I took a private pasta class for a friends birthday, with chef Ian, and it was lit. The class started with wine, cheese, and crackers then we got right to work. We made the dessert first tiramisu, so it can chill while we cooked. Next we made our cheese for the ravioli and salad. Ian was very knowledgeable on the process and kept it fun with the instructions, even had some hip hop playing as we cooked. The food was delicious! I was too tipsy to get the full chicken marsala recipe but I will be back for another class. The experience was about 3 hours including eating at the end, worth the $100. Selfup is a great cooking experience in NYC! I did the Italian Dinner with Tiramisu finale with Chef Danny. The class was entertaining, informative, and delicious! We started out with some soft drinks, wine, cheese and crackers. Then we put on our chef aprons and got to work! The first dish we made was our tiramisu. They taught us some of the history of the dessert and we assembled our lady fingers, mascarpone, and topped with espresso powder and shaved chocolate. We put our tiramisu in the refrigerator to enjoy at the end of the meal. Next we made mozzarella balls! Chef showed us how to pull, twist and roll our cheese. This was a fun step! We later enjoyed the cheese in a salad with tomatoes, artichoke, and mixed greens. We also learned how to make marsala sauce through an entertaining and informative demonstration. Chef Danny showed us an easy way to cut an onion! Then we made pasta dough! This was the most involved step as we mixed and rolled the dough. The flour was a mix of semolina and other flours. We made our own ravioli as well and used pasta machines to roll out the dough and then shape them with ricotta inside. We also made our own fettuccini pasta using the machines as well! After this we had a little break while the finishing touches were put on the meal. The fettuccini was served with a pesto sauce and the ravioli with a marinara sauce. The marsala was served with chicken, and I think vegetarian options were available too. The chefs were very knowledgeable about other kitchen skills and equipment and answered any questions that others in the group had. Overall, it was a great experience and would highly recommend the Italian or other cooking classes! read more

Excellent, excellent experience with Selfup from the moment we walked in until we were leaving for the night. My friend and I were here for the Italian Dinner with Tiramisu finale cooking class. There was hors d'oeuvres, red and white wine, and beverages for us. The kitchen area was immaculate. Chef Danny was funny and kept us laughing all night. You can tell that they all love what they do. I love to cook and Italian cuisine and tiramisu are a few of my favorites. I was excited to add a few more recipes to my collections. It is easy to read a recipe from a book but to experience an in-person cooking class is much more fun. We learned how to make tiramisu, mozzarella cheese, chicken Marsala, ravioli, and fettuccine all from SCRATCH! This class was simply AWESOME and I didn't want it to end! The music was great. I took a cooking class on 4/4 and had the honor of working with Chef Oliver. The class was fun, informative, and easy to follow along. We were broken up into two tables and I must say, I had a blast with my group! We learned how to make tiramisu, ravioli, and homemade past noodles from scratch! This class would be suitable for a date night, girls night, and even family. There was a 10 y/o in my group and we all had a blast! I cannot recommend this class enough. I've never had so much fun at a cooking class before going to SelfUp's pasta making class. To clarify hubby and I took the pasta making & tiramisu class. It was so up our alley because we LOVE pasta and prefer tiramisu at all times. This was the first class that was hands on. We made the dough, the pasta and the mozzarella, from scratch. In the past (with other facilities it seems everything is premade). Not at SelfUp! You get your hands into the whole process. Heads up, they offer wine (red and white). It definitely helps when you'd like to have a lil wine with your pasta dish. This class was hands down the best for date night. We took the group class and I know there are private classes also available. I would definitely recommend taking the group class because you get to meet some really interesting people. The class we took was located in Manhattan. Near the Wall Street area which is totally accessible via the subway and driving. Parking wasn't too bad in the area given it was on a weekend. We arrived early enough to make sure we parked before the class got started. The instructor was top notch! Chef Danny answered all our questions, gave perfect demos, and helped each and everyone of us in the pasta making process. The class was fun (not stuffy), he played music, asked us what we liked and figured out what we were comfortable with cooking wise. Hands down the best cooking class. Perfect for date night, girls night out, bestie hangs, or even parents and kid hang night (a dad treated him daughter to a class, it was so cute). Woah!!!! This was for sure one of the best, if not the best, date nights I have ever had!!!! It definitely blew my mind. What a great class, what an awesome team, what a delicious table of refreshments, what a delicious variety of food, it was all above PERFECTION!!!!! Me and my boyfriend had a blast at Self Up. We met really awesome people, and most importantly, we learned a few tips for cooking, ((although I had considered myself very very talented in the kitchen, not so much anymore. Lol)) and learned how to make pasta from scratch, also learned how mozzarella and tiramisu are made and tried making them as well, as we came for the "Italian Dinner with Tiramisu Finale". Danny, the Chef, was so incredible talented, super funny and soooo warm and welcoming. His vibe definitely lighted up the room and the way he teaches made learning super fun, and so interesting!!!! His team was so friendly and helpful as well, and so soooo fun!!! Shoot out to Chef Mark, who was so happy the whole night and helpful to me and my boyfriend, definitely another beautiful soul!!! They all made our experience so much better than we ever expected. One would think, "why would I pay to cook when I can just go to a restaurant?", let me tell you... it's worth every single penny, you'll end up mesmerized and in love with the whole process!!!!!! We now want to go take every class they offer and want to get ourselves a pasta machine so that we can put into action what Chef Danny thought us. Me and my bf had such a great time at this cooking class! We came in for the Italian cooking class, which included fresh mozzarella salad, chicken Marsala, pesto fettuccine, ravioli, and a lovely tiramisu. Chef Danny lead our session, and he was so friendly and interactive. I think chef Danny and his sous chefs coordinated very well, and there was never a dull moment. During the class, chef Danny showed us a few knife techniques, how to make fresh mozzarella and pasta, and made sure to explain what was going in each dish and why. We were pretty hands on for a cooking class of ~20-25 people. We probably "made" 30% of the meal ourselves. Everyone had the chance to work with their hands without needing to wait for so long. There was also a really nice social element to the class. Most people came as a couple/groups, but seating is shared at multiple tables so you were able to socialize for a few minutes in between cooking lessons. Definitely OK to come as an individual too. We met some really kind, interesting people during our class. Overall, really loved this class for a date night. Perfect mix of hands on fun and socializing. Fun, we got this as a gift and joined 2 other couples- so there were a total of 6 of us. The class wasn't really a true cooking class as we just made sushi rolls. We had a nice time and the chef was very knowledgeable. It was very low key and relaxed class compared to other cooking classes we've attended. (Taste Buds, Sur La Table) They didn't have avocado, which 1 couple was upset about. Sushi has a lot of avocado so it did seem odd. Otherwise they offered a variety of proteins to try, tuna, cooked salmon, crab, and shrimp. They also offered wine and had an assortment of sodas/seltzers. Overall it was good! read more

I'm not sure what I was expecting but after reading that this was a cooking class I kind of expected a real cooking class instead I would call this a cooking demonstration class because that's what it is. I do cook a lot at home and have followed some really flavorful recipes before so this "class" did not teach me anything I would personally use at home in my own kitchen. First we were taught how to make tiramisu, but only partly all the ingredients were already prepared for us, and we were just putting it all together. I will say after trying this I do not think that it was crème fraîche that was used. It tasted more like regular whipped cream, we were taught how to make ravioli but again we were only making the dough and the filling was already premade for us. They did add lemon zest to the filling which I really enjoyed but when it was served it was a plain tomato sauce that you could tell was not made from scratch, and it was also cold, next we were shown how to make marsala mushrooms I don't want to say chicken marsala because we were not taught that we were taught only about the mushroom portion. I felt the mushrooms were cooked on too high of a heat. Sadly, I only was able to try one, but it was good. The chicken, however, was regular chicken that was cooked separately pleased in marsala sauce, cook together with the mushrooms, for any amount of time to help the dish. We also made mozzarella that was actually the first thing we did which was fine but again not something that was made from scratch. We were given the tools to combine it overall, I will say I did not learn anything new, but it was a nice experience to have. I just hope that if anybody took the class, hoping to take some skills home that they do some more research before creating these recipes themselves. read more

My friends and I came here on a Saturday night for their Italian class and it was a lot of fun! The space is surprisingly big and fit about 25 of us in a class. It felt like we were on the set of a cooking show. Chef Danny and his team really brought the energy and made it interactive but still educational! We made ravioli, fettuccini, salad with mozzarella balls, a mushroom/chicken dish, and tiramisu. So much fun to learn how to make mozzarella and pasta from scratch!! I went to this location for the Italian dinner with Tiramisu finale class, and I had a blast! Chef Y with his très mignon fils/sous chef, Elias, were a blast to work with! They taught us a lot about making pasta, the history, and various cooking techniques. The folks at Setup were the perfect hosts, chefs, and instructors for what turned out to be a really fun evening. You'll get the opportunity to learn about - and make, - a variety of courses. We started by preparing our desserts (tiramisu), then cheese, and finally a couple of different pastas. Each dish came with a brief history lesson, as well as opportunities for hands on learning. We had the chance to shave chocolate, stretch cheese, knead dough, fill and shape ravioli...lots of interactive sessions! Even with a group of well over 20 people, Selfup was able to keep things organized and engaging. Throughout the evening, Selfup also provided refreshments, including soft drinks, wine, and some hors d'oeuvres. But the four-course meal itself consisted of the food we made! With (a lot of) help and finishing touches from the chefs. Just don't expect to eat dinner until well into the three-hour class, as it takes time to get from the interactive learning to the final dishes being ready. The space itself is modern and clean, though it did run a little warm with so many people and so much food preparation going on. All in all, this was one of the more engaging and elaborate cooking classes I've taken. Lots of fun as a group activity, and as a chance to pick up some kitchen skills for the future! read more

The Italian class was a lot of fun! Chef Danny was funny and we learned several chef tricks, such as how to crack an egg with one hand, which I have always admired as a magic trick only chefs can do. Now I know the trick but still need more practice. There was a table with lots of soft drinks and wine, as well as cheese and crackers. That was a nice touch and helped people relax and have a good time. We first learned how to make a tiramisu. We put layers of cheese and lady fingers and chocolate into an individual cup for our dessert for later. Then there was a demonstration of how to make mozzarella cheese, which was interesting. I don't think I will be doing that at home, but still interesting to see. Next, we learned how to make a salad dressing, which was the best dressing I've ever tasted: mustard, oil, vinegar, herbs, salt, garlic, etc. Then we learned how to make chicken Marsala. What was interesting was the chef used chicken thighs, which I normally would not use, but the result was a very tender and tasty piece of chicken! I would definitely make the chicken at home. Finally, we learned how to make fresh pasta: cheese raviolis and fettuccine. It was quite an impressive demonstration. By then, people were really having fun. We had quite a feast at the end of all the food that we learned how to cook. Such a great time! I would definitely recommend this cooking class as date night, team building event, and family bonding time. I heard that Self Up recently started in NYC but have been popular in Boston. Give them a try. This class was in a building in the Financial District on the third floor, but totally comfortable with nice clean restrooms. read more

This review is for the Italian Dinner with Tiramisu Finale hosted by Chef Danny. It was their first time conducting Sunday classes and it was very intimate compared to their usual, larger classes. Only 6 people so we all got to feel like we had the full experience of making an Italian dinner and dessert. And the best part is that there is no cleanup for us after! The meal for the night included a charcuterie selection, salad, fresh ravioli, fettucini, Chicken Marsala w/ mushrooms, and a tiramisu. There were also beverage options of water, soda, red wine, white wine, and flavored La Croix hard seltzers. The meals that we got to cook were the Mozarella for the salad, both portions of pasta from scratch, and the tiramisu. The food is communal so be aware of that before booking. I'd recommend this to people going in a pair or a group. Chef Danny & Chef Shamir really made this experience memorable. It's a very fun experience that everyone should do at least once. read more

I made a reservation a week in advance for their Italian Dinner with Tiramisu finale on a Friday night. I decided to bring my friend for her birthday and this was the perfect low key and delicious way to celebrate. There was a table of charcuterie and refreshments with alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks for your pleasure. Our session only had two other couples with us, for a total of 6 people. Everyone gets an apron and it's game time! Chef Ygael took his time explaining the different ingredients, their alternatives and why certain ingredients were used over others. We started off making our tiramisu as it needed time to set, before making fresh mozzarella balls for our salad. Pasta making was definitely the highlight of the night (next to actually eating everything, of course). We had a blast prepping our dough and making it into ravioli and fettuccini. Chef Ygael was operating as a one man show with no assistants but he skillfully cooked, taught, and entertained despite being so short staffed. This is a great cooking class for dates and events! Leading a cooking class of 11 takes time, leadership and tons of collaboration. Chef Danny B delivered with great staff and instructions to guide us on our Italian cooking experience. Little bites and refreshments were provided to offset our hunger while cooking. We started off with the tiramisu, shifted to the marsala sauce, and then to the pasta making! Very enjoyable, this made me want to invest in a pasta maker myself! Though we made the ingredients from scratch, the actual cooking was left to the chefs which I am very grateful for. The entire dinner consisted of salad, ravioli, chicken marsala, fettuccine, and dessert. Everything was fairly delicious. My one complaint is that the fettuccine was more salty than I preferred. This is great for couples, and groups. Possibly for the individual but I'd say there should then be a specific individual focused class since everyone that was there was a couple or group. read more
