    My SaiGon - FEAST :P

Yet another eatery has just opened up in the CBD, serving none other than delicious Vietnamese…read morefood! My SaiGon serves all the Vietnamese classics - beef pho, rice paper rolls, fried spring rolls, noodle dishes, vermicelli salads, grilled pork and of course, banh mi. After seeing a picture of their beef pho on Instagram, I just knew I had to try this place out! I went there last Friday for a takeaway dinner. The girl at the counter was friendly and helpful in terms of recommending her favourite dishes to me - there are many! I eventually decided on not one, but two dishes (I was pretty full afterwards) and ordered the Rice Paper Rolls with pork and prawn ($10 for three rolls and a peanut dipping sauce) and the Vietnamese Chicken Salad with peanuts, herbs etc. ($12). I must admit I did wait about 15 minutes for the food. Finally, the girl and the chef came out and apologised. They said they make their rice paper rolls fresh from scratch, hence the longer wait time. That was okay with me, because the food looked amazing! I couldn't wait to get home and try it! Both meals were incredibly tasty. The rolls were chunky, with lots of filling and they tasted very fresh. Instead of the usual Vietnamese dipping sauce, the rolls were accompanied by a peanut sauce, which was just as good! The Vietnamese salad was also very nice - it was quite spicy, which I wasn't expecting at all! However, I polished the whole thing and was already thinking about when my next visit to My SaiGon would be (food obsessed I know)! They also serve cans of soft drink, coconut water and Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. I am still yet to try this coffee - hopefully one day it will be soon... Just a side note... the shop is tucked away in a small food court just up the lane from New World Metro on Queen Street, so it is quite easy to miss, unless you walk up Swanson Street. However, I do highly recommend venturing out to find this place - it really is a hidden gem!

District 5 is the newest kid on the block and has opened in that strange space next to the Vero building. It was coffee shop for a while and then was unoccupied for ages, which was strange cos it's prize real estate. Anyway, they've done a great job of making the small street-side space somewhat private, with a large blue concrete wall blocking out passers-by. Inside the kitchen is in a box that resembles a building site container and there's a small courtyard with seating for those who want to eat in. Menu-wise, they've kept things simple - choose between rice paper rolls, pho or a rice noodle salad (each with different protein options). I ordered a rice noodle salad with their lemongrass chicken. The place was packed but my food was ready to go within 10 minutes. I'll admit, I had a few errands to run before I sat down and ate but the salad was still delicious. The dressing was fresh and zingy - just the right amount of chilli - and they didn't skimp on the chicken. I could've done with more fresh herbs and the carrot and lettuce was shredded rather recklessly. Still, for an on-the-go lunch options, AWESOME! Welcome to the block District 5!

For the dumplings we did have: the beef with mustard and duck with onions were tasty, but nothing unique. I couldn't taste the mustard; the flavor didnt pop or stand out. The service was also terribly slow at lunch, despite only two tables being filled. Not much to be desired. Easier to go down prince street and get cheap yummy dumplings.

After a long day of visiting several vineyards and sampling many wines, all I wanted to do was relax with a glass of wine and just a little bit of food. Xuxu hit the spot. I had pork dumplings, pickled cucumbers, and a glass of Syrah. The dumplings were delicious. The cucumbers were cool, flavourful, and just slight spicy. The glass of Syrah complimented the dishes perfectly. I was seated next to the stove where the chef was steaming the dumplings so I got to watch orders come in and the dishes go out. I also watched the bartender, server, and hostess work hard to complete the foods and drink orders. The atmosphere, beautiful lighting, and good music makes this restaurant a perfect place for a date. I'll be back next time I'm in town.

Indochine is a newly opened Vietnamese tapas bar located down Fort Street (big plus for the shared space) and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, the latter making it a perfect spot for lunch in the sun! The layout of the place is quite modern, with wooden tables, hanging lights and best of all, the most stunning mural on the wall - my friend and I couldn't stop staring at it! The menu itself is small, offering only six dishes of rice paper rolls, beef pho and bahn mi. They serve Vietnamese coffee, two types of sodas and alcoholic drinks too. From the menu, we ordered two lots of the Goi Cuon $12 (5 pork and prawn rice paper rolls with lettuce and herbs) accompained by a dipping sauce and a small chicken salad. The rolls were nice, but not the best I have had in Auckland. Also, I couldn't taste any pork and there wasn't enough dipping sauce! As for the service, well it was pretty good considering how busy they were! Our waitress was friendly and we didn't have to wait long for our food. Overall, a good first lunch, and great for those working in the CBD! Next time I will definitely be trying the bahn mi!

Indochine is casual eatery in the centre of town offering Vietnamese tapas. I have mixed reviews…read moredue to... The interior of the eatery has a cold vibe. I think its due to the tall tables and the seats are awkward to pull out. I feel like the interior and the waiting staff don't follow the same theme to the food. The uniform for the staff was odd - maybe it was because Indochine is in the city? but petit girls in backless halter tops with short shorts. You feel uncomfortable for them. I just think its maybe an outfit you would expect at a bar where you're trying to make tips if you get what I mean. The food was really great. If you want something light and healthy this is place you want to visit. Oh btw we came for dinner - their lunch menu is slightly different. The prawn rice paper rolls says you get 5, however don't be fooled - they aren't 5 normal full size rice paper rolls, although they pack a heap of flavour and were freshly made. We found the tofu rice paper rolls were disappointing because the tofu was hardly visible which meant you could hardly taste it was there. The charcoal beef steak wasn't what I expected - presented in a lettuce wrap but it was a good surprise. The mango brings a a vibrant flavour to the dish. If you want something with a bit of a punch order the squid. Probably a little spicier than it implies on the menu but if you like chilli like myself you won't be bothered. What I liked most is that the say what they actually are and thats tapas - Theres no trying to make portions or anything like some tapas restaurants. I would recommend ordering at least 4 dishes between the two of you if you want to be full. This is a place I would recommend to try, just dont take into account the odd waitresses attire.
