for my food (and the desert I ordered for my husband ) since everyone else is done eating . I was then told Oh My God I thought I brought it . So I packed up my meal waited another 10 maybe more minutes for the soup and desert to be packaged . I don't know if the person is new since I usually only go for breakfast but it was a terrible experience . The food ended up thrown away . Never got an apology and paid $20 and tip for the meal . I don't know why this place has two stars. I came here while on an emergency trip to the area. My family has eaten here since it opened in 1937. My grandma and her parents came, my grandma took my mom and then my grandma and mom took me here often, too. There's a big booth in one corner where we used to sit, and I loved it! Visiting in 2015 is a little depressing. Almost no one was there, the building is so very very outdated, and it has this sticky feel on the tables, chairs and floor. I'm not really making this sound good, am I? Despite the poor servers struggling to handle our table of 9, they were so courteous. We got all of our food, nothing was incorrect and they brought enough refills to keep me happy. My boyfriend ordered French toast and I had a veggie omelet with hashbrowns. Whoa was that a lot of food! Everything was very tasty. It seemed like the kind of food you would get in grandma's kitchen. I think that's part of why it's so special. Plus, their fried pickles are unlike anything I've ever had. Delicious AND cheap. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but to a lot of people it's special. This Coney Island is "The Place". It even says so on the sign. Right next to the rotunda. Damn fine breakfast food. Best bet is to get something ultra-fattening like eggs, bacon, sausage, and probably a coney dog for good measure. This place has been here since Detroit had suburbs. Wow was I ever shocked to see how downhill this place has gone! Senate Coney Island used to be a Taylor favorite of mine..one of my 'go too' spots...The restaurant was so dirty, the booths, the tables, the floors. Even upon entering the first thing I noticed was how dirty the door handle and the glass door was! I understand why no one was there eating. When we came in we could smell the odor of paint or some kind of paint thinner? I asked the waitress if somebody had just painted? she told me the owner was painting right now in the back! The smell of paint was overpowering to the point where we would have to leave if they did not stop. The smell did subside after I spoke with the waitress about how strong it was. I was really surprised that they would be painting with that much fumes in the restaurant while people were eating. The food also was not so good, very mediocre and barely warm. French fries were still very good. Overall I don't think we will be back to Senate Coney Island if it even stays open for business. Today I went for lunch and the waitress were very loud talking negativity about our country. Politics should not be discussed loudly in a restaurant. Later the waitresses and the cook start arguing with the hostess. The hostess said she didn't want to even be there and the staff said good we don't want you here.
