I knew this place wouldn't make it for whatever reason everything that goes in this location doesn't last very long it's on the backside of the Shoppes. They should've left well enough alone when it used to be an Irish pub same owner I believe and for whatever reason they decided to go with this Mexican Cantina that was just never full of people or really caught on. The prior Irish pub used to have some music and dancing I can't remember maybe on Thursdays or something and it was pretty popular so why they made the change I don't know but now it's permanently closed. Let's get something in here that's well liked and tolerated by everybody that can last a few years instead of every other year there's something new struggling to make it go. Their street tacos and food platters weren't bad and the beer was always cold, it was a quiet place to hide out but I guess that was its downfall sometimes you could be the only one in there or two or three other people and that won't pay the bills in a location that's known for high rent. read more

Went for Taco Tuesday and left really disappointed. Myself, four friends, and our kids (a party of 8) showed up for lunch because the posted hours say they open at 12pm. When we arrived, the restaurant was completely closed. There's just no consistency with the hours, and it left all of us hungry, frustrated, and needing to find another place to eat. Checked this place out on a Friday night and it was pretty empty, considering there's a live dj playing all night. It's located at the Shoppes with easy parking at night. Music was loud but decent so expect to speak louder if you wanna chat. There's a billiards table, though you need put in $2 quarters to play. Chicken Nachos were good and not heavy. I haven't been to this restaurant since it changed from Limericks Tavern to Semillas Cantina. Coming in to the restaurant i noticed that the lights were still really dim, a little hard to see inside. It took a couple minutes for someone to come for us to be sat. There were no host/hostess at the stand. We decided to sit towards the back where they had a large screen up with the football game on. We were there for the happy hour because the prices looked decent and were excited for some food items. The first two items on the menu which we wanted, Elotes and Chicharron, were all out. A little disappointing to be honest. We ended up ordering a few margaritas, michelada, street tacos, tostada ceviche, calamares, taquitos and the chimichanga. Drinks were brought out sporadically and then a couple were forgotten. Actually, we asked the server and she stated she sees the order on her electronic pad, but the ticket for some reason didn't print. I guess it only printed 1/2 the order? It was a little frustrating through we had wait a bit for our server to come back around to let them know that we were still missing drinks. A few minutes passed and for some reason the bartender had to come to our table and confirm which drinks we were missing. It was very disorganized. Finally, food started to come out starting with the calamares.. and it was totally disappointing. Itlooked and tasted like it was the leftover crumbs at the bottom of whatever was fried before hand. The ceviche we ordered was fish, and it was super fishy. We ate 1/2 of one of the 4 we got. The chimichanga was full of beans.. like it must have been filled extra to make it look full because that was all we tasted with every bite. Fortunately, the tacos were decent and the taquitos tasted good, just the portion of the taquitos were so small. The same size tortilla was used as the street tacos. Usually, the size is larger, but maybe thats only in other restaurants I've eaten at? After receiving the check, we noticed there was an error in pricing. The calamares was showing up regular price rather than the happy hour price. On top of that, we were automatically charged 20% gratuity, which they didn't really earn in my opinion. I originally asked for a table for 6, only 5 of us were able to make it. If that was me serving, I would've not have included the gratuity since that last person didn't stay. In the end, my experience wasn't great nor even good. Unfortunately, it was a $150 error and I won't be returning here as there are many other places in Chino Hills that offer better food and better service. read more

I've been here a couple of times now and the food has been mid each time. The chips and salsa are just ok, not the best or worst. I got the taco tour and the tacos were super dry and flavorless. I had to ask for consommé for the birria taco, I ended up dipping all the tacos in it to get some flavor and moisture into them. I thought I'd give it another chance just in case it was a fluke, but I probably won't end up coming here again. There are so many other good Mexican restaurants I'd rather go to. read more

We ordered the chicharron with guacamole and were pretty disappointed - what we got looked like gas station pork rinds and the guacamole had zero flavor. For $15, it just wasn't worth it. The complimentary chips were stale and the salsa was watery and bland. We also ordered the molcajete and asked for medium-rare beef, but it came out completely overcooked. The restaurant itself is spacious, but noticeably empty and now we understand why. On a positive note, the service was solid. Our waitress was attentive and kind, which we appreciated. Do not come and eat at this place. I ordered beef taquitos and they didn't have any, so I ordered the potato taquitos and they were green with a lot of oil coming out after each bite. This restaurant was empty and we attributed that to it being earlier in the evening. Not the case. Server made two mistakes regarding the menu. Drinks were so light on alcohol our Margaritas tasted like sour fruit punch. The guacamole had no salt and no lime flavor whatsoever. The tortilla chips tasted suspiciously like day old grease that was reused for frying. Karaoke in the back was so loud that it made conversation nearly impossible and eight large green TVs displayed bloodied men in a cage fighting match. We will NEVER be back. I used to love coming to this location back when it was Limericks. It was a fun local spot to get drinks and dance with friends. Now that it's Semillas Cantina it seems a little lost in what it's trying to be. The name Cantina means it's more like a restaurant and bar combo. From the experience though, it reads as a primarily a sit down establishment meant to have a club-like atmosphere. There's the long bar in the middle of the building with a di booth at the back wall facing the restaurant with tables taking up a majority of the floor space. The music is SO loud and the place is EMPTY. It doesn't make sense to the have music be so loud when most of your patrons are sitting down to eat. There's no room to hold conversation in the main area. It was really awkward to try and talk with the rest of the dinner party over the music. The waitress was nice and let us know what drinks were most popular and recommended her favorites. They l gave us complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was flavorful without being super spicy. I'm not sure what brand of chips they use but they were great, not super salty. We didn't try any of the food as we thought it would be more of bar-like experience based on the name and the music coming from the outside. It did take a while to get our drinks, which was a little annoying since the place was incredibly empty and they had two people tending the bar. The drinks were good. I tried the cucumber margarita and ordered it with no spice, but it came to the table with a chili rim. I didn't send it back as it came with a straw so it wasn't ultimately a big deal. My friends ordered the other margarita flavors and also said they were good. My favorite thing is the aesthetic of the restaurant. I love the name and the hand painted art they have on the walls. However, that's the only thing I really enjoyed. The rest of my experience was average. I don't really see myself coming back any time soon. read more

Third visit to Semillas for me, 2nd for my wife, unfortunately there won't be a 4th. Mother's day, afternoon, 2 of us sat at the bar ordered 2 drinks each, chips n guac, 6 taquitos for me, Chile Relleno for my wife. She had 1 bite and it was lacking seasoning, had way too much sauce, and the only flavor was an abundance of the char from the peppers. My taquitos, if you can call them that were the tiniest things I've ever seen. I honestly think they forgot to put filling in them. If you took the filling from 1 Street taco and divided it up 6 ways that would have been double the amount of filling of any of the taquitos I had. Speed of service was average. Ambiance was cool if there were more than 8 people in there. I really hate writing negative reviews as I want all to see restaurants succeed, but Semillas needs a complete revamp - call John Taffer to help. Id start with fresh ingredients, cut your menu in half and make 15 items absolutely amazing vs 35 items that are sub par. Lastly, you need to retrain your staff, the bartender forgot a drink for another table, how? It was dead. She also saw my wife's dish had not been touched, she should have asked if something was wrong with it, taken it off our bill or at least offered us a box to take it home. Time to revamp your business strategy, or cut your losses and try something else, sadly. This was our second visit here and because the first was so terrible (also on an empty early-evening and during their soft-opening on Halloween) I didn't review it then and decided to give them another chance. We stopped by this evening at 5:30 for a quick dinner. The bar had 7 people there but that was it for the whole place so we were seated in a booth pretty quickly. The tables were empty so it seemed like things would move along...that they did not. Pros: Waitress was initially courteous, view from our booth was good, it was quiet, A/C was working, Patrona Tacos were decent, Governador tacos were good, waitress gave a small discount for not sharing the happy hour info with us (after I asked her) since we would have just ordered from there. Cons: Never told about happy hour so I had to go to the hostess who found a little sign/stand from a random table and handed it to me, waitress disappeared for long periods of time, pollo tacos were dry & made w/ stuff I asked to leave off, salsa was spilled on my seat and floor when food was brought and it took a while for it to get cleaned, had to ask 2x for napkins cuase you only get one per person and they didn't bring them the first time I asked so I could clean up the salsa on booth, asked a 2nd time for more chips cause they weren't brought out, waitress acted like it was our fault we didn't know about happy hour then said there should have been a sign on the table (this was 5mins before it was to end), took a while to get the check and get out of there. I'm giving them 2 stars for the 2 different types of tacos we ate being decent (but greasy) and took off 3 stars for the lack of customer service (in so many areas). I really wanted to like this place but I can't. They either don't train their employees or they just don't care. Either way, sounds like the bar is the only reason to visit. read more
