I have gone to Senape's (locals frequently say it as though it was "Snaps) since childhood growing up in the Hazleton area. It is spelled pitza, not pizza. The place has tile floor, so it's noisy with voices echoing and nothing to muffle sounds. This makes it fun to eavesdrop and to join in friendly conversations. Customers are cheerful toward each other during all of my visits. We frequently see folks we know. Typical decor for a pizza shop. Deb was our waitress the last 2 visits, and she's terrific, efficient and friendly. We ordered a large round pie with schamutz cheese. Delicious! Perfectly seasoned tomato sauce. Right amount of cheese. We shared a half pitcher of birch beer on tap (aka draft). You have to wait for your freshly made to order food. It is so worth it! Street parking is fine but pay attention all of the one way streets. Our cost was well under 20 bucks, including a good tip. Great establishment!! read more

On my top 3 list for best pizza of all time. It's a small family owned local pizza dive. The deep dish is phenomenal.

This place has been a local favorite for years, but lately it has consistently gone downhill. Tonight my husband wanted to go there, so I reserved a table. When we got there, the waitress left us standing in the hallway and wouldn't even make eye contact. After 15 minutes she asked if we had reservation to which we responded yes. She seated us at a table and proceeded to wait on the other 5 tables, including one seated 10 minutes after us. When my husband flagged her down to ask if she could at least take our drink orders, she became irate and screamed at him that she was the oy waitress on. We proceeded to walk out as she continued to scream at him. Absolutely the worst service ever. I will never return nor will our extended family. read more

Local color? This place has it! Tucked into a residential side-street this joint has been serving up drinks and food for close to a century. Walking inside is like a time-warp back to 1958 (or prior). The food was great and pretty cheap. Old school place, old school pizza. I try to eat here once every 6 months. Get a tray of the square extra scamutz, a blend of mozzarella and provolone cheese. If you're lucky you'll get a piece where the cheese has melted over the crust and get a little crispy. This pitza is so good I rarely ever from getting anything else on the menu. Went here after hearing good things and seeing reviews and was not impressed. The restaurant is ok seating wise. We ordered anti pasta salad, pizza, and beer. The only thing that came correct was the salad. The pizza has a good crust but didn't care for the sauce. The mushrooms were also canned which was a big disappointment for the pizza. Not an expensive place. If the items were correct it would be good but am not planning to return. read more

As far as the pizza/pitza is concerned, the bakery and tavern are much farther apart the their geographic location just around the corner from each other would suggest! However, they are both excellent - albeit different - establishments. Senape's Tavern is a bar/restaurant (see: http://pitza.com) with awesome pizza as well as a great menu of appetizers, sandwiches and hoagies, salads, pasta dishes, etc. Set your clock back 30 years - in a good way! - before entering into this pitza heaven. The signature "tavern pitza" is wonderful -- a medium crust pizza with a blend of cheese containing scamotz.

I had supper here last night with the family. Our reservation was for 4:30 and the place quickly filled up. I hadn't been here in three years and nothing has changed. We started with an antipasto which was simple but good. Thick slices of homemade bread accompanied it. It took about an hour for the Scamutz with sausage to come out of the kitchen. It was delicious. There was only one waitress working the floor. The place has a one room dining area that can get rather noisy. The loud mouth Democrat next to our table talked politics all night. I wish people like that would just stay home. The next time I come here I'll seriously consider bringing earplugs. read more

The locals seem to love this place, but it's just another Hazleton dive. The food is mediocre at best (the square pizza with extra Scamutz (known as Scamorza to everyone outside of Hazleton) is good, but I wouldn't step foot in the place sober.) There's always a line out the door to get in, and the service is beyond horrendous. There are tons of wobbly tables packed into a small dark room, about 12 chair styles, and no two table clothes alike. (Unless you count the fact that they all have holes, tears, stains, and cigarette burns on them.) You can still see the lines on the curtains from the packages they came in, and they've been hanging for over 15 years. If hole in the wall dives are up your alley, you'll probably love it. If not, just get your pizza to go. And do yourself a favor - skip the antipasto and order one from Alta or Two Guys instead. read more

The biggest mistake I ever made regarding a pizza place ever! I only get pizza here once a month or so but the snapatiser is to die for. Gives you a little of everything. White with black olive and onion, meatball, steak and cheese, Romano, pepperoni, and tavern. Soooo good. Hours are a little shaky but you just work around it. read more

Senape's Tavern is a small place that you drive right by if you weren't looking for it. Having been born in Hazleton and moving out of state it is nice to come back to a place that hasn't changed probably since it was built. Fair warning if you plan on going to dinner on a Friday night make a reservation the tables go very fast. Lots of local families have made it a tradition and I can't blame them. Expect the servers to be very busy and if your in a hurry do not go. This is not a bad thing they just literally do so much business in the 5 1/2 hours they are open it's crazy. We started out with a pitcher of beer and a plate of meatballs which were very good, moved on to an antipasta which was a very good size and delicious, and for our meal we had the Roman round meatball pitza and a Schamutz square pitza and yes I spelled that correctly! Those are not misprints or typo's. Overall we loved the food, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere brings you back to when Hazleton was a lot different and in my opinion a lot better. Got a square pizza or as they would say PITZA with onions and sweet peppers and a large antipasta. Well the Salad could of used some work but it still wasn't bad. The pitza makes up for it..
