So nice we came here twice! I normally never try to repeat a restaurant while on vacation but this place was special. They serve some really delicious Malaysian and Asian dishes that make it a popular choice at all hours of the day. The two dishes we were mesmerized by were the Hainanese chicken and laksa curry. Both together make a great dinner combo. The chicken was really tender and the rice infused with the chicken umami was so delicious. Coupled with a tangy dipping sauce and a few cucumbers to cleanse the pallette, it hit all the right notes. The laksa curry was the star dish for us here. The soup is thick and savoury. It's got the right amount of heat to warm you up yet you can't help drinking more spoonfuls of that broth. There was good amounts of seafood hiding underneath the surface of the deep yellow broth along with the noodles that held up their own. Some things to note about this place: 1. the place doesn't look glorious but it seems like they have been filling happy tummies for a long time 2. you go up to order and pay first then they will bring the food to your table when it is ready. 3. Feel free to help yourself to tea at the store counter 4. Nevermind a few flies that may be buzzing around the restaurant. It really doesn't detract from the food they are serving. We highly recommend this restaurant to those that are looking for a good meal at a great value.

Laksa has now been added to my culinary vocabulary! It shall be had and repeated often, thanks to the quality serving I received at Selera. Unassuming from the outside but jam packed on the inside. Boy if this place were in SF, there would easily be a 45 minute wait. Lucky you Auckland. Having never sampled Malaysian cuisine, I hopped on the band-wagon and ordered what everyone else was getting. It seemed to be the restaurants specialty as several people were eating laksa in the dining area. A bowl that looked like something out of Super Size Me, came out piping hot filled with thick noodles, plump shrimp, scallions, and bread crumbs all settled in a spicy coconut curry. It reminded me of Tom Yum. Yummy! I ordered the seafood laksa, requesting only shrimp. Yes you can do that; one in our party ordered squid only. For you veggie folks they also have a vegetable option, which I must say looked AHmazing! For those who enjoy a milder flavor, go with the Auckland spicy. For those who enjoy a little heat proceed with the authentic spice, it's aromatic, warming and coating on the pallet. Spring rolls are a weakness of mine, so I couldn't resist ordering. They come in a pair with a home made sweet & sour sauce. They are juicy vegetable roles, crunchy but not fried to a crisp and hot right out of the pan. The sauce was absolutely perfect! This turned out to be a scrumptious hot meal for under $20.00! No real complaints here though they do need to fix the front door. It kept staying ajar and as winter has suddenly arrived here that cold breeze was not welcome. They offer hot tea self service at the front counter. They also ask that you pay for your meal after ordering instead of after dining. I will most certainly return to try another laksa, along with other items on their menu. Everything smelled delicious and was ever so mouthwatering.

Chicken Laksa had a good amount of shredded chicken.

We went to Selera for a Sunday lunch. It is always packed so be prepared to wait or share a table with others. It is really fast paced and has a somewhat traditional feel. We both had the laksa. One chicken and one seafood. The laksa broth was well seasoned and tasty. A real depth of flavour and spicy. The chicken laksa had a good amount of chicken and noodles and the seafood laksa has squid, fish balls, crab nuggets and prawns. Definitely one of the best laksa's in Auckland.

Vegetable Laksa: seemed like their signature dish; flavourful coconut broth with egg noodles and vegetables

No other restaurant I passed was as popular as Selera, and its ratings are well-deserved. Their standard routine is that your order and pay at the counter before receiving your food, which seems strange but allows for the flow of diners to keep moving. Warm tea (!) and water are self-serve. I waited only a couple of minutes between grabbing my tea and having my dish arrive. I ordered the vegetable laksa and was delighted to find the broth not overwhelmed with coconut milk. The cabbage, tomato, and bean sprouts were all fresh and cooked evenly. As other reviewers described, the portion size is huge and a great value at $15. I can't speak much about their other dishes (many others I saw got stir fried noodles) but loved the laksa and had a great first time!

Ordered the Mummy chicken and it was delicious. Sweet and sour pork was also good. Daughter ordered this. Broccoli steamed with soy sauce as veggie. Two drinks. Altogether $40 bucks. Place is a real Newmarket institution. You will hear many dialects in this place. I think it is good because real Malaysians run it.

I am a huge laksa fan and Selera has one of the best laksas in Auckland (I can't decide between Selera, Mamak and KK...). Their laksa is a massive bowl of delicious hot, creamy, spicy soup filled with noddles, crunchy vegetables, tofu and a boiled egg (this is the vege laksa). It is an extremely large portion and I have found sharing a bowl with two of their tasty, fluffy roti is more than enough for two people. Unfortunately more than once I have gone in and been disappointed as they have run out of laksa (I tried really hard not to cry). I've also had the Beef Rendang which is not as dry as other places and has a bit of sauce to it. It isn't too spicy (on the mild side even) and has a lovely mix of spice flavours. The Mee Goreng is tasty and had the perfect amount of sauce so the noodles aren't too dry however it is a bit on the spicy side. The roti is unbelievably good, light, flaky and delicious and only $2.50 a piece (bargain).

Vegetarian laksa ($12) - ideal on a winters night
    Alex D.

What's better than a steaming bowl of noodles in a warming, curry coconut broth on a cold wintery night. Not much, in my book. The laksa at Selera is huuuuuge. I opted for the vegetarian version, which came with plenty of broccoli and fried tofu but I must admit, the seafood version look pretty good too. As others have mentioned the decor leaves a lot to be desired and seating is limited but, for me the portion to prices ratio more than makes up for this. Plus they have complimentary tea. With Winter well on it's way, I am looking forward to many more nights slurping noodles at Selera in the not too distant future.

    Beef Rendang with Coconut Rice

Dinner for $17? Yes please!!! After reading consistently great reviews about Selera, my sister and I finally decided to try it out, as it is also close to the cinemas on Broadway. Selera is a very casual eatery, serving no alcohol and you order at the counter, despite been given menus when you sit down. At first, this was weird and confusing for us, but the food made up for it! I ordered the Beef Rendang ($14) and Coconut Rice ($3). I had never tried coconut rice before, but fellow Yelper, Anastacia O, highly recommends it in her review, so I just knew I had to try it! The Beef Rendang - wow, what a huge portion! It was incredibly tasty - full of flavour with just the right amount of spice and the best thing about it was that I had it for lunch the next day! The coconut rice was just as delicious and I would highly recommend it. My sister ordered the Kon Low Mee ($13.50) consisting of pork, noodles and a yummy sauce. It was also a huge portion and bursting with flavour. She had enough for leftovers the next day too! We visited again a few weekends' ago and while I wanted to be a bit more adventurous, I couldn't go past ordering the Beef Rendang and Coconut Rice combo that I enjoyed so much the first time. My sister however went with the fried rice with prawns (so good) and guess what!? - we both had leftovers for the next day! We also ordered a side of their Fried Buns (6 pieces for $7) for dessert - served with a condensed milk and sweet puree sauce. Perfect way to end the night! As well as serving tasty meals, they also have a 'help yourself' tea station. Jugs of hot tea to accompany your meal and you can have as many cups of it as you like. Canned cold drinks (some don't have English names which we tried) and a water cooler are also available. Service both times has been quick and efficient and you do not have to wait long for your meals. There is always a short wait for a table (you cannot book), but I ensure you that once you try a meal at Selera's, waiting for a table won't even matter.

Everyone who says Selera do the best laksa in town are 100% right! I went there tonight absolutely ravenous after work and felt like a hearty curry. I ordered the vege laksa minus the egg and a roti. The portion size is massive and fantastic value. Super flavoursome broth served piping hot with a good ratio of veges (cabbage, broccoli and beansprouts) and noodles. Roti crisp and not oily which was great. Fed 2 people for $10 each and left feeling content. Will definitely be back. Taste: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Must try: laksa Instagram: @oliviaroundtown Website: oliviaroundtown (dotcom)

A good quality Malaysian restaurant located in a convenient spot on the Khyber Pass road. I guess you can tell how good a restuarant by how busy it is and this place always seems to be buzzing. They open for lunch here and dinner right though until late. As regards Malaysian food, the only thing I was really familiar with was the Laksa but I ended up getting a beef curry with coconut rice. The curry was pretty hot but there was lovely balance of flavours - the rice complimented it perfectly. It was a big portion too and I got the impression that most of dishes here were like that. I tasted my friends noodle dish and it had a lovely subtle taste - hot and velvety. Don't know what herb was involved but it tasted great. If you were doing a bit of shopping in Newmarket or perhaps catching a movie in the Rialto cinema, this is a really good place to come eat.

I was recommended this place by friends and was rather satisfied after my first experience. Albeit I dined in, and they had previously got takeaway, but the food was still good and exactly what you'd expect (and want). The food was fresh - the broccoli particularly nice, bright green, moist and a little bit crunchy. I actually had difficulty choosing my dish, as I wanted a few items but ended up going with a favourite of mine, the sweet and sour pork. It was not the best I've had and would probably order something else if I return but was still decent enough. The sauce just seemed a bit too sweet, and chicken a little overcooked. Overall it is definitely a standout from the multiple other average food outlets located in the vicinity.

Parking is pretty good that part of Parnell and so once we walked all the way into the depths of the building on the ground floor all was well. We were seated quickly, and had our waitress come with water and to answer any additional questions promptly. She recommended a number of sharing plates, which was fine by us as we thought that would probably be a good way to go anyway. We started off with some of the lotus chips which were awesome. We then received a selection of dishes including lamb short ribs, crispy pork ribs (a winner), supposedly very spicy bang bang chicken in lettuce cups (it wasn't that spicy but had a bit of kick and was delicious too), Crispy squid tentacles were also a popular choice. The kung pao soft shell crab was tasty but a bit small serving wise, and the dumplings all tasty too. The pork belly was average, nothing wrong with it but not a standout. My wife especially liked the slow cooked beef shin. Service was excellent, food was tasty and interesting, restaurant a little dimly lit but very cool nevertheless (perhaps better for dates than family dining but I'm being picky here). My only quibble is value, it's not bad value for money but it wasn't great value either. If it were slightly cheaper I wouldn't hesitate to score it 5/5. However, that is not a deterrent to me wanting to try the restaurant again, as the Rest of the package was all of a very high standard. We will be back for sure.

First off, hats off to the owners for doing such an impeccable job on the decor and design. From the intricate restaurant design, the lush comfy chairs, the menu layout, the mocktails, and even the rustic bathrooms were all very impressive. Now let's get down to the food. We started off with the shumai dumplings with peanut sauce. The skin of the shumai was so soft and thin which I truly appreciate because you can taste the stuffing better. The peanut sauce was nutty and savory and extremely addicting! Next we had the salt and pepper tofu with a vinegar sauce. The flavors here were a bit flat and needed more of a peppery taste but the presentation of this dish made it worth it. The chicken satay was super tender and juicy. The creamy sauce with the savory clear vinegar sauce worked really well together. The ribs had a yummy flavor but the meat could have been a bit softer. I recommend doing a broil for the ribs at the end so the sauce gets a nice caramel. To top it off we ended the night with the mango pudding. It was a hard decision but we liked the refreshing flavors. There was a lot of stuff going on in this dessert, but was still impressed with the details in textures. We hope to be back here one day!

The delivery guy only delivered three of the nine dishes I ordered online, and I so I had to go and order the rest directly and collect myself. The Uber Delivery guy seemed to think nothing was wrong and I should call Uber if I have a complaint. Apparently Uber Eats gets orders botched now and then. Obviously I have issues with using Uber Eats again in the future. However, Asian Ruby's food, once unpacked and dished up to my family, was a true top class flavor experience. The pho soup was fresh and flavoursome, and other dishes we had were bursting with flavor as well. I really liked the Hanoi spring rolls, and the chicken and fennel salad. The prawn and pineapple fried rice was also popular. The portions were all very generous, noting the lemongrass chicken dish was a bit on the small side as a snack sized item. The pho soups are arguably enough for two people per order if you are thinking of ordering other dishes. It's all delicious, as you would expect of Vietnamese food, so be bold and have fun! The first time I dined at Lucky Buddha, I didn't quite know what to expect, but after learning that the owners are Korean, the head chef is Filipino and that they are serving Asian fusion cuisine (namely Japanese, Korean, Thai and Filipino), I was really excited. I have since dined at Lucky Buddha four times, and each time has been a very memorable foodie experience. The food is fresh and flavourful, and the cocktail list and service is excellent. Below, I list my favourite dishes and drinks at Lucky Buddha. For food, I recommend the following: * Sriracha Pork Steamed Buns filled with tender pulled pork, fresh herbs and a cracker spicy peanut sauce. This is my favourite entree on the menu as it has that melt in your mouth wow factor. The bao comes in a pair, so I recommend sharing it with another dining companion, so you can share a few other entrees! * Wakame Salad with Cured Salmon served with creamy avocado, crispy nori, foam and puffed rice. This dish incorporates two of my favourite foods - salmon and avocado, so I knew it would be a winner. The puffed rice and crispy nori gives the dish great texture. * Soba Noodle Salad with Avocado and Teriyaki Chicken - this is the perfect lunch dish! It is another great combination (soba noodles, avocado and teriyaki chicken), is extremely filing (carb + protein x2) and will keep you going for the rest of the afternoon. My favourite part of this dish is the fried crunchy soba noodles on top! * Bibimbap with Korean mixed rice, seasonal vegetables, soy beef and gochujang. Bibimbap is a classic Korean dish and also one of my favourite meals, so I was super excited to try Lucky Buddha's version. I tried this dish only a few weeks' ago, and it is now my new favourite! I loved the presentation, with the brightly coloured veg, flavoursome beef and semi-raw egg. The fun part of Bibimbap is that you get to mix all the ingredients together! Just one sad note - no kimchi. For drinks, I highly recommend trying one of their cocktails. Their cocktail list changes frequently, some of which are only on the menu according to the season. I have so far enjoyed the Dark Stormy Asian cocktail with Mount Gay XO rum, ginger, herb bitters and citrus (a highlight the first time I dined at Lucky Buddha) and the Heavens Surprise cocktail with Herradura Plata tequila, watermelon, mint and elderflower - I just HAD to order this cocktail as it incorporated my favourite food and my favourite spirit! It was refreshing and delicious. Lucky Buddha also has a small wine and sake list and a range of Asian beers on offer, including a beer of the same name. For a non-alcoholic option, try one of their iced teas or house made sodas. If the above is not enough to tempt you, then another reason why you should dine at Lucky Buddha is because of their excellent service. Each time I have visited, staff are friendly and efficient, water glasses are always topped up and you don't have to wait long for your food. Overall, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Lucky Buddha. Thinking about it now, it definitely makes my top five list in Auckland, for its Asian Fusion menu (featuring Japanese, Thai, Filipino and Korean classics), refreshing cocktails and consistently good service. I highly recommend dining at Lucky Buddha the next time you're out!
